Living on the Rock Listening to and Learning from the Words of Jesus in 2014
This book is intended to be a helpful reference and reminder throughout 2014. The apostle Paul was able to preach “the full counsel of God” because he had a plan for doing so. The saints in the first century were able to “grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ” because the Scriptures were explained systematically. Think of this book as a laser sight, helping us to hone in on our target. The word of God is rife with powerful lessons, practical purposes, and spiritual instructions, which we can have access to, if we will diligently and deliberately seek them out.
Planned Preaching The teaching and preaching for each month of 2014 is outlined in the following pages. This gives
us an opportunity to read passages and meditate on the word of God beforehand. The word of God is powerful, and this gives us a greater opportunity to experience and benefit from the power of God’s word. By focusing on the text of the Scriptures, we can listen to the voice of God, and be taught by our heavenly Father.
Personal and Family Worship Along with each month of preaching and teaching, there are quarterly personal and family worship guides. These are not intended to take the place of spiritual leadership in the family, but to offer a springboard to begin studies and worship at home.
Serving One Another It is our great privilege and honor to be part of the greatest work mankind has ever been given by God: preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. The gospel should change us so that we live to serve other people, both physically and spiritually. There are helpful reminders to encourage us to live for God.
Doctrines of God Throughout the year, we will focus on different doctrines of God. These teachings about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are the foundation of our faith. By learning more about God, we learn how to beRer glorify our Redeemer.

Fighting for Faith1 Peter 5.6-‐‑11
5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-‐‑minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a liRle while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Ephesians 6.10-‐‑18
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18
1 Timothy 6.12
12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
As we study and grow throughout the year, Satan will try to snatch away what we are learning. He will aRempt to steal away God’s word from our hearts, to keep it from changing us to be more like Jesus. We must fight to keep the word of God safe; we must treasure it up in our hearts and refuse to let it go!
Satan will aRempt to catch us and ensnare us with sin. The things that tempt us most will be laid out before us; we must be strong with the strength that God alone can give in order to resist him. We must refuse to sin and stand firm!
Satan will aRempt to devour those who are weak in faith; those who struggle are the most likely to be devoured. We must be vigilant in looking out for one another. We all have weaknesses, and we need the strength of other saints where we are weak. We must have courage to ask for help!
Satan will aRempt to deceive us, and steal away the word of Truth. We must focus on the words of God, the text of Scripture, and reject anything differing from it. We must consume the word of God and make it alone our guide!
Jesus came to destroy the works of the Devil. He did this by seeking and saving the lost of the world. In our fight against Satan and our striving to glorify God, one of the greatest things we can do is share the good news of Jesus with others. A good way to start is by praying for those we know need to hear the message. As we pray, we can begin our work with confidence that God is working with us to spread the word!

The God is powerful enough to create the universe is more than able to provide us with opportunities to share the gospel. Remember, God’s desire is that everyone would come to know the truth and be saved (1 Timothy 2.4). God not only desires it, but he sent Jesus to provide for and the Holy Spirit to empower it. Pray that we can used by God to bring more people to him!
Evangelism Prayer List
When the saints in the first century were forced from their homes, they went everywhere sharing the good news about Jesus. We live in a time when it’s easy to contact others; we can call them, write a leRer, send an e-‐‑mail, or text. Along with our prayers for evangelism, we need to take steps to contact others and share the gospel with them. Try to contact at least one person a month and share the good news of Jesus.

December ____________________________!The gospel is spread when people take the time to talk to other people. You know people and can influence people that no one else can. God has made you and placed you exactly where you need to be to save as many people as possible. You have unique gifts, experiences and insights that will help you reach others and share Jesus with them. God has done amazing things for us, but will we have the courage to allow God to do amazing things through us? Remember, Moses was afraid to share God’s message, too, but look what happened when he talked! Let’s talk about Jesus!
Evangelism Contact List
Paul warned the saints “not to neglect hospitality”. This word means having love for strangers -‐‑ people you don’t know well or aren’t related to. It’s easy to fall into the trap of spending time with the same people all the time; we need to make a concerted effort to spend time with different people, especially those we don’t know well. !January ______________________________

December ____________________________!There’s something special about having people in your home; you get to know one another in a way not possible in other seRings. It’s more than food; it’s the opening of ourselves to others in a loving way that is immediately visible. It doesn’t maRer if you have a four-‐‑course steak dinner or just PB&J. All that maRers is that we do it, and do it together. Have someone in your home, someone you don’t know well, at least once a month. Watch how the Lord works in bringing you closer together, giving you the change to help one another in our struggles against the Devil.
Hospitality List
Jesus shocked his disciples by at the Passover by washing their feet -‐‑ which was a job for servants! His powerful example shows us that life isn’t about being served, but serving others. Jesus didn’t come to take; he came to give. We show the love of Christ to others when we take the time to serve them, just like Jesus did with his disciples.

