Coach Jan Hutchinson has seen a lotof softball in her 26 years as head coach. She knows that playing with intensity canseparate the good teams from the greatteams. As Hutchinson prepares for the2004 season she sees an intensity in theHuskies that is getting her excited forthe start of the season.

“I am really looking forward to thisseason,” said Hutchinson. “The team hasbeen practicing with a lot of emotion andintensity. They are fired up during all thedrills and can’t wait for the season to start.Last year was disappointing since we didnot make the NCAA final eight. I knowthis year’s team is using that as one of itsgoals for the year. They want to go out ontop as seniors.”

“Our team leadership is very goodthis year with seniors Amber Cowher andJess Shnyder stepping into the role ofleaders,” Hutchinson added. “They haveboth been All-Americans in their careersand have worked hard in the off-season toget even better. They are certainlyleading by example.”

“We return all but two starters in thefield and have all of our pitchersreturning,” said Hutchinson. “If we cankeep everyone healthy we should haveanother outstanding season.”

INFIELDThe Huskies infield is both strong

and deep this year. Returning playersDee Wolfe and Sara Roba will be vying forthe starting first base job. Wolfe came onoffensively for the Huskies at the end oflast year and will be a key figure in themiddle of the lineup this year. Roba is abat you want in the lineup and is also soliddefensively. A freshman, KristenKoveleski, is a solid player with great workethic and will see time at both first andthe outfield.

At second base sophomore KellyZarski will get the nod with freshman JessSnader adding quickness and depth to thesecond base and shortstop positions.Zarksi had a good offensive season as afreshman and should continue to getbetter. Snader has great range and astrong arm.

Amanda Breon, a first team All-PSACselection last year, will start again atshortstop for the Huskies. Breon is a quietleader who can hit for power and average. She is an outstanding player at shortstopwith great range, a strong arm and solidfundamentals.

At the hot corner, look for LaurelKoster to once again earn the starting job.Koster is very quick defensively and will bebacked up by sophomore Cyrstal Condran.

OUTFIELDIn leftfield the Huskies will start

Samantha Basalik who has gotten bettereach of her three years with the Huskies.Basalik has good range and is expected tohave a breakout year with the bat.

In centerfield, All-American JessShnyder is back for her fourth year afterleading the team in most offensivecategories a year ago. Shnyder has greatrange in the outfield and will once againbe a key offensive performer.

Right field will be a toss up in theearly going for the Huskies. Because theteam is so deep and talented in theinfield, look for several infielders to getsome playing time in right. Among thosebattling for the spot will be Roba, Zarski,Snader, Kovaleski and Tina Jennosa.

PITCHINGThe Huskies staff can best be

described in one word—talented. Led bysenior Amber Cowher, the Huskies cansend anyone of four pitchers to toe therubber this year with confidence. This falleach of the Huskies’ pitchers either addeda pitch or improved the pitches they werealready throwing. The power for each ofthe pitchers also increased.

Cowher, who has been an All-American during her career, threw 37consecutive shutout innings last year forthe Huskies while striking out a career-high 193 batters. Cowher not onlyimproved as a pitcher, but also as a hitter.Look for her to be a key performeroffensively as well for the Huskies.

Jaime Wilson, Amanda Smith, a pair ofjunior, and a red-shirt sophomore JenProbst, have also made big strides the past

CATCHINGSenior Becca Kehler and Alyson

Taylor will see time behind the plate thisseason. Kehler is a slugger who once hitfour home runs in her first four at-bats ofthe year, while Taylor had a great fallseason and is ready to be a keycontributor. Taylor also has goodmechanics and a strong arm. FreshmanTina Jennosa is a solid catcher with astrong bat who will add depth bothbehind the plate and in right field.

OVERALL“I have a lot of optimism as we start

the year,” said Hutchinson. “We areexperienced, deep in pitching and have agood work ethic. This team can go far if itso desires.”

As far as the PSAC goes, Hutchinsonis predicting a dogfight among severalteams.

“Shippensburg will once again bevery good, while Mansfield and EastStroudsburg are much improved and arelooking to qualify for the PSAC playoffs,”Hutchinson added. “West Chester hasadded a new coach who should field astrong team, while Kutztown is always ateam to watch.”

The Pennsylvania State AthleticConference, with 52 years of organizedcompetition, has established itself as oneof the most respected NCAA Division IIathletic conferences.

In its history the PSAC has laid claimto 33 NCAA team champions and 186individual title winners, giving credenceto its fine athletic tradition. Theconference’s prosperity on the nationallevel was abundant again in 2002-03, asnearly one-third of the league’s 245teams participated in NCAA postseasoncompetition. The PSAC also distinguishesitself as the second largest Division IIconference in terms of sportssponsorship, awarding titles for 22different sports.

Academic success is paramount forPSAC member institutions as well. Duringthe 2002-03 academic year, 1,200student-athletes were designated by theconference as “Scholar-Athletes” afterattaining a cumulative grade pointaverage of 3.25 or better. Additionally, eight PSAC student-athletes earnedVerizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America

Awards last season. The PSAC was organized in 1951 for

the purpose of promoting andadministering men’s athletic programswithin the 14 state teachers colleges inthe Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In1977, due to the interest and growth ofwomen’s athletics, the conference wasrestructured to provide for women’sprograms.

From its inception, each conferencemember selected its own competitivedivision within the NCAA. In 1980,however, the presidents voted to reclassifythe entire conference to Division II.Although all 14 institutions are membersof NCAA Division II, nine schools havealso elected to compete at the Division Ilevel in select sports.

In 1983, all member institutions weregranted university status as a result ofLegislative Act 188, which formedPennsylvania’s State System of HigherEducation. This system now enrolls inexcess of 101,000 students. The alumni ofthe State System number more than586,000, including 375,000Pennsylvanians.

Take one glance at the history of theNCAA Division II Softball Championshipsand the name Bloomsburg is prominentthroughout the pages.

The only institution to participate inevery NCAA Division II Tournament since1983, the Huskies have the most wins of anyDivision II school with 59.

Bloomsburg missed only the 1982 tour-nament, a season in which the Huskies wonthe AIAW Division III national champion-ship. That season, teams had a choice inwhich tournament to participate.

Twice the national runner-up, Blooms-burg has won more Mid-Atlantic/East Re-gion titles than any other school in theregion. In fact, its nine titles dwarf the nextclosest schools, California (PA) and SacredHeart, which have three and two regionalcrowns, respectively.

The Huskies have been in the champi-onship round eight of the last 14 seasons, a feat matched by no other Division II program. In that time, the team placed second twice, third four other times and fourth twice.

The Huskies played the longest game in NCAA Division II Tournament history in 1984,when Bloomsburg battled Sacred Heart for 23 innings. Sacred Heart captured a 1-0 decisionin the game, and, after the Huskies won the following game 3-0, Sacred Heart won another1-0 contest, this one in eight innings, to advance to the championship round.
