The avai lab i l i ty o f on-s i te me tho ds o f d iagnos is o f the de te r iora t ion ra te in re in forced
concrete structures is a pressing technical need all over the worht. Two new methods are
proposed in th is paper which are der ived f ro m the polar iza t ion res is tance me thod but which
di f fe r ing f ro m th is me thod are applicable to fu l l - s i ze s t ruc tures in sp i te o f the non-uni form
dis tr ibu t ion o f the e lec tr ic s ignals in them. The two proposed procedures are o f a s imp l ic i ty
and re l iab i l ity comparable w i th those o f fe red by d irec t measurem ent o f po lar iza t ion
resistance.
1. I N T R O D U C T I O N
T h e e n o r m o u s n u m b e r o f r e i n fo r c e d c o n cr e te s t r u ct u r es
i n a d e f i c i e n t s t a t e o f p r e s e r v a t i o n i s c r e a t i n g s e r i o u s
p r o b l e m s o f in s p e c t io n , d i a g n o s is a n d m a i n t e n a n c e i n t h e
m o s t v a r i e d c l i m a t e s . G e n e r a l l y , t h e u s e f u l l i f e o f s u c h
s t r u c t u r e s i s l i m i t e d b y c o r r o s i o n o f t h e r e i n f o r c e m e n t .
F o r s o m e y e a r s t h e r e h a s b e e n g r e a t i n t e r e s t i n t e c h n i c a l
an d s c i en t if i c c i rc l e s , l i nked to the bu i ld ing s ec tor , i n the
d e v e l o p m e n t o f m e t h o d s o f d e t e c t i o n a n d d i a g n o s is
w h i c h w i l l a l l o w t h e c o n d i t i o n o f s t r u c t u r e s a n d t h e
d e t e r i o r a t i o n r a t e t o b e k n o w n .
