This academic year is one of transition for Bridgewater School, starting with theappointment of Mrs Judy Nairn as Head Teacher in February 2010. Judy has

worked at Bridgewater school for 26 years holding positions of Deputy Head and Head of the Preparatory Department.

September will mark the start of Bridgewater's 60th Anniversary year with celebrationsstarting at the school Prize-giving event to be held at The Bridgewater Hall.

A new EYFS unit will open in September 2010 providing a spacious, purpose createdarea for our nursery and reception classes. The school will also benefit from a newIndependent Learning Centre housing a bright and modern library and IT facility.

Focus on: Friends of Roe GreenFriends of Roe Green(FoRG) is a resident’s groupwhich works to promoteconservation of the environment and communityof Roe Green and ensureresidents have a voice in

the decisions about the Green’s future.

I recently met with six of the committeemembers - Pauline, Sylvia, Vivien, Jean,Annette and Joan - to find out more aboutthe group. They are a close group of friendswho have resided here a long time and trulycare about the area. I enjoyed the wealth ofknowledge they shared about the area, from local history to current issues, and discoveringthe great work they do to preserve the environment and promote community spirit.

MEMBERSHIP AND SUPPORTFoRG currently has 150 members. Membershipis not restricted to Roe Green and Worsleyresidents, but open to anyone who caresabout the area. Some are from Walkden,Swinton, and the furthest lives in Culcheth.Roe Green is visited by many, especially withthe children’s park and the Green itself. Thegroup is also supported well by the local shops.

An entirely voluntary organisation, they relymembership fees and grants to help achievetheir aims. The Committee meets once amonth to discuss ways to build on and maintain community spirit and raise funds toput back into the community.

EVENTS & SOCIAL ACTIVITIESFoRG also organise social events to make useof the Green and take advantage of the wonderful surroundings to bring the localcommunity together.

Throughout the year afternoon/evening talksare held at Roe Green Church Hall and RoeGreen Cricket Club. They have varied topicsand guest speakers, such as “Tea & Memories”where residents brought in photos andshared stories and memories, and FlowerArranging. Voluntary organisations such asRNLI and RSPB also give talks. All events arepopular and well attended.

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTSFoRG are behind many developments in thearea. Examples include:-l RHS Britain In Bloom “NeighbourhoodAward” given for the year-round planting inRoe Green. We now have 12 square planters,12 oblong planters, 15 hay baskets, and awild flower garden at the entrance to woods.l 5 blue plaques commemorating past residents and historic buildings in Roe Green.A current project is to improve the drainageof the Green and make it a more useable area.Committee members also lobby for improvements such as the clearance of deadtrees and recently, the cleaning up of graffiti.

Worsley Woods Trail Races 2010

This is the fourth hosting of this popular event, with localbusinesses and public sector organisations working in partnership.

The races attract elite and fun runners. Last year the 4.5 mile race was won by Andi Jones from Salford Harriers,a top Marathon runner, who competed for Great Britainin the European Championships in Barcelona, Aug 2010.The Fun Run saw a field from ages 2 to 88 all enjoying theleafy trails of Worsley Woods.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from local businesseswe have a great prize list, starting with £100 for the winners of the men’s and ladies races. All runners willreceive a memento at the finish. The first 100 children toenter the fun run will get a free race t‐shirt and all fun runentrants will receive a goody bag!

Worsley Property ViewOver the last two years UK house prices have plummeted,unexpectedly risen in 2009 and now appears to be slowingdown again. Is this the same for Worsley?

OUTLOOK FOR THE UK HOUSING MARKETOverall, UK house prices have risen in 2010against 2009, but this now seems to be stabilising. The year-on-year increase inhouse prices peaked at 6.9% in April, but fellto 4.9% in the three months to July. Theview from both the Halifax and Nationwideis that prices will flatten out by December2010 and broadly be unchanged over 2010as a whole. Some predict house prices tofall again in 2011... due to the simple factthat house prices are still too expensive.

WORSLEY STATISTICSObtaining reliable trends on Worsley aloneis difficult as it is such a small sample. Datataken from www.home.co.uk indicate inAugust, the asking price of houses in Worsleyhave dropped by around 20% from August2009. The exception being Detached houseswhich have increased by 5% with an average asking price of £559k.Properties which are currently up for sale,the average number of days on the marketis 180days. Semi’s being on for the shortesttime at 154 days to Flats and Terracedhouses being the longest at c.230days.