December ____________________________!Serving others shows that we care for them. In fact, Jesus said this was the way that people would be able to identify his disciples; they’re the ones who love other people enough to serve them. You can volunteer to work at a food pantry, mow a neighbor’s grass, help someone with computer trouble, babysit, help with yard work -‐‑ the list is endless! Use your imagination and come up with new ways to serve. Try to help at least one person a month by showing them the love of Jesus. Remember, this is a great way to introduce people to Jesus. It’s Jesus’ love for others that aRracts us to him, so expect to have opportunities to share Jesus while you’re showing his love to others.
Service List
Jesus preached what people needed to hear. He gave them spiritual information in small, axiomatic sayings that were easy to remember -‐‑ but not necessarily easy to do! The people in the first century needed someone to mold their character, to train them to be children of the Most High God. People today need the same thing; we need Jesus to teach us what it means to be a child of God.
Jesus taught the people about Kingdom Blessings. There is a huge difference between what pleases people and what pleases God. In the first century, just like today, people seemed to be more concerned with being successful in life than in storing up treasures in heaven. Jesus reminded his hearers that just because you were successful here didn’t mean that you would be well received in the heavenly kingdom . Someone who “has it made” here, doesn’t necessarily have it made in heaven.
The people who listened carefully to Jesus’ teachings would also hear him talk about Kingdom AOitudes. If we are going to be people who live for our eternal home, then we will cultivate aRitudes like our eternal Father. The world doesn’t foster godly aRitudes because they don’t always bring worldly success. For example, how many politicians always tell the truth? Being in the kingdom demands that we always
strive to tell the truth. While this may not make for a very promising career in politics, it makes for a very promising future with God!
In order to secure these blessings and change our aRitudes, we must learn to have a Kingdom Focus. Jesus called for his hearers to change their perspective from physical things to spiritual things. He called on people to stop following family, tradition, and worldly success in order to follow our heavenly Father. In the Kingdom of God, God is the center of aRention.
Finally, Jesus called upon people to make Kingdom Judgments. If we are going to become spiritually minded people who seek for God, then we must learn to make the same kinds of judgments that God does. Incidentally, this doesn’t involve deciding who will be saved; it involved the good judgment of leaving important decisions like that to the only one can properly make them: God. When we learn to have faith in the Father, we learnt to trust his judgments and accept his decisions. Only after we decide to truly follow God, can we become his children.
Jesus didn’t preach to be popular; his preaching would get him killed. He preached so that others could have life. Let us take advantage of the life that Jesus is offering to us! Let us listen to Jesus and build our lives on the Rock!
The Sermon on the Mount
!
When Jesus first begins his public ministry, he preaches the most famous sermon of all time in what is commonly called “The Sermon on the Mount”. Throughout the first several weeks of 2014, we will see the blessings that Jesus promises to everyone who becomes a member in the kingdom of God. The apostle Paul said that God has “blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places”, so let us strive to learn about the blessings we can have in Christ and to obtain our entrance into the kingdom!

Spiritual Focus: As we learn about the kingdom of God and the people who will enter into it, let us be those who hear the words of our savior, Jesus, and put them into practice. Let us strive to be peaceful and merciful, pure in heart and poor in spirit. These are the ones to whom the kingdom is given; let us be those who receive it with great joy!

Jesus made it a point to clarify that he didn’t come to replace the Old Testament Law. The view that the Old Testament Scriptures are cast aside to make way for the new is flawed; God’s word did not suddenly become useless now that Jesus was on the scene. Someone once said, “The New Testament is hidden within the Old, and the Old Testament is made plain in the New.” Jesus didn’t do away with the law, but fulfilled it’s promises. Jesus didn’t call people to a different morality, but to the high standard of morality that God has always required of his children. Let us be those seek to serve God with our whole hearts and minds, using all our strength to change our aRitudes.

Let us learn to trust in the Lord to the point that we are willing to change our lives!

Lesson 25 Being Perfect Like God -‐‑ MaRhew 5.43-‐‑48
It is impossible to serve God correctly if we have the wrong focus. The world teaches that we need to focus on physical success and selfish desires. Satan takes things that aren’t bad in themselves, but tempts us to overemphasize them to the point of sinning against God. Jesus called on his disciples to make God the focal point of their lives. In the kingdom of God, God is the focus. Our love for God should be the reason and power behind all we do. Let us train ourselves to focus on God and give him the glory!

Spiritual Focus: God, the creator of the heavens and earth, is the only one who knows how everything should really work. Everything was good when he created it, and he knows how to use all things for good. Not only is he worthy of our praise and adoration, but only through coming to know him can we have any hope viewing the world around us correctly. We must learn to focus on God first in all things and see his glory that surrounds us!

We cannot rely on our own judgment to determine right and wrong. We have been affected and changed by sin, so we need someone to show us what is right; we need God to direct our steps. Learning to have the same judgment as God is essential to living a life worthy of our high calling in Jesus. We must come to the word of God and let our Father instruct us in the righteousness that comes through faith.

It is important for us to ask questions about everything. We learn through honest questioning and answering. This is try whether the subject is math, science or religion. If we want to know more about God and Christianity, then we need to ask questions and honestly seek for answers. Question 12 Questions from atheists and logical, scriptural answers
!
