Last week, I spoke about the article, Dream Again, but unfortunately the page was dropped for Adverts. Sorry about that. But we have it this week.

In this write-up, the writer advises us to think out of the box, to not let circumstances distract us from achieving our goals. She goes on to say even though these are some of the most trying and most confusing times, there are people who despite the tough times, choose to rise above the confusion and who believe there are still opportunities to create good in the world. They are crazy enough to dream big, to defy

what’s around them and where they currently are. They are restless because they know there’s more to them, the seed of greatness will not

allow them succumb or default. This, to me, is the right approach to life, another visual example of this

principle is Dress Alike. Here you see two women of different shape and size, wear similar outfits. What is the comparison to the Dream Again article you might ask? The simple

fact is that, even though one woman is bigger in size, she has not let that fact deter her from embracing her curves. If anything, she’s wearing a similar outfit, but one that is designed to suit her frame just like her slimmer counterpart has done. And in truth, she looks just as good, regardless of size. This attitude applies to every other aspects of life. If a situation or circumstance does not favour you, you find a way to make it favour you. As they say, when the going gets tough, he tough get going. Be innovative. Be daring and most of all, be confident no matter what your circumstances are. Remaining stagnant with a defeatist attitude is not healthy. Believe in yourself and the world will believe in you. I do hope you will give it some thought.

President Muhammadu Buhari hosted a dinner for the visiting President of Republic of Germany, Mr Joachim Gauck, his wife Danelia Schadt and other delegations at the state capital. The event took place at the Presidential villa where all the political big wigs in their colourful national regalia were on ground to ensure Nigeria was well represented. There were also cultural dancers from Benin, Akwa Ibom and Benue much to the delight of the German visitors who were visually pleased with the colourful dance groups. President Muhammadu Buhari also made a welcome spech to the visiting delegation. It was an evening of hobnobbing and light entertainment as dignitries from both countries wined and dined together.

TRIUM TAKES LAGOS! In recent times, a funny picture circulated social media illustrating that a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken is worth more a barrel of oil. It is close to the truth. Many would argue that we have sprung a leak, not only in reserves obviously but in policy. However, it can still be argued that the country remains rich in potential, opportunities and possibilities. It was this thought in mind that recently informed the decision of the graduating class of one of the world’s most accomplished executive business

education program, Trium to tour the country, learning more about investment opportunities and openings for mutually beneficial economic partnerships and collaborations. The Trium Global Executive MBA program is an alliance between the New York University (NYU) Stern School of Business, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and HEC School of Management, Paris. The student body and the tour was led by Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, President, National Council of the Exchange Rate and member of the class. It is made up of global executives and business leaders from over 30 nationalities

who occupy high ranks in the global corporate industry.

THE GLOBAL EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAM TAPS THE PULSE OF AFRICA’S BIGGEST CITY...

CORONATION CAPITAL The location of Aig-Imoukhuede’s venture and the venue to a truly

unforgettable, world class party that didn’t end until 4AM!

NIKE ART GALLERY Guests were greeted here with traditional dances, and the local adire attire and they even got to make some

themselves. For a few hours, the students who hail from Sweden, Russia, India, South Africa, USA, UK, got to be Nigerians!

LAGOS MOTOR BOAT CLUB Country club memberships and exclusive associations are

not of course alien to these global executives and they got a good take of how cosmopolitan, elite Lagos does pastime: fancy boats, a great view, cold beer for the lads and a lavish buffet.

LAGOS POLO CLUB WITH ALIKO DANGOTE The students arrived in Polo Tournament season and needed

little invitation to take to the polo field. They interacted with the polo players in the heat of the game and later met with the richest man on the Arican continent, Aliko Dangote.

NIGERIAN STOCK ExCHANGE CLOSING BELL WITH OSCAR ONYEMA The class was welcomed by the CEO of NSE, Oscar Onyema who gave a detailed account of

how the Exchange worked and its role in the African economy at large. The class had the privilege to ring the closing bell for the day after which Aig-Imuokhuede gave a riveting interview to CNBC affirming though things do look bleak at the moment, there is a chance for economic restoration and revival especially with the right foreign investments and partnerships. His interview received approval and applause from his classmates.

LUNCH AT SKYWith a delicious view of the Lagos coastline beckoning, guests had

lunch in the city’s finest (yes, double superlative!) fine dining restaurants, Sky Lounge. And of course, what is a great view without pictures to tell that you saw it and some selfies in between?