Terraced cottages on Greenleach Lane, onceselling for over £200k are now selling forbetween £165k (Mar10) and £183k (May10).

Popular detached houses on CrossfieldDrive seem to be holding their prices,

selling this year between£390 and £440k. Threesold between Februaryand May, which is themost activity here in oneyear for over a decade.

Looking at the actualnumber of house sales,activity has definitelypicked up in 2010.

FOR A LOCAL EXPERT OPINIONwe asked Fiona Beirne, MD of Urban Basesto comment on the Worsley market. UrbanBases has been established forover 10 years, and specialise inresidential sales and lettings.

“Things are better than they were. Well, when Isay ‘better’ I mean people are now more realisticand acceptable to the down turn in house prices.The Housing Market collapsed in November 07.Since then, prices have been steadily droppingby 9-20%, and even greater for new builds.That decrease in equity invariably leads to ashortfall on deposits for purchasers. No deposit,no move! The Banks now want a 20% deposit.On a property of £100k, a first time buyerwould need £20k in their back pocket (parents).Even the best of parents would find £20k astretch. Alas, It’s time to save, which is a strangetrait in today’s society but maybe not a bad one.

As we say to all our clients, “Houses are stillexchanging hands, what you lose on one yougain on the other, it’s academic, it’s a globaldownturn, wherever you live, prices have fallen.”

Houses are generally more realistically pricednow. Some, on the market for over 2 years, areover-priced. It takes longer to complete a sale- once it was 48hrs for an offer and 3 weeks tocomplete once accepted. Now it’s anywherebetween 3 weeks to 6 months with all thebank checks and tighter lending regulations.

Advice to anyone who wishes to move, butlack required deposits? – Consider renting. Wehave seen a dramatic increase in the rentalmarket over the last 2 years, a European trendwe believe is here to stay. The demographicsof people who rent have also changed. Moreand more families are choosing to rent theircurrent home, which in turn allows them thefreedom to move and rent a new home.

Any other advice for the house hunter? –Check the Energy Performance Certificate.Energy cost have risen by 33% in the last yearand predicted to rise again early next year.”

Licensed for Wine...and Spirits?Worsley Old Hall, is over four hundredyears old and is infamously haunted bynumerous ghosts....

Any place with a bit of history behind it issure to have a healthy population of ghosts,so our district is no exception. NearbyWardley, now part of Swinton, has WardleyHall, the official residence of the CatholicBishop of Salford. Known to the Locals as“Skull Hall”, Wardley is the home of afamous relic - the head of St. AmbroseBarlow, a local cleric who became a religiouscasualty of the Reformation, executed forpreaching the old faith. That is remarkableenough, but even more so is the fact thatthe skull has been known to take leave on anumber of occasions, disappear (go skull-about), only to return after a periodand take up its former position.

However, when it comes to value in spookterms, Worsley Old Hall, almost 500 yearsold and now a restaurant, really puts on ashow. Its best known resident was, ofcourse, the famous Duke of Bridgewater,who commissioned the building of the firstcanal in the land, but it is not he whom welook to for haunting. Rather it is his distantantecedents, Sir Richard Brereton and hiswife Lady Dorothy, who are the culprits.

In 1570, Sir Richard inherited Worsley and in1572 he married Dorothy Egerton who wasonly 12 years old at the time (in those daysof low life-expectancy it was customary tomarry young). When Dorothy was 16 yearsold she sadly lost their only child, a miscarriage apparently caused by her beingfrightened by a tame bear which had broken loose in the grounds of the Hall, butshe recovered.

In 1598, after 26 years of happy marriage,Sir Richard died and Dorothy inheritedWorsley and continued to live at herbeloved Hall. She arranged to have her husband and baby laid to rest at the Churchof Our Lady the Virgin in Eccles in a splendid tomb.

In 1604, Dorothy, still a relatively youngwoman of 44, married Sir Peter Legh ofLyme Hall in Cheshire and became step-mother to this widower's children. Theydivided their time between the two estatesand had a long and happy marriage until, in1636, Sir Peter died.

Now a respected dowager of 76 years, anextraordinary age for those times, Dorothyreturned to spend her last years at WorsleyHall. There were to be only another threeyears of life left to her before she died ofpneumonia as a result of an accident.

