    Activities of E&I

The E & I Department is concerned with the Electrical works in the entire plant, which include:

Providing Construction power to the entire plant using the CESU supply and various Diesel

Distributing the power to various places within the township and plant.

Electrical repair works throughout the township and the plant.

Co-ordinating the electrical and instrumentation-related works of various departments and

taking proper actions based on their requirements

Automation of the entire plant using various Instrumentation Systems

In short, E&I is the hidden pioneer of all the works in the entire plant.

However, the most important activity of the Dept is the 400/220/33KV MSDS

which is to be commissioned early, next year.

    My Role:

One of the members of the switchyard

To study the drawings and try to understand and help in implementing them at the

    site

To be pre-equipped with sufficient knowledge to identify the difficulties involved in

the project work and rectify them

To supervise the electrical works like provision of construction power supply, DGmaintenance, illumination, etc.

To plan the schedule of the work and to organise to get those works within the

    schedule

To coordinate with the other members of the team and arrange for an effective

    plan of action

To help maintain the favourable work environment

To grab every opportunity to learn things from the experienced ones

    Key Observations:

    6

Its easier said than done. What Ive learnt till date was one part; its implementation, the other.

An engineer is a Manager in the true sense. One needs to have good management

skills to get the work done in time.

Every work needs time and the time required is subject to variations depending upon

the situation. One needs to follow up at every point of the work to ensure proper work.

250KVA, 6.6/0.433KV Distribution Substation set up in the switchyard to provide

    construction power for the project

Earth Resistance Testing throughout the township and the plant

Understanding of layouts, Drawings, SLDs, Technical Specifications, etc. related to

    the switchyard.

Material Reservations, Purchase Requisition, Service Reservation, Work Order, etc.

through SAP. Preparation of Comparatives for cables and LT Distribution Panels

Study of manuals, catalogues and specifications of various electrical equipmentsused in the township and the plant

Tried to utilise the training programmes conducted by the management (the one

like DG Maintenance, SAP, etc. to the fullest to acquire some basic knowledge

required to work efficiently and effectively.

Tried to study the entire power distribution system in the plant and township areaand to draw an SLD of the same, which was later on taken as a reference to make a

fair copy in Autocad by one of my batchmates.

    Suggestions and Recommendations:

    10

Simplification of the process of work order required to ensure efficient and timely

    delivery of results.

We GETs should be given access to all the drawings, various TS documents and BOQs

of various activities being undertaken in the department. This would enable smoother

work flow and coordination among all the members of the team.

There should be a common Medium of Instruction and Information Exchange

(preferably, Hindi or English) so that all the technical parameters should be properly

understood. In other words, it should be ensured that technical discussions or

meetings should never go on in regional languages.
