Dealers From Around the Country to AttendMichigan Antique Festival in Davisburg

Thank you!” According to TedMuellen of Shawnee RoadAntiques of Baroda, MI, that’s

one of the most common first reactionsfrom new customers to his store. Hedoesn’t even have to ask for what any-more, it’s for having actual antiques.Ted says that other dealers tell him allthe time that nobody wants realantiques anymore, but he has to dis-agree. “I’m finding a lot of people fasci-nated with finding an old fashionantique shop.”

Having opened in 1969, Muellendefinitely remembers what antiqueshops used to look like.

One trend that he finds really promis-ing is younger customers. While the shopis definitely off the beaten path, in the lastdecade or two, ten wineries and micro-breweries have opened within a five mileradius of them, which has brought a lotmore traffic off the highway and out intothe country. Consequently they’ve beenseeing more people in their 20s and 30swho have never seen an antique shop likethis and they really seem to enjoy it.Many of them are also surprised howaffordable antiques can be, since while helikes to have more advanced unusualitems, he also stocks pieces for the begin-ning collector.

Shawnee Road Antiques consists ofthree large buildings. The main buildingis filled with more formal antiques andsome of the better country smalls. Thesecond building is a wonderful old two

story barn, the only original structure stillstanding from when it was a workingfarm. This building is full of countryantiques. The third building is an assort-ment, one end is furniture which may ormay not need some work, while the cen-ter section is dedicated to things thatwere made for or could be used outsideor in the garden. The other end is proba-bly one of the more unusual features. This is where you’ll find “Apparel fromthe Past.” Apparel from the Past isMarsha Ruby’s business devoted towomen’s clothing mostly from 1900 tothe 1960s. Inside a Victorian storefrontbuilding you will find literally over athousand one-of-a-kind pieces of apparel.

In addition to the three big build-ings is a small shed lined with shelvesthat is the half price area, and a 1960semi-trailer painted with the originalmoving company’s logo on the side.People always say it reminds them of anold circus wagon. The trailer is filledwith parts and pieces for do-it-your-selfers. By the way, if you spend the daygoing through all the buildings youmay have to check out what’s behindthe barn. It’s the cutest Victorian out-house you’ve ever seen! If the frontporch and decorative shingles over thedoor don’t convince you, look insideand check out the marble top table andcrystal chandelier!