EKO ATLANTIC WITH RONALD CHAGOURY JNR. & GABRIELE VOLPI

Trium students were given a blow-by-blow account of how Eko Atlantic came together, plans in the nearest future by Ronald Chagoury Jnr. the Vice Chairman of South Energyx Nigeria Limited, the developers and city planners of Eko Atlantic. Also present was one of the biggest investors in Eko Atlantic, Italian-Nigerian billionaire, Gabriele Volpi. The students were also opportune to see up close the first residential tower billed to open this year.

By AyODEJI ROTINWA

ACCESS BANK HEADqUARTERS WITH HERBERT WIGWE The students then visited Aig-Imoukhuede past place of employment – Access Bank an institution whose fortunes he led and

contributed significantly to changing for the better, and made him into the global executive he now is. Students were received personally and warmly by the current M.D., Herbert Wigwe who took them on a tour of the bank’s headquarters and also provided entertainment.

ALARA LAGOS WITH HRH SANUSI LAMIDO SANUSI

The night ended on a colourful note at one of the country’s brightest, modern cultural jewels – ALARA, a retail, design, artistic, lifestyle destination like no other. Students were also joined by the Emir of Kano, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and acclaimed visionary economist, His Royal Highness, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who gave a talk.

talkingabout From fashion, style, celebrities, social-

ites and pop culture, here are some of the hottest stories this week…

LOVE LIKE A MOVIE 3R & B superstar Dare Art Alade’s highly anticipated

‘LOVE LIKE A MOVIE 3 ‘ the third edition, comes up today the 28th at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre, Lagos. The show will feature star performances from some of Nigeria’s finest artistes like Yemi Alade, Olamide, Omawunmi, Blackky and more with a star performance from international songbird Ciara. The show which has recorded two highly successful editions in 2013 and 2014 with global superstars Kim Kardashian and Kelly Rowland, is set to break further grounds today with new concepts and ideas to give a spectacular show. The long wait is over the day has come! “Love Like a Movie 3’ will be everything you dreamed of and more.

MEET SAINT WESTKim Kardashian recently released the first picture

of her son Saint West, to mark her late father Robert Kardashian’s birthday. Kim and her husband Kanye West welcomed their son back on December 5, but had not released any images of the infant’s face until now.

Kim previously teased fans by sharing a photo of Saint’s hand clutching the finger of his big sister North and captioned it, “He’s my best friend.”

VOguE.COM NAMES WIzKID AS BEST DRESSED pOpSTAR

When you get featured in fashion’s ultimate bible, you know you are clearly on the right path fashion wise. Vogue’s writer, Alex Frank, has recently profiled Nigerian pop-singer, Wizkid as the best-dressed musician in Nigeria. The star talks about everything from his style to where he shops to some favourite designers. He describes his style in Lagos as ‘’fresh and different’’. going on to say that, ‘’Even with the tailors, they get very innovative with their stuff, with the cuts. When my parents used to make the traditional wears, it was a little bit baggy. But now the tailors are able to infuse the European style, making it slim-fit. Lagos style is different, man.’’

BETWEEN LINDA IKEjI & WIzKIDThis year, the social media circle has proved to be a

‘’no chill space’’ for every and anyone who badly needs to get in the news. If it isn’t Annie Idibia calling out her husbands ex lover, it just might be our politicians throwing cryptic jabs at each other. For the rest of us, it is more and more entertainment all the way. This week it is the turn of Wizkid, who went all-out to war on Linda Ikeji via his Snapchat by sharing an old unflattering photo of the blogger with caption, “Almost 40, lonely and bitter! prayers up for you.”

His action seems to be connected to a post on Linda’s blog, which indirectly refers to him as ‘’A deadbeat father who hasn’t started to cater for his child’’. We have our eyes on this and we would be sure to let you know how it goes on from here.

HIgH FASHION MODEL, AjAK DENg quITS MODELLINg

One of Australia’s most successful international runway models, Ajak Deng, recently announced that she has quit modeling because of “Fakes and lies’”in the fashion industry.

In an Instagram post, Deng said that she was happy to announce that she was “Officially done with the fashion industry.” The Melbourne model also said she was “Thankful and grateful for every sweet souls that I have crossed paths with.” The 26-year-old also announced that she would be moving back to Australia to live a ‘“Real life’.”

“I will be moving back to Australia In order to live the life that I fully deserve. Which is real life,” The model wrote. “I can no longer deal with the fakes and the lies. My life is too short for this dramatic life.”

An hour later Deng posted a photo on Instagram of herself smiling and looking up to the sky with the caption “Thank you for your blessings god.”

The model has previously been outspoken about racism she had encountered both in Australia and overseas. In 2014 the model tweeted about racism in the international fashion industry, claiming that she was “Kicked out of Balmain for being black.’ The tweets, and Deng’s account, were later deleted.

