Page 5: Once Upon A Stage Presentation

TÜà|áà|v cÉÄ|vçMWe believe:

1. It is possible for everyone to be creative and enjoy drama ; you don't have to be an 'actor'.

2. Performance can bring people together and help everyone recognize shared values and create a sense of community.

3. Bringing people together through performance not only provides entertainment, but also promotes co-operation and respect.

Therefore we will:

1. Involve as many members of the public as possible in large-scale performance events, combining all sectors of society. People of all age ranges and who have never done anything like this before will be encouraged to be involved.

2. Use common areas of understanding and interest e.g. fairytales, to connect with the public, and help them unite with each other and the dramatic form.

3. Show the end product to as many people as possible, all free of charge.

Page 6: Once Upon A Stage Presentation

g{x XäxÇàThe aim of the company is to put on a theatre event that would take place in a

day, and involve members of the public as the central actors.

1. Set up a stage and marquee area within the city centre.

2. Members of the public could come along and perform: acting scripted fairytales, rehearsing a scene for a short amount of time, then performing this (obviously scripts would be allowed to be read from), whilst being filmed.

3. Members of the public would be invited to watch all the performances that went on throughout the day.

4. All the scenes would then be put together in a film that would be shown at the end of the day, on a large screen in the city centre square.

5. This format of event could then be repeated across the country in different cities, depending upon the initial success of the first proposed event.

Page 7: Once Upon A Stage Presentation

g{x XäxÇàM U|ÜÅ|Çz{tÅDate: would take place 20/02/2010; 7am-10pm.

•Our project is about including everyone therefore the marketing must appeal to all.

•The media that we choose should be widespread to make sure everyone knows about the project.

•But not only does it have to appeal to the community but it must be cost effective within our budget.

Page 17: Once Upon A Stage Presentation

•Emailing people that might be interested is a good way to reach people.

•A mailing list, for example the Drama Department of Birmingham University, would be a good place to start.

•A local newspaper will get local people interested.

•The target audience of a local newspaper such as The Birmingham Post is similar to the people that we hope will attend our event .

•A small article or interview within the paper would help make people aware of what we are doing and hopefully spark further interest.

•Student newspapers, for example Redbrick would also be a good idea. This would be particularly effective and appealing to the newspapers as we are using student volunteers within our project.

•Part of the article could be directing people towards volunteering if they do not wish to participate.

XÅt|Ä

axãáÑtÑxÜá

Page 18: Once Upon A Stage Presentation

•Student radio such a Burn fm would be good for the same reasons as student newspapers.

•Many radio stations have sections titled ‘what’s going on in the area’ to highlight events that people might want to get involved in.

•Another idea would be to invite radio reporters down to the event on the day to account on the progress with the possibility of interviewing some of the participants.

•Getting good reviews from the participants is another great way to get people involved on the day.

Page 19: Once Upon A Stage Presentation

•Posters should offer relevant information for

example; time, date, location and further contact details

•Our image is also key it must captivate our audienceand persuade them to come along.

•It also needs to appeal to all; difficult as fairytales are traditionally more appealing to girls and children.

cÉáàxÜá

Page 20: Once Upon A Stage Presentation

Flyers are another good way of reaching a wide audience of people. They can be distributed widely;

• Victoria Square

• Community Centres

• Park cafés and local shops

• University gates

• Areas of the city centre to promote to weekend shoppers.

• Schools - This will tie in with the school activities as a reminder to the children of the event.

•A website is a great way to get information to lots of people. It appeals to a

large area of our target audience including young people and students.

•We have therefore created a website that will allow people to gain more

information about our event and access merchandise.

•The website is themed so that there is continuity between our other

promotional material.

http://www.onceuponastage.moonfruit.com/#

Page 22: Once Upon A Stage Presentation

• Sponsorship would be invaluable in not only raising awareness but also providing funding for our project.

• It will endorse our project making it legitimate to the public.

As our project is based in Birmingham we have contacted Cadbury World for sponsorship;

•Cadbury World is local to the Birmingham area

•We are a community based project therefore, it reflects well on them to support a local

project.

•As a result, they have offered £2,500 towards our project.

• Send an initial letter to the school explaining about our project and our desire for the project.

• Explain how the school will benefit from the project

• If the school agrees, we must make sure that letters are sent out to their parents from the school, in order to gain parental consent.

• Holding an afternoon workshop rather than going into after school clubs means we benefit in two ways:

1. Why would people want to act in your event?

What do they get out of it?

• Enjoyment

• Self confidence and belief

• Interaction with family/friends /strangers

• 5minutes of fame, chance to see themselves on the big screen or DVD

• Chance to showcase their talent

Page 43: Once Upon A Stage Presentation

2. Most people are too embarrassed to perform anything in public even if well prepared, why would these people not be?

• No pressure situation, the emphasis isn’t on acting well, it’s about having fun and having a go.

• Welcoming environment created by volunteers and organisers.

• Workshops in schools etc. • The 24 hour Shakespeare project put on by Point Blank

Theatre in Sheffield: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8117824.stm

• The rise of ‘Flashmobs’ over the past 5 years : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EYAUazLI9k

Page 44: Once Upon A Stage Presentation

3. Why is it a fairytale?

• A fairytale provides the chance for shared understandings and common values to be exposed.

• Fairytales have broad appeal.

• Fairytales are light hearted and relatively narrative simplistic.

Page 45: Once Upon A Stage Presentation

4. How is the film that you make not going to look absolutely appalling? Even brilliant theatre tends to look rubbish on video, imagine how shocking rubbish theatre would look! Who would want to put this on a big screen and why would people want to watch?

• Because our event is not about theatre per se it wouldn’t be about the quality of the resulting film.

• The unstructured nature of the performance and viewing system means it is highly inclusive, therefore encourages people to get involved as performers or members of the audience.

Page 46: Once Upon A Stage Presentation

5. Why do you want to do this project (even if it is hypothetical)? What purpose would it serve? Who would benefit from it anyway?

• Bringing people together, promoting a sense of community.

• Providing entertainment, enjoyment and experience of the dramatic form.

• Promoting self confidence and education.• Provide the opportunity for individuals to showcase

talent• Promoting achievement through togetherness.• This means everyone involved would benefit!
