On the afternoon of January 28th, 14 Resident Assistants piled into three cars and a van and headed to Iowa. Oh, and they had three advisors go with them too. A three-hour drive through a blizzard that affected more than two dozen states ended upon their arrival at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Rapids. The UW-La Crosse delegation was a spirited one, with RAs participating in both the prepared and extemporaneous case study competitions as well as presenting programs to their counterparts from around the Midwest. The following RAs attended the 23rd RA Conference along with advisors Jeff Wettstein, Rob Peterson, and Richard Anderson: Alyssa Weber (WE), Andrew Kugle (CO), Brittany Harried (HU), Hanna Mixdorf (LA), Jayme Henry (RE), Mari Lentz (AN), Michelle Droese (PN), Nathali Niedorowski (SA), Sam Poppe (AN), Sara Schoonover (WH), Sarah Horstmann (CO), Sarah Schultz (SA), Van Nguyen (DR), Bill Emery (WH).

Programs of the MonthDecember/January Program Awards

It may be cold out but the programming offered to residents for December and January were a great diversion from the winter weather. Lots of exec. and resident help made many

of these programs possible. Without any delay here are your winners…

The Angell Exec Team and Ashley Maitland put on a Bachelor/Bachlorette program for the entire first semester of this current year. They had weekly challenges- Trivia Game, Scavenger Hunt, Dating Game, Jello Eating Contest, The Perfect Proposal, etc. They also had rose ceremonies occur following Hall Councils on Sunday nights. This program allowed residents to be active in the hall earlier on and gave them weekly programs that were fun and enjoyable.

The Great Escape Date was planned by Nicole Meulemans and Wentz Execs last December. With the assistance of James Bushman and Kelly Beall, an obstacle course was assembled in the basement. They took groups of residents through the course at three different time periods. Disabilities were assigned to certain people within each group such as being paralyzed, blind, or the loss of a limb. The groups were given vague directions and then had to try and maneuver their whole team through the obstacle course while avoiding traps. Afterwards, a debriefing took place where teamwork, leadership roles, strengths, and weaknesses were discussed with participants.

Booze Truths was Lindsey Thompson of Wentz Hall’s contribution last December. Starting Dec. 3rd and going to Dec. 20th, every 2 days she posted new true and false fact about alcohol. The residents could stick their name tacks that she made up next to the TRUE or FALSE on the board they believed to be true. Then she revealed the correct answer and put up a new fact. There was a lot of participation, up to 25 residents a question, and a lot of great discussion.

Interview Tips organized by Adam Bradley of Wentz Hall Staff and Stacie Phillips. Stacie and Adam wanted to help educate residents about interviewing and resume tips. For publicity they put a big balloon statue in front of the lobby. They asked staff from Career Services to come over and put on the program. As a result of the program the residents have a much better understanding of how to interview and how resumes work.

Social Action Theater organized by Becky Meulemans of Angell Staff and resident Shandel Vanhecke. Students from Shandel’s EFN class and their instructor, Bob Krajewski, presented skits about diversity issues in the lives of college students. In some of the skits, residents from the audience were asked to be actors as well. After each skit, residents could ask questions of the actors while they were still in their roles. There were cookies, hot cocoa, and candy canes as incentive for residents to stop down and participate. Residents got involved in the program and learned to be aware of diversity and to think about their actions in daily life.

In addition to our winners here are other programs of notes for December and January… Kindergarten Night planned by Tiffany McClintock and Jessica Nephew of Angell Hall; Drunken Decorating planned by Alyssa Weber, Max Dallman, Joshua DeMorett and Lacey Sheridan of Wentz Hall; Spoons Tourney planned by Lacey Sheridan of Wentz Hall; You Are Beautiful planned by Lacey Sheridan and Alyssa Weber of Wentz Hall; Ginger Bread House Making planned by Kjersti Olson of Angell Hall; Study Break! planned by Lindsey Thompson of Wentz Hall; Holiday Cards and Hot Chocolate planned by Nicole Meulemans of Wentz Hall; Olive Garden and a Movie planned by Lacey Sheridan of Wentz Hall; Twister with a Twist planned by Lacey Sheridan and Peter Smith of Wentz Hall; and R.A.I.S.E.