Deng has modelled for a number of high profile designers including Dior, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Marc jacobs, Chloe and jean paul gaultier, and starred in campaigns for Topshop, Barneys, MAC and Levis.

I got a dress online and on receiving it, I realised that

it was way shorter than it looked on the internet.

I love this dress and still would love to rock it

regardless but I am scared that I will attract the wrong

signals. When is short too short? What hemline is age

appropriate?

The AMVCA is just around the corner and I need a stand out outfit

that screams DIVA!!! What’s your take on

showing some skin on the red carpet?

Please, I need to know today’s business casual. I would love to

look trendier when going to work but I feel some of these clothing

look like they don’t belong in the office environment. What is

the stylish, classy professional wearing to the office these days?

I love the fashionable necklaces these days,

including statement necklaces, but I

always struggle with earrings to wear with

them. Don’t want anything too matchy-

matchy or loud, but then what’s best—

posts, hoops, dangly earrings? Or must we

skip earrings in this case?

Microminis are fine for those in their 20s and maybe once in a while for the early 30s who have awesome legs. Midthigh lengths work perfectly for the 30s. But once you hit 40, aim for just above the knee. I haven’t seen your dress so I really can’t tell but if you look in the mirror and still get worried about attracting the wrong signals, then it is probably too short.

I have always been on the conservative side when it comes to showing skin. I’m from that school of fashion where you show one part of your body, not all of it. At the end of the day, it’s best to dress in what you’re comfortable in. I will recommend a lace dress in a very bright colour. That way, you not only tick two trend boxes, but you also show off your skin in a very subtle and sexy manner.

Look for materials that are comfortable but have an inherently dressier feel (jersey, chiffon, cashmere). Try pairing, say, a flowy jersey top with culottes pants (if your work environment permits) for an outfit that tows the line between office-appropriate and easy going polish. Chic accessories will make a big difference too.

What it comes down to is this: do your ears feel naked without earrings? If the answer is no, skip them knowing that your necklace will make a big enough statement. But if you feel unfinished without earrings, simple studs are almost always the best choice. Look for a pair that coordinates in some way with your necklace, whether that means matching stones, colours, or metals (or all of the above). And be sure that you stick with the same style: But do not wear pyramid studs a bold or ladylike necklace with. Save them for something edgier.

How can a beautiful, proportional, and

very curvy plus size like myself wear leggings and/or

skinny jeans without my legs looking like a

Christmas ham?

When picking leggings or skinnies, stick to dark tones: black, inky indigo, charcoal, even dark burgundies or teals. (Brighter colours will emphasize thighs; darker colours will slim). For a flattering alternative to skinny jeans, look for slim or straight-leg cuts. Neither of these offers a skintight and leg-hugging fit. Instead, the silhouette is more columnar, falling in a straight line from thigh to ankle.

It was a Sunday like any other, the young couple with two toddlers heading off to buy groceries to break their fast, a young teenager negotiating the fare with a commercial biker, better known as Okada. Other Okadas sat idly by

waiting for passengers. People stood at the crowded bus stop waiting for the next bus heading their way. A car was stationary on the motorway waiting to make a left turn with other vehicles slowing down behind it. Nothing about this scene was out of the ordinary nor was I prepared for what happened next.

Sudden do a truck bearing down the motorway and unable to stop in time, tapped the young couple from behind. The momentum turned them into the left lane, ramming me violently. That then turned them back to the right lane where they hit a minivan and before anyone could say another word, the vehicle turned once more to the right and careened into the bus stop knocking over several bystanders and Okadas. All we could say was Jesus and nothing more as the car came to a screeching halt, the teenager lay under the car, a motorbike crushed under the front wheel and commotion erupted everywhere.

God is often called merciful and on this day, He was full of it. As the dust settled, the teenager miraculously emerged from under the car with nothing more than a flesh wound on his head while others had bruises and cuts. As I thought through the occurrences of the day, I couldn’t but wonder what role I played in it all. Leaving home that morning, for the first time in years, I rushed off without a prayer. I forsook my daily morning devotion on the excuse I was going to church after all and didn’t want to be late for worker’s meeting leaving myself vulnerable to forces beyond my control. The little things we take for granted very often leaves us without the divine cover we need to see each day safely to the end.

How often do you leave home without a prayer?

May God’s mercy cover us all the days of our life.

KEHINDE OKUNORENGive us some background on the Okunoren label, what kind of man are you designing for?

A confident man who understands what style is.

When did you know that designing was something you wanted to do full time?

