As you are probably well aware by now, we have undertaken a fundraising role for

the Ophthalmic cause – in particular the St. John Eye Hospital Group operating within

the Israeli territories. There is the cash for containers program, which will be on-

going throughout the year and which hopefully you will all continue to support.

Additionally we have held 2 “trash & treasure” type events, the most recent being at

Parap Ambulance Centre last Saturday, October 10. Thanks to the help and co-

operation of Service members and volunteers this event raised nearly $700, making

our total this year on sale events alone just under $1,000. That total does not include

the ‘Cash for containers’ revenue, nor other events e.g: Palmerston Cadets, who we

understand have held a quiz night fundraiser.

The Hospitaller, Dr. Nitin Verma has introduced the “Australian Friends of the St. John

Eye Hospital Group” – see Spotlite Issue 9 – September 2015. Membership of this

group is $50 per year and supports a nurse to staff the outreach team, and a senior

lecturer practitioner at the hospital.

Ophthalmic Week Our Open Day & Fundraising sale at Parap Ambulance centre was our wind-up

event for Ophthalmic week this year. 7am saw Craig Garraway mowing the lawns

and tidying up the garden areas for us to set up while Debbie got her PR stand

organized with Josh’s help. Our trusty Ambulance service personnel helped carry

out the goods from the shed to the set-up area which saved us a lot of heavy lifting,

and set up the shade structure and other St. John advertising banners. Myself,

Angie and her friend Christine were kept busy setting out the goods for sale as

people started to arrive before 8am. Luke got the BBQ going but we didn’t have many

customers for a sausage treat. Probably too hot because by 10.30 am we were all

feeling the heat and humidity. We were joined later in the morning by Britany,

Robert & Sandra from Darwin Division, also Kelly Raven and

Kimberlee McKay, and we were very thankful for their help.

We had a steady flow of customers until about 11.30, and

after that just a few. Then about 1.45pm came the

unenviable task of clearing up - thank you everyone! What

was unsalable will go to the tip shop and the rest is stored

for another time.

What success we had I feel was due to the advertising set

out by Debbie Garraway – the Ambulance Centre isn’t

exactly in the main ‘drag’, so many thanks for that Debbie.

sales but we were also aware that some stuff had been

taken without payment - very disappointing – but we

ended the day close to $700 for our efforts.

I think we would have been busier if the heat had not

been so uncomfortable for everyone, so my thought is

that we will have “Ophthalmic Week” in June/July next

year. This is the Northern Territory – we can do

October in July!

DR. FENTON'S PLANE

CARRYING OUT MEDICAL NEEDS

Mr. J. H. Brogan, Mayor of Darwin, sends along the

following information in connection with the working

of the plane presented to Dr. Fenton by the public.

I have been informed by the Chief Medical Officer for

the Northern Territory (Dr. C. E. Cook), that in the first

six weeks following the presentation of the aeroplane

purchased for Dr. Fenton by the public, he has used it

on official flights of a total distance of 4,203 miles.

Most of these flights were undertaken for the relief of

urgent cases and as the provision of a Government

machine has, of necessity, been delayed due to its

being built overseas, it is clear that the prompt and

ready response of the public to the fund saved the

Medical Service from an embarrassing inability to

provide these sufferers with proper medical attention.

Northern Standard, Friday 16 April 1937

SEVERITY OF SENTENCE APPEALED AGAINST

Doctor Fenton, a protector of Aborigines, appealed, in

the Supreme Court, before Judge Wells, this morning,

against the sentence imposed upon Charlie, Henry and

Nim, three aboriginals, who were each sentenced to

three months imprisonment by Mr. G. M. Knowles,

J.P., in the Katherine Police Court on March 15th, on a

charge of unlawfully drinking methylated spirits. Mr. A.

Brough Newell appeared for the appellant and Mr. E.

T. Asche, (Crown Law Officer) for the prosecution.

The ground for the appeal was that the sentences were

severe for first offenders.

In dismissing the appeal Judge Wells said he must be

satisfied that the Justice acted on a wrong principle in

imposing the sentences. There was no ground for that

shown on the depositions. The Justice imposed a

sentence within the maximum set out. Further the

prevalence of methylated spirits drinking at Katherine

was a deciding factor. The appellant had not shown any

grounds for varying the sentence and the appeal would

be dismissed.
