FOR ALL THE LATEST INFORMATION VISIT TARMAC.COM/BARNSTONE-PLANT If you live near our site you may have spotted the arrival of a large crane-type machine. Plant Manager Chris Stephens explains what it is: “The 100-tonne concrete nibbling, steel cutting behemoth could reach the parts of the plant that other lesser behemoths simply couldn’t. It could easily have had a starring role in Jurassic Park! However, the concrete it is destroying is extremely hard so, big as it is, the machine is having its work cut out. Whilst the concrete is hard work, it snips through steel girders like a florist trimming daffodils! The dexterity of the operator has been great to watch. “The object of the exercise is to remove the old buildings and help us revamp our site, giving us a smart new look. Since we moved from being a cement manufacturing site to a specialist cement blending site in 2006, we have had no need for the chimney or the kiln buildings, so it was time for them to go.” This work will make our site more attractive for neighbours, visitors and employees, and enable us to reinforce our role as a specialist cement operation. NEW LOOK BOOST FOR OUR SITE

SUCCESS COMES FROM GREAT TEAMWORK

In this latest issue of Focus On Barnstone, we would like to introduce a few members of our team:

In 2013 Liam McHale, 21, started a four-year mechanical apprenticeship which combined study at Derby College with onsite practical experience here at Barnstone Plant. In 2017 - his fourth year - he worked on site full-time and gained a HNC in Mechanical Engineering.

Liam’s work has included electronics and pneumatics, large scale engineering, welding and detailed work on our cement packing machines.

“I have had a different job every day and loved the variety of work,” he says. “I have been learning all the time and enjoyed being given great opportunities to be involved in important projects for Barnstone Plant.”

Tarmac is committed to offering apprenticeships every year across its UK business. If you are interested in finding out more, please go to www.tarmaccareers.com.

Josie Morrissey started with Tarmac in 2003. Her role involves ensuring Barnstone Plant complies with the many standards and permits that govern its operation. She ensures that our Environmental Management System (EMS) is kept up to date, and assesses all environmental aspects to ensure controls are in place to minimise any adverse impacts on the environment.

“I am also responsible for ensuring Barnstone Plant has a good relationship with the community around the Plant,” says Josie.

“I especially enjoy attending local functions such as the village festivals, visiting schools and co-hosting the Macmillan Coffee mornings! The latest one was our biggest success yet – see back page for more information.

“As well as my ‘day job’, I have recently become a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Ambassador. This role enables me to give talks and meet young people with a view to promoting these subjects as good routes into successful careers, like the construction materials industry.”

Emily Parkes, 27, is so organised, she has now earned herself a dual role here! Bingham-based Emily works as the Stores Coordinator; but she also doubles up as a Technician in our Laboratory. Emily joined the company in 2015, having been drawn to the work through her father, John Parkes who has worked here for 38 years. She started on reception and then took over reorganising our stores area which can hold up to 1500 items. “It was quite a challenge,” says Emily. “With no engineering background I had no idea what certain parts were called or what they

were used for. But as I restructured the area, I learned quickly and now it’s rewarding to know that team members know where to find every item and that it will be in stock.”

Emily also works part time in our Lab, testing the composition and quality of our cements to ensure our customers have a consistent product. Emily’s hard work has now earned her additional responsibilities – looking after procurement of supplies; and also overseeing the establishment of a larger stores facility on site.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR SAFETY WORK

Barnstone Mechanical Fitter Will Lewis has received recognition for a safety initiative from the national trade body, the Mineral Products Association (MPA). Will is pictured here collecting his certificate at the MPA’s recent national Health and Safety Awards event. He was commended for his work on a project to improve safety for colleagues working with forklifts and the movement of pallets loaded with bags of cement.

BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE WORLD OF CEMENTDuring this year’s Langar and Barnstone Festival we took great pleasure in welcoming groups of local residents to take a look at our operation.

Visitors of all ages enjoyed a behind the scenes tour of our site, from the laboratory where our team keeps an eye on quality control, right through to our packing plant which manufactures up to 36,000 bags of cement every day.

All products produced at the Plant are sealed into plastic waterproof bags making them easy to store and robust to handle, minimising mess and wastage.

Most of the products are of the blended variety. This means the correct mix of ingredients are brought together, blended and then packed off into a range of packaging and sizes depending on customer demand.

Quality and consistency of product are vital; therefore, there is a high-tech laboratory on site where research, development and quality testing are carried out.

Selected Barnstone products are also packed in tubs. This range is particularly suited to small repair jobs where only small quantities of product are required.

COMMUNITY COMES FIRST FOR TARMAC

CREAM OF THE CROP FOR CHARITY

What do cement, apples and the annual Macmillan Coffee Morning all have in common? The answer is – Tarmac Barnstone!

Encouraging and protecting biodiversity features highly on Tarmac’s priority list at all its sites around the UK. At Barnstone, the overhaul of a redundant and scruffy part of the site presented us with an opportunity to go one step further and create an orchard.

That was a few years ago now, and the apple trees are now bearing fruit – lots of it! Our staff are now picking several varieties including Bramley and Cox’s Orange Pippin. Some of this fruit was used to bake cakes for the annual Macmillan Coffee Morning which Tarmac supports every year. The event was held in Barnstone Village Hall and was well attended by villagers and Tarmac employees. It was great to see so many villagers there, enjoying the coffee and cake and raising funds for such a fantastic charity at the same time.

Justina Harper, one of the event organisers said: “The support for this event was amazing. A massive thank you to all the lovely star bakers, helpers and cake eaters! It was fantastic to see the local community coming together for such a worthwhile cause.”

BOTTESFORD CHILDREN GO GREEN FINGERED!

Joining forces with an enthusiastic group of parents and local suppliers, we helped put the finishing touches to a play garden for young children at Bottesford Pre-School. We donated specialist products for securing posts and a tepee structure, as well as for floor slab laying in the garden.

The Pre-School staff and parents joined together to transform an overgrown outside area into a space where the children can play and enjoy being outdoors as much as possible. The garden will provide a safe and fun space for the children to enjoy and includes a woodland story area and a willow tunnel.

Manufacturing Coordinator Tim Hotchin, who delivered the Tarmac products to site, said: “This has been a great project to get involved with. Developing this garden for the children to enjoy more time outside has been a real example of community spirit and generosity. It’s been a bit like a mini DIY SOS!”

Pre-School Chair, Donya Donger said: “The support from Tarmac and other local businesses has been overwhelming and we couldn’t have achieved so much without all the help we have received from the parents and the community.”

BACK TO SCHOOL THROUGH POSITIVE PARTNERSHIPS

Our links with primary schools like Robert Miles and Langar Church of England go back a long way. Over recent months we have been developing relationships with secondary educational establishments to promote career opportunities within the construction sector, and to offer practical experience for students in Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects. We are having ongoing talks with Toot Hill School in Bingham and other secondary schools and colleges in the area.

If you know of a school which would be interested in finding out more about our industry, please contact [email protected].