Taiwo started the label which was called Taiwo Okunoren in Sept 2001, Okunoren Twins didn’t come into existence until May 2002 because I was interested in the idea and I thought he needed help in some areas and that was when I knew it was serious for me.

How long have you been designing and what were the challenges you and your twin faced while building your label/brand?

It has been 14 years now and challenges are still there, but we have been able to manage them to a certain level.

The first challenge we faced was convincing people and making them believe in the idea of made in Nigeria suits. We were being laughed at in the beginning and people said we had nothing serious to do, remember we were 19. Today the men’s suit industry is a livelihood for thousands because of what we did and it is worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

With the grace of God, it took immense work and perseverance to still be involved in this industry because 80% of the challenges we have today is human capital on all levels. From production to customer service to delivery, it has been intense, but we have been able to somehow manage this issue and we are still working round the clock to solve the issue permanently.

Did you at anytime doubt the strength of your brand?

Never! As pioneers of this industry and the level of creativity and innovation that’s in the house, we have never for once doubted the strength of the Okunoren brand. Yes Nigerian men still wear suits from Savile Row, Caraceni, Armani and all those huge international brands, but they have to stop, especially those who are the influencers. Mr. Elumelu coined the terminology “Africanism.” He is one of the most stylish and detailed man in his generation, so we need people like him to wear nothing but a Made in Nigeria suit to enhance the perception of the industry because the strength of a brand is driven by who associates with the brand. We need Nigerian influencers on all level to embrace Nigerian brands and put their money back into the country and not to foreign and already successful brands. It’s time for us to look inward and not outward because no country thrives on 80% import. If anyone believes that the Nigerian quality is not good enough then they should invest in a product so they can use it and it can also compete with international brands.

What is it like working with your twin and what qualities do you admire in him as a business partner?

It has been good working with him, but not easy. Every partnership needs mutual respect and patience. We have been able to build this brand together over the year, which takes a lot of understanding. We know our strengths and weaknesses while constantly being honest and open with each other.

How do you handle differences in decision making in terms of designs and general day-to-day running of your label?

That’s a tricky question, LOL. We argued a lot in the past, but over the years, we have realized it is best to have documented roles and responsibilities. This way, we tend not to crossover into each other’s territory unless necessary and we try to do that amicably.

Taiwo works more on the creative side of things in

TAIWO OKUNORENTell us your story, where did it all start for you, how did you get into fashion designing?

Initially we were selling ready-to-wear clothes by foreign designers. At some point, we noticed clients were always requesting for amendments for a more tapered look. That sparked our venture into made-to- measure clothes.

At what point did you know that this is what you wanted to do full time?

When I realised I was being creative effortlessly and clients were happy with the result.

Was it a dream you and your twin always shared or how did you both come into partnership?

The fact that we are twins and we grew up doing everything together, it was only natural we go into business together.

How long have you been in partnership and what are your individual roles in the business?

We have been in partnership since inception. I handle the creative aspect of the business and Kehinde over sees day to day running.

What was your first major break in the fashion industry, do you remember how it happened and how long did it took for you to break in?

The break in itself was when we introduced bespoke tailoring to the average Nigerian man and when it became accepted.

Being a Nigerian/Yoruba Designer, designing and making bespoke suits, do you pull any inspiration from your tradition and how is this apparent in your suits?

Absolutely! Our design ethos is predominately based on the Yoruba heritage as well as the African culture. Our apparent use of African aesthetics in our work attests to this.

What is the most important thing for any one to put into consideration while buying a suit or getting a suit made?

The cloth should always come first so try to avoid whatever has a synthetic blend. Look for 100% worsted wool and for Nigeria I would recommend a “super 150s-180s” for a combination of luxury, durability and our weather. One must realise that a suit is not only about the look, but the feel and durability. We use cloth from Dormuiel and Holland & Sherry.

The second one would be know the cut of where you plan to buy or make it from and have realistic expectations.

These are the two most important factors.

Apart from suits and all the things that come with wearing one, what else do you design?

We design every piece of a man’s wardrobe, excluding undergarments at this point.

Who is the typical Okunoren client? An independent thinking male, who has the liberty

to express himself regardless of the norm.

terms of design while I handle the operational side of the business.

In recent times, it seems the label has been a bit quiet on the fashion scene, is this intentional?

The last 14 years has been a learning process for us. This business for us is more than the glamour and glitz that comes with it, our last ten years as businessmen has been nothing but a drilling process for us both as men and also as a brand. We have realized how tough it is to do business in Nigeria and the only way to grow to become an institution is through hard work and to give full concentration to what you do. We have been watching what is happening on the whole scene so we can know what next move to make and what way to go.

