Once again, we have been audited by the State of Indiana for contractcompliance. The hard work our employees have put in since the lastaudit was very apparent. It is clearthat we have done our very best to meet the guidelines set forth by allState and Federal Agencies for whom we do work.

That being said, now is not the time to rest on our laurels. It isimportant that all parties involved continue to strive to meet minorityand female hiring goals on each job as they progress, and it is important that we continue to meet our DBE/WBEgoals on each new project we bid. Our subcontractors and the unions must also realize their important role inhelping Halverson meet its goals. Subcontractors must continue to request women and minorities when they arehiring, and the unions must help us meet our goals by finding and training the right people.

I urge you to remember our EEO obligations and continue to make good faith efforts to meet hiring goals for females, minorities and trainees. With your help, we can continue to have a safe and prosperous construction season.

After more than 30 years with Halverson, the most important lesson thatWendy Schluter has learned is that knowledge is power. It’s a familiarexpression, but not everyone actually embraces it as a business philosophy, often to their detriment.

“Knowledge and being prepared - knowing the who, what, when andwhere of any problem along with being prepared is the key for anythingwe attempt to solve,” Wendy said. “Not knowing all the facts and nothaving a plan is a sure method to failure.”

As Halverson’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), she has a greatresponsibility to carefully look after the company’s financial well-being.It’s definitely not an easy job during a time when state leaders can’t passa permanent budget and the economy suffers accordingly. Throw in theever-increasing regulations that govern the construction industry and it isa recipe for uncertainty.

“All three of these items negatively impact our work force, finances, insurances and investments,” she said. “It is a daily challenge to make surewe have in place the tools, knowledge and ability to protect the assets ofthe company. Not only the property assets, but the people assets whodepend on us every year.”

Wendy’s financial acumen is well suited to construction. She is a fourthgeneration member of the industry and her son, Kristopher, is now the fifth to don a hardhat. She took over asHalverson’s payroll clerk in 1985, having previously held the same position with a Peoria-based constructioncompany. Wendy was later promoted to office manager with Halverson and then rose to the CFO position. Asher career has progressed, she has seen the company evolve.

“We started out working for IDOT (Illinois Department of Transportation). When the state was in financialdifficulties, we added a commercial division,” she said. “When the lagging economy in Illinois led to a decreasein commercial work, we went to work for INDOT (Indiana Department of Transportation) and started working onthe high speed rail work. As the market changes we evolve to meet those challenges and find new direction tocontinue to prosper. It has been interesting to be a part of that evolution.”

Wendy is a graduate of Sangamon State University, now the University of Illinois-Springfield, where she earneda bachelor’s degree in accounting. Outside of work, she is an avid reader who likes to volunteer at the library. She also enjoys traveling and just spent two weeks vacationing on a Rhine river cruise visiting Hungary, Austriaand Germany. Her favorite pastime is visiting her children and grandchildren. Wendy and her husband, Kent, take every opportunity they can to see their loved ones.