Wearing her favourite green dress, cut inthe voluminous style of the day, she wasdescending the main staircase of the Hallwhen she tripped and tumbled to the footof the stairs. Perhaps a fracture and shockdid the rest, for, taken to her bed, she diedwithin days.

In her Will Lady Dorothy stipulated that sheshould join her first husband, Sir Richardand their child, in the tomb at Eccles Churchand there they rest to this day. In Tudorruffs, Sir Richard in doublet and hose, LadyDorothy in a gown, their baby in a nurseryrobe, they dream on…

And there the tale should rest - but not so,for the hapless folk of Worsley.

Things emphatically started to go bump inthe night! Possibly the reason was that SirRichard and Dorothy were having a tiff inthe afterlife. He might have been peeved ather second marriage, she might have beennagging him to fix the heavenly gates.Whatever the reason, the villagers ofWorsley began to suffer the backlash of avery irritable spook. Sir Richard took tofrightening the nervous on dark nights,throwing weighty objects about, causinglivestock to abort and crops to fail, andgenerally disturbing the rural peace.

Something had to be done - an exorcism noless and seven priests were summoned forthe job. A lesser number had been tried butSir Richard was a ghost with stamina. Theceremony proceeded and battle with thespirit joined for many hours until, finally hewas brought to bay on Chat Moss. All thepriests' pleadings for the ghost to desistwere in vain, for it demanded a human

sacrifice as its price. After much negotiationit seemed that the ghost was bluffing, for itsettled for a chicken as the price of takingup a more friendly form in future - that of aswallow.

Meanwhile, back at the Hall, Lady Dorothybegan to put in an appearance. Wearing hersignature green dress, she started to wanderthe corridors and rooms, invariably endingher promenades at the head of the staircaseand then taking the tumble. But, always akindly lady, she never bothered anyone(beyond severe palpitations!) and she wasleft to her own devices. She is still aroundtoday, as successive cleaners of the Hallunder its different tenancies and even present day restaurant staff, will attest.

In 1975 a cleaner stated that she felt thather body was “possessed” and had anawareness that she was wearing a greengown. In this state and against her will, shefelt impelled to go to the head of the staircase and reached this point before shecould break the spell. The dress, however,continued to spectrally tumble down to thefoot of the stairs…

As for Sir Richard, the story goes that in achilly December, a local guide was relatingthe history of the Hall, of Sir Richard andthe swallow, to some foreign tourists. Hewas scoffing at the tale, when one of thecompany pointed to the sky and enquired:“What bird might that be”?In the sky a lone bird soaredabove the Hall in the wintryskies … it was a swallow.

The hour’s treatment involves shaping thenails and tidying the cuticles. Then a clear gelis applied to give natural strength and helprepair and protect them. The colour is thenapplied and finally S-gel was painted over thetop to build the upper arch and ensure asmooth and even finish.

Louise’s verdict: “My nails looked perfectlymanicured and felt strong. I loved the fact theywere my natural nails with no extensions. As mynails grow they can be infilled and the colourchanged. Panacotta with fresh cherry syrupServes 4

You will need for the panacotta450ml Double cream4 tbsp Caster sugar1 Vanilla pod3 Sheets gelatin

You will need for the cherry syrup250g Pitted fresh cherries250g Caster sugar250ml Cold water

To make the syrupPlace the water and sugar into a saucepan andbring to the boil. Reduce the liquid to a syrupconsistency (should take about 5 mins). Place the

pitted cherries into a large bowl and pour the hotsyrup over them. Set aside and leave to cool.

To make the panacottaCut your vanilla pod in half length ways and addto a saucepan with the cream and sugar. Stir overa gentle heat and before it boils, reduce the heatand then simmer for 2 mins. Remove from the heat.

Soak the gelatin in cold water until it becomessoft, then squeeze out any excess water and addto the hot cream liquid. Stir until dissolved. Pourthe mixture into 4 x 125ml moulds and refrigerateuntil set.

When ready to serve, dip the moulds into hotwater for a few seconds and then turn the mouldsover onto your serving plate. Coat each panacottawith the cherry syrup and then serve.

1. Unravel the liquorice wheels and cut into lengths to make danglylegs. Stick 8 into the top of each cake, making small cuts with the tip of a sharp knife so they push in really securely.