What should we expect of the brand this fashion year in terms of putting the brand on the forefront of men’s fashion?

Okunoren has always been and by the grace of God, will always be on the forefront of menswear in Nigeria, but not we as individuals. We are very conservative people so we don’t have to be on the red carpet at every event to make sales or to run a profitable business. Okunoren is a very strong brand, which we only intend to intensify.

With so many bespoke suit designers coming

up in recent times, what makes an Okunoren suit different from others?

We are completely focused on our own standard, which we continuously work on improving.

Being such a huge name in the Nigerian fashion scene, what do you make of Nigerian fashion on the global stage?

It is very impressive and there’s a lot if interest from all over the world and the interesting thing is, there’s only so much the westerners can do or design again as all that’s being done there is recycling of designs and trends. The real and new talents are from Africa especially Nigeria so we as a country and business people need to take advantage of what we have.

They are very excited and perplexed about the colours and the vibrancy of our fabrics and craft, but they will only try to make it second best. They will always try to idolize their own brands and that’s what we Nigerians need to do. The biggest spenders in Selfridges and Debenhams are Arabs and Nigerians and I do not understand why the money should be taken out so I am not too keen about Nigerians on a global stage because what we need to do is to make sure that Lagos becomes a fashion capital through regular fashions shows and maintaining the highest quality of our work. They will look for us and not us going to them.

What are your plans for expansion? As we speak, we are working on the

second store and on a women’s line. We still produce some of our products abroad, which is extremely unfortunate, but as I said earlier because of our issues with human capital, we are left with no choice if we want to remain in business. So part of our expansion plan is to produce 100% locally by opening a factory where the tailors will produce every single thing we design and we plan to train and mentor the tailors and apprentices by a foreign technical partner so they too can realize that there’s a lot of money to be made because the unemployment rate in the country today is alarming and we as a business, have a role to play to reduce this.

Describe your style? My style is subtle and laid back.

Who is your style icon and why?My late dad and the Olubuse II. He influenced my

general perception as an individual, and style wasn’t left out. He was an Engineer and he wore a lot of suits to work and when he was abroad, he was someone that was loyal to certain brands like his shoes where from Bally or Barker and his cologne was only KOUROS by Yves saint Laurent which I still use date. I remember he always bought my brothers and I shoes from Bally and Ravel and we hated them because we were between the ages of 9-13, but it made us very proper in our dressing. So all these influenced my minimalist way of dressing up. Also, Okunade Sijuwade was by far the most stylish man in his generation. He conveys royalty so effortlessly it makes you want to be a King and in 2014, he awarded us the first royal warrant in Africa which we will forever cherish.

Any last words to our readers who aspire to go into fashion design?

Fear God, be hardworking, have all the passion in the world, be original, never copy or imitate competition and stay focused at all times.

Specifically for the men or the boys: Don’t ever get carried away by women, red carpets and popularity.

We have realized how tough it is to do business in Nigeria and the only way to grow to become

an institution is through hard work and to give full

concentration to what you do.

I am inspired by the vast and intrinsically rich African culture, I find that I subconsciously tap into

this for inspiration and ideas, which I thereafter run by Kehinde

and the team, we then build a complete picture.

16

what particular show will you say has been your best or most successful and what feed back did you get from it?

As I am inspired by the vast and intrinsically rich African culture, I find that I subconsciously tap into this for inspiration and ideas, which I thereafter run by Kehinde and the team, we then build a complete picture. Thankfully our shows are always well received, enjoyed and it inspires others. Now, a fashion week in Nigeria is not complete without drama or spectacle.

The best we will say is the ARISE fashion show 2011 when we had two monks, an Oba’s staff of office and sat on the chairs on the runway, we had a lot of fun doing that and the feedbacks were fulfilling.

Do you and your brother have any plans

designing for women? That’s fully in the pipeline.

Any other plans for the label that you will like to share?

Creativity is spontaneous. We let it lead. Tomorrow we could be designing a museum, who knows.

What three pieces should every man have in his wardrobe and why?

A white shirt.Okunoren blue suit.A pair of Oxfords.Why? Creating a timeless look

Describe your personal style?Minimalist.

Who is your fashion icon and why?His Royal Majesty Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse

II. His obvious personal expression of style regardless of the norm.

Who is the one person you will love to make a bespoke Okunoren suit for?

President Hage Geingob.

Any last words for budding Designers?Build the courage and audacity to believe in your

own ideas.

