For the first time since 2013, the field at the BMW Championship will include five-time champion and 79-time PGA TOUR winner Tiger Woods, who is scheduled to compete at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square. Woods will be joined by World No. 1 and two-time BMW Championship winner Dustin Johnson and 2018 U.S. Open and PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka in headlining a star-studded field Sept. 4-9 at the penultimate event of the PGA TOUR FedExCup Playoffs.

“The FedExCup Playoffs always produce a world-class field for the BMW Championship, but Tiger’s return to form makes this an especially exciting year for our event,” said Vince Pellegrino, senior vice president of tournaments for the Western Golf Association, which conducts the championship. “We’re thrilled that Philadelphia-area golf fans will have the opportunity to see Tiger compete alongside Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and the game’s other superstars next month at Aronimink.”

The Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board (VFTCB) is proud to partner with the BMW Championship, especially since the headquarter hotel for the event is the Philadelphia Marriott West in Conshohocken.

“We’re so excited to welcome guests of the BMW Championship to our more than 70 hotels during the event,” said Mike Bowman, President & CEO of the VFTCB.

To prepare for the BMW Championship, Aronimink – often cited for its difficulty and beauty – has restored the course to Donald Ross’ original 1928 American parkland design. The restoration included increasing the number of bunkers from 75 to 176 and restoring greens and fairways throughout the property.

“The entire membership of Aronimink is pleased to host yet another world-class golf event at our club,” said Joe Fabrizio, Aronimink Golf Club president. “I am confident that fans will long remember witnessing first-hand the restoration of our golf course, the first-class amenities and what promises to be an incredible week of golf.”

Other past BMW Championship winners vying to again claim the event’s historic J.K. Wadley Trophy include Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Zach Johnson. Reigning FedExCup champion Justin Thomas and major championship winners Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed and Francesco Molinari also are slated to compete in September at Aronimink.

Proceeds from the 2018 BMW Championship will be used to fund Platt Evans Scholarships for caddies attending Penn State University and to establish a scholarship house at Penn State-University Park, where scholarship recipients will live together. Since 2007, the BMW Championship has raised more than $27 million to fund college scholarships for caddies of modest means.

This year, three high school seniors from Montgomery County – Parker Bria of Roslyn, John McCormick of Horsham and William Morris of Flourtown – have been named Platt Evans Scholars. Each will attend Penn State this fall.

The inaugural Valley Forge Invitational brought women’s professional golf to Montgomery County in May!Held on the challenging Ed Shearon-designed Raven’s Claw Golf Club in Pottstown, the event was one of more than 20 on the Symetra Tour schedule for 2018. Louise Ridderstrom from Sweden shot a course record to win the tournament, which was the first time the Symetra Tour played in the Philadelphia region.

The Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board and its Valley Forge Sports sales team helped bring the tournament to the area.

“The Valley Forge Invitational was a tremendous success, but wouldn’t have been possible without the strong support and guidance from the Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board (VFTCB),” said Mike Nichols, Chief Business Office for the LPGA Symetra Tour.

“Their involvement and leadership efforts helped to create a solid sponsorship foundation, as well as media presence, in all of the neighboring communities. We are looking forward to many years of partnership as we prepare the next generation of LPGA stars for success.”

The Meet the Pro’s party was also held in Pottstown at the Sunnybrook Ballroom. The Pro-Am featured former Eagle, Vince Papale, and other local businesses entertaining top customers and prospects alongside the future LPGA Tour stars.

Now in its 37th year, the Symetra Tour attracts thousands of spectators, and results in millions in positive economic impact. The top-10 players on the season-ending Race for the Card money list will be awarded LPGA membership for 2019.

Since it opened in 2005, Raven’s Claw Golf Club has been a consistent selection on the list of “Pennsylvania’s Top 10 Daily Fee” courses, as selected by Golfweek. In fact, Pennsylvania is one of the top 10 states by number of golfers, and the Philadelphia region is in the nation’s top five, according to the 2017 National Golf Foundation’s Golf Participation in the U.S. Study. The major sponsors for the Valley Forge Invitational included the VFTCB and the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation (PAHWF). Local charities, as designated by the PAHWF, that serve the people of Pottstown and residents in seven public school districts within a 10-mile radius of the borough, are the beneficiaries of the funds raised during the tournament.

The VFTCB is in its third year of building its Destination Montco Golf brand as a celebration of the more than 50 golf courses throughout the county – that’s 300,000 yards of play – and the LPGA Symetra Tour was a result of the sales team attending trade shows.

In the early 1900s, Philadelphia was the capital of golf course architecture in the United States. Legendary course architects including George Crump, Donald Ross, George Thomas and A.W. Tillinghast were creating golf masterpieces in the region.

Fast forward more than a century and golf course architect Ed Shearon is using the inspiration from architect greats to build masterpieces including one specifically in Montgomery County.

Open since 2005, Raven’s Claw Golf Club in Limerick Township, a Top 10 course in Pennsylvania by Golfweek magazine, is one of 20-plus public golf courses across Montgomery County. Welcoming 26,000 golfers annually, the course features a variety of hole styles, many of which have been carved from rolling hills and mature wooded areas that require creative shot-making against stunning views.

In May, the course hosted the inaugural Valley Forge Invitational, an LPGA Symetra Tour. “My inspiration was to have the same esthetics, shot values, level of maintenance, use of nature to create hazards, and strategic approaches to the course just like the other greats created, but mine is

for the average person to play,” said Raven’s Claw Course Architect Ed Shearon of Shearon Golf. “My design is made to challenge the championship player with tough angles and hazards, but also give the higher handicap player the ability to navigate the course. But to make par, the championship-style player will need to know the strategic way to attack this course.”

With bent grass tees, greens and fairways, this championship course was built with a strategic design in which every shot on the course is associated with a hazard. Players able to navigate the obstacle will get a major reward with a shorter distance to the pin, a better view, or a better shot angle. However, those who overestimate and challenge the hazard unsuccessfully will find themselves most likely in a position behind the course’s conservative players.

“The three holes players must navigate successfully are 9, 10 and 11… that’s our little Amen Corner,” said Shearon, referencing Augusta National’s Amen Corner. This three-hole stretch is one of the most hallowed places in all of golf where pros fear it, fans adore it, and it never fails to deliver drama.

Golfers from across the world travel to Raven’s Claw to experience what Shearon references as a “symphony-like essence” the course offers with excitement and tempo. Players gently increase the intensity of their game as they approach the middle of the front nine with a crescendo, with holes 8 and 17 as critical swing holes.

As players approach the back nine, holes 9, 10, and 11 are dangerous to navigate, with holes 9 and 18 being physiologically and physically demanding, according to Shearon. Just a symphony, after golfers get halfway through the back nine, intensity decreases at the 17th and 18th holes, with players finishing a challenging, yet thrilling, day of golf.

Golfers and families looking to travel to Raven’s Claw in Limerick Township will find numerous hotels and restaurants within a five-mile radius of the course. Exciting nearby attractions include the Carousel at Pottstown, Steel River Playhouse, Manatawny Still Works and most notably from the Raven’s Claw course, the Philadelphia Premium Outlets which includes a collection of 150 outlet stores. Families and individuals looking to make it a weekend can also head 18 miles southeast to enjoy an outing at Valley Forge National Historical Park, the site of the 1777-78 winter encampment of the Continental Army, with guided tours, bike rides and much more.