HATS OFFYou can’t think classic wedding without associating it hats and fascinators. Pair with a nice dress with that speaks volumes and you’re ready for the wedding – or the races, up to you.

THISDAY Style Vol. 21, No. 7613 Sunday, February 28, 2016

Looks For AWEDDING

Invited to a wedding and not sure what to wear? We’ve got you covered. The most important thing to remember is to look cool and stylish, but NOT distract from the bride or draw attention for the wrong reasons. That’s why we recommend you use the wording on the invitation or the time of year to determine your wedding attire.

HOLLYWOOD GLAMSequins aren’t just for Christmas you know! If there’s one occasion you can pull out all the stops, it’s a wedding – even better if it’s an evening affair. We recommend you park your hair up in a bun to keep all attention on your dress.

PEPLUMPeplum dresses are great

for all body shapes as they clinch in the right places and

add the illusion of curves where needed.

RULES TO FOLLOWThe ground rules for dressing for a wedding…Rule number one: Don’t ever, ever wear white to a wedding. You should also avoid wearing white to pre-wedding festivities, like the engagement party, shower or rehearsal dinner. The only exception to this rule is if there’s an all-white dress code for one of the celebra-tions.

Rule number two: Always be respectful to religious affiliations. If you know the wedding is going to be held in a Catholic church, it might not be a bad idea to cover bare arms with a shawl and avoid showing too much leg or cleavage.

Rule number three: You can wear black to a wed-ding—it’s not off-limits. It used to be taboo to wear black to weddings, but now a little black dress is totally appropriate for an evening affair.

Rule number four: It’s better to be overdressed than underdressed. If an invite says “black tie optional,” err on the side of caution and wear a long dress or dark suit or tux. Like your mom always said, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

A HEADTIE AFFAIR

If you fancy going a little bit OTT, think traditional head-tie. You can’t have a classic Nigerian wedding without

associating it headties. Whatever your choice of outfit, a nicely tied headtie can give you that stand out look you

need at a wedding.

LADY IN REDWhile a full on red dress might be a tad much for a wedding – after all, it IS about the bride, isn’t it? – but the odd touch of red is completely acceptable.

Woven loafers are design excellence. Whoever invented them needs to take several bows and perhaps deserves the Noble Prize for Footwear Ingenuity, whenever someone in Sweden has the good sense to set it up. I mean Physics, Eco-nomics, Peace, why not footwear you know?

Given, there are a couple of ugly designs but there are the quality cre-ations, likely Italian who lend such a kicker to any outfit, you may consider not wearing any clothes at all and just rock out with them solo. Of course, I exaggerate. Indecent public displays are still a crime in these parts, I think.

It’s instructive to know as well this pair of bad boys lends itself to all man-ners of attire as long as it is not a deathly serious black tie dress code.

But where to find them? Shopping in Lagos can be quite the hassle and finding the right pair might take longer than it took the most powerful country in the world to find one furry, long-bearded terrorist.

The Romance ediTRESTAURANT RADAR

This week, I sampled three restaurants – the things we do for you readers! – and have prepared this preview for what to expect if you will be eating out with your significant other. If you haven’t made any reservations or even if you have, here’s a guide to help your culinary choices for a happy stomach and for love! Bon Appetite et Bonne Lecture!

The Grillroom, WheaTbaker hoTel

When it comes to fine dining in Lagos, The Grillroom at the Wheatbaker hotel is arguably one of the most accomplished spaces in the business. its tucked away location in the heart of South-West ikoyi on a street shaded by tall trees, largely resi-dential to the unspeakably wealthy, gold plated fencing and large columns reminiscent of The White house, affords it an exclusive air. Further into the hotel and restaurant, walls are usually beauti-fied by art meticulously curated and sourced by collector and connoisseur, Sandra obiago. The restaurant itself is bordered by a softly singing, cascading waterfall, just outside its glass doors to the right. The room, for dinner is dimly lit and the mood is just right.

LoveRS’ choice? Yes. The ambience of the Grillroom can makes

for a very romantic, private evening. The lighting in the room is well executed such that it could be that your significant other is all you see throughout your

ScarleTT lodGe reSTauranT

This is another hotel restaurant, albeit a boutique one. Scarlett Lodge is barely six months into the hos-pitality and lifestyle industry but in my book, it’s made quite a mark. The first thing that grabs your attention is the name and just as you’re still considering this, you get to the entrance and there’s a man in a scarlet-coloured waistcoat with a smile welcoming you in. it could come across as cheesy and overkill but it does not. it’s elegantly done. The layout of the hotel is impressive with a narrow hallway leading to the restaurant.

The restaurant itself probably has the best ambience in Lagos, period and this is what i like most about it. it is tastefully outfitted from the choice of lights, to the table design, off white furniture, the bar which looks like a glit-tery island of liquor and bottles in a sea of brown space, polished wood floors, a vintage library bookshelf. its wait-ers are also very well dressed, an attention to detail most restaurateurs miss. God forbid the ‘help’ looks good..

LoveRS choice?

i would say yes. For now but maybe not much longer after this article is read, Scarlett is still a bit of a hidden gem. The two times i’ve been there, i’ve never found it to be packed with people. it’s quite warming to feel like you almost have a place to yourself and that’s really romantic in my book. The hotel does tout itself to be

I’m beginning to think the restaurant business in Lagos is one of the great cake walks in the global hospitality indus-try. Is there anywhere in the world restaurateurs are having it this easy? Yes, here, there are skilled staff challenges, there are the government taxes and there’s even the little problem of electricity. But the most important part of the profit equation for the restaurant is pretty locked in, no matter the circumstances – the customer. What I mean is,

even when poorly treated by staff (bad service), being heavily, unduly taxed on food, being made to tolerate poor ambi-ence, Nigerian restaurant-goers may only complain but somehow they always go back to these restaurants. We are very comfortable with rewarding bad behaviour. I mean, look at the set of politicians we elect every election cycle. The same

mind-set applies to restaurants. It is this review column’s ambitious mission to change just that.

izanaGi For the best cuisine from the Far east, this is the go-

to place with its rich Japanese delicacies. The restaurant itself gives off the vibe of a basement club for food for those in the know, even though you have to go up a flight of stairs to get there. it’s a fairly small space and quite intimate.

LoveRS’ choice if you really feel like Japanese food yes. it is intimate

yet not so intimate at the same time; i can’t really envis-age sparks flying in the restaurant’s dining area. The only sparks flying are from the chef on the hot plate making your dinner.

mY menu veRdicTWhere to begin? of the three on this list, izanagi

serves the best tasting food and it’s little wonder it’s number 1 on Trip advisor’s list of restaurants in Lagos. its menu is spectacular; there simply isn’t one dish that’s better than the other. izanagi maintains a really high cuisine standard from presentation, to price, to the actual taste. it’s the most value for your buck you would

evening, of course if you are paying attention. The ambience lends itself to intimate one-on-ones, shar-ing food across tables and if you get a corner table, some naughty games under it. hey, we won’t judge!

mY menu veRdicT

When i was there, i was fortunately by my lonesome and had a three course meal all to myself produced by the able hands of chef oberholzer. i had and i hereby recommend:

- The Beetroot Salad, to start,

- The Beef Fillet for the main course and

- a glorious, absolutely unforgettable White chocolate cheese cake for dessert.

i WaS noT So hoT aBouT…

- The décor & design.For a luxury hotel and

restaurant, The Grillroom is fairly plain but i suppose that is the intention...understated. When one dines at such an otherwise impressive hotel which boasts a fine dining restaurant, you ex-

pect the full experience – décor, layout design, ambience, as well as service and food. The Grillroom is pleasing to the eye but they could raise the notch a bit.

4 Onitolo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

- The Sizzling Brownie, for desserts.

The restaurant also has a memorable cocktail menu with the drinks bearing hilarious names although i’m not sure if that was the point. There was a cocktail named Bo-lanle which i found so ridiculous, i laughed for a good few minutes. it just didn’t fit to my eyes.

WaSn’T impReSSed BY…

- Timekeeping Both times i’ve been there the food and drinks

arrived later than promised although they were deli-cious enough to make me momentarily forget but it is something i find unforgivable with restaurants. a stated time is a promise. if a waiter tells me a dish will take 40 minutes at 8pm, i do not expect my meal to arrive at 8.41pm. it is just bad form.

79 Younis Bashorun off Ajose Adeogun, Victoria Island Lagos

only for discerning guests with the pay off line, ‘secretly amazing’ indeed it is!

mY menu veRdicTanother thing i really liked about Scarlet Lodge was

the food presentation. once the food is laid on the table, i dare you not to whip out your phone and capture the moment before you dig in. i would recommend though,

- The Basmati Rice & Balsamic Beef Sauce or the King prawns dish, for the main course

get eating out i reckon. From the ultra-fresh sushis to the prawn Tepantaki, egg Fried Rice, coconut prawns, Salmon Salad, it’s food for the soul!

19B idejo Street, victoria island

i did noT caRe FoR…

The forced intimacy. Yes the seating is cosy but too much so. i would say as the seats are too close together for comfort, i was almost certain the person on the next table could breathe into my food. i do not think that the square metre space of the restaurant is appropriate for a restaurant. But nigeria being what it is, and no checks on food, health and building stan-dards in restaurants… This

is of course not to suggest that eating in such close proximity could trigger anything other than personal space discomfort but better safe than sorry, no?

That these are some of the most trying and most confusing times all over the world, is no longer news. What may be news is that there are people who despite the tough times, choose to rise above the confusion and who believe

there are still opportunities to create good in the world, to build systems that will benefit not destroy, to tap into new possibilities for creating wealth that will impact not just them but their communities and the world.

Bill and melinda Gates have not given up on their quest to eradicate malaria.

a quote that keeps me grounded from the greatest book ever written, comes to mind in these times and i paraphrase for context: “ThoSe that know their God,

Fashion DiariesFew years ago, I met this amazing ‘Banker’ on the plane to England. She was pleasant, very warm and helpful, we

spoke about everything that day. Few months down, I start seeing pictures of her all over the internet, and was everyone talking about her, wait a minute, isn’t this Toyosi the Banker? Well, not anymore. Alas she had become

what she should have been. Apparently, she left the bank, moved to New York City and obtained a diploma in Broadcast Journalism from the New York Film Academy. Shortly after graduation, ‘The Gist with Toyosi Phillips’ was launched. It ran for two seasons with a total of 34 episodes. She’s currently at the New York Film Academy, this time studying towards a diploma in Producing- encompassing Movie Production, Music Video Production, Reality TV Show Production and Advertisements Production. She’s a member of the New York Women in Film and TV Association and the National Association of Black Journalists; Toyosi is one strong, determined young

woman. I just had to catch up with her on her fashion and style.

Who is Toyosi Phillips? Toyosi Phillips is a presenter, budding TV & Film producer, writer, all round media personality and Sickle Cell Advocate. My passions… I love Jesus, I love life, I also love traveling, keeping up with entertainment news, reading best sellers and African Fiction… I love many things.

What does style mean to you? Style is showing on the outside what’s really on the inside. It’s a combination of your entire look and your persona.

Favorite colour? Orange

Beauty secret? I drink lots of water and I always wear a smile.

Best Perfume? Hermés Elixir des Merveilles! I feel like I can walk into the White House or Palais de l’Élysée or even 10 Downing Street without being turned back once I wear this perfume. It smells so rich!

What items do you have most? This is really weird but I have loads of branded t-shirts from the weirdest

of places! Countries, gyms, store give-aways… I’m slowly

becoming a t-shirt junkie.

Cannot go a day without? Gist!

In a relationship? Yep! Lots of relationships.

You cannot be caught wearing? Wedges!

Most expensive items in your wardrobe? My Bags!

Best designer? Tory Burch- The woman herself and what she stands for. Her Foundation for women entrepreneurs is changing lives! There’s an Education program, a Fellows program and a Capital program and all these programs are doing amazing things for women! Seriously look up Tory Burch Foundation.

Style icon? Jennifer Lopez. I’d love to be her best friend or aburo.

Fears? “Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others.”- Robert Louis Stevenson (author of treasure Island). People tend to- sometimes unconsciously- look at others differently when they know

their fears.

What don’t people know about you? I’m part-recluse.

Do you see yourself as fashionable or stylish? I’d like to think a little of both. I follow trends sometimes and I do me sometimes.

What’s your favourite saying? Things always fall into place.

Worst fashion moment? So, years and years ago, my mom was working in West Asia and said she would send clothes, shoes and stuff to me in Nigeria. One lovely Saturday afternoon, my dad dressed me up in this beautiful 2-piece set for my friend’s birthday party. We got to the venue and were told we had the dates mixed up and the party was the following Saturday. We ran into an aunt as we got back home and the look of shock and amusement on her face when we told her I was coming from a birthday party was unforgettable! What my dad thought was a fancy 2-piece set was actually a pyjama set!

Lilian Unachukwu- Lillian never fails to make

a statement on the red carpet. Not surprising though considering

the fact that she is a fashion consul-tant/stylist. This is a pretty simple

one, as you can’t go wrong with the colour combination of red and black. Lillian stuck to the basics. Not quite sure about the chunky bracelet on

both wrists though as it looks a bit distracting.

But aside from that, a lovely combo

from head to toe!

Taje Prest – Taje is a perfect pin-up example

for plus size fabulousity. I like that she takes her size into consideration

and covers up nicely while still being fashionable and appealing. I also admire her attempt to take a bit of fashion risk via

her blonde coloured hair and lemon coloured nails.

Nothing screams sexy like a plus size woman who
