Welcome to The Mercury Theatre and thank you for supporting Colchester Operatic Society.

As Chairman I preside over the Management Committee that runs the society. A committee that make all the day to day decisions that enable us to put productions like this on the stage. We in turn appoint a production team who take the reins of our show and turn it into the performance you are watching today.

Being on stage is a great deal of fun and hard work for the cast but behind the scenes a great deal of work goes on tirelessly to enable the cast to perform. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those credited here in the programme and those that are not, for their dedication, never ending loyalty and diligent endeavours that keep the society running. We are currently blessed with a great team of people that can be relied upon to carry out their duties and for me that is a great relief.

This production has been left in some very capable hands both on and off the stage. It is another first for COS and I hope you enjoy this richly diverse piece of musical theatre.

Thank you once again to all involved and especially you our audience.

Chairman & Business Manager

THE PRODUCTION TEAM

DIRECTOR—David Rutter This is David’s first time directing for COS, having been a member for the past 5

years. His first COS show was as Simon Zealotes in Jesus Christ Superstar, under

the expert direction of well-loved and sadly missed Dani Fincham. David trained

as an actor at Middlesex university and has performed in numerous shows, most

recently as Sweaty Eddie with COS in their 2016 production Sister Act. David’s

passion for performing led him to train as a Drama teacher, becoming a Head of

Drama at ‘The Colne school’ in Brightlingsea and now in Chelmsford. In this role

he has directed countless productions. Outside of school David has directed with

Braintree Musical Society and written his own World War 1 piece “While You

Were Away” to commemorate the centenary of the beginning of WW1. David also

recently formed his own production company, ‘OD Productions’ with Olly

Medlicott, directing Rent and A Chorus Line in their first year. David has

thoroughly enjoyed working with the cast and production team for Jekyll & Hyde.

MUSICAL DIRECTOR—Geoff Osborne Geoff has been a musical director for local societies for over 20 years, helping produce: Annie, Carousel, The Wizard of Oz, 42nd Street, Guys and Dolls, Crazy for You, Oliver, Oklahoma, Half a Sixpence, Sweet Charity, Anything Goes, Thoroughly Modern Millie, South Pacific, Little Shop of Horrors, The Addams Family, Fame, Singing in the Rain, Spamalot and many others. Until he retired from full time teaching in 2011, Geoff had dedicated his life to music education. He taught in local schools for 35 years, worked with Essex County Council in schools and colleges across the county and for a time was the teacher-in-charge at the Colchester Area Music School. Now living in Wivenhoe Geoff teaches privately, directs a community choir and enjoys spending time with his wonderful family. Geoff is delighted to have this opportunity to work with Colchester Operatic Society at the Mercury Theatre.

of 10. She went on to study Performing Arts at Italia Conti Academy in London, receiving various diplomas and qualifications in Dance, Drama,

Choreography and Singing. Amanda has continued to perform in plays and musical theatre productions throughout the country,

enjoying many roles such as Anne in Anne Frank, Geraldine in The Vicar of Dibley, Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music, Nickie in Sweet Charity and Sister Mary Patrick in Sister Act. She has also directed and choreographed many adult and youth pantomimes, plays and musical theatre productions in London as well

as running youth drama workshops. Amanda now sings in an Essex based three part vintage harmony group called

THE SHOW Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic thriller, Jekyll & Hyde is the gripping tale of a brilliant mind gone horrifically awry, set to a powerful pop-rock score by Frank Wildhorn with book and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse. Written in 1886 by Robert Louis Stevenson, the musical is cast in Stevenson’s original setting—Victorian London, circa 1884.

Jekyll & Hyde was a smash hit even from its 1990 trial run at the Alley Theatre in Houston. It wasn’t until seven years later that the musical made its Broadway debut, but its 1,543 acclaimed performances at the Plymouth Theatre made it the venue’s longest-running show.

THE STORY Shaken by his father's mental illness, Dr. Henry Jekyll invents a chemical that he believes can cure people afflicted with

debilitating mental illness by separating the good and evil of the human personality. He struggles to convince the Board of

Governors at the mental hospital to allow him to test the chemical on patients, even though he is set to marry the

Chairman's daughter, Emma.

Following an engagement party, Dr. Jekyll and his friend Utterson celebrate his bachelor party at a local club called the

Red Rat, where he is first drawn to the exotic and alluring Lucy. Returning to his home, he decides that he must test the

formula on himself. Jekyll transforms into Edward Hyde, and proceeds to explore London as his new alter-ego.

Stripped of the need to conform to society’s laws and expectations, Hyde’s depravity and thirst for revenge lead him to

carry out Dr Jekyll’s innermost and darkest desires. Lucy becomes the focus of Hyde’s lust, and those who were opposed

to Dr. Jekyll become the targets for vengeance. A killing spree ensues as Dr. Jekyll battles to hold on to his humanity and

defeat the monster he has created.

THE CAST

DR JEKYLL—Thomas Pleasant Tom attended Colchester Royal Grammar School, read accounting at University of Kent and

now works in London as an Underwriting Assistant for an insurance syndicate.

Tom has had a passion for musical theatre since joining a local drama school at the age of

10. He has been a member of various musical theatre societies over the last 10 years and has

had the opportunity to play some fantastic roles in this time. Despite his ties with musical

theatre and having been schooled in the area for 7 years, this is Tom's first show with

Colchester Operatic Society. He is confident it shall not be his last!

MR HYDE—Olly Medlicott Olly has enjoyed the opportunity to release his inner beast in this production, having

been cast in previous productions with Colchester Operatic Society, OD Productions

and Mad Hatter in more genteel roles.

When he is not murdering and debauching onstage, he teaches in a local school, and is

co-founder of OD Productions, a theatre company which is producing its first

original musical next June.

EMMA CAREW—Leanne Field Having lived and worked as a performer in a few different countries, Leanne settled in Dublin

for a number of years before recently returning to Essex. She now runs a

business with her mother, "Frederick Douglas Performing Arts Academy", teaching

children to sing and bringing movement into care homes. Leanne also works as a Tutor for

Funky voices.

With such a love for music and theatre she is delighted to be playing the role of Emma in her

first production with Colchester Operatic Society.

LUCY HARRIS—Giulia Cipriani Giulia was born in Rome and began playing the piano aged 6. Whilst at college in Italy

she took an interest in musical theatre and started singing and dancing lessons. In 2014 she moved to the UK to continue training in Musical Theatre at the University

Centre Colchester, from where she will soon be graduating. Sadly this may be Giulia’s last show with the society for a while as she is planning to

move to Cardiff in September to continue her musical theatre training at the Royal

Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Giulia has performed with the society at the Mercury Theatre in shows such as Legally

Blonde, Sister Act and Carousel and is thrilled to be playing the role of Lucy Harris.

SPIDER—ChiChi Armstrong ChiChi joined COS last year when she was cast as “Deloris” in the sell out production of “Sister Act”. She has a wealth of experience as a performer having sung with the well established London Community Gospel Choir, travelling worldwide, performing at 'Live 8' for Madonna and ministering in countries such as Ghana, Morocco, Austria and Germany, to name but a few. ChiChi has also been a session singer for 'Boney M' and appeared on several television performances including Songs of Praise. She is very excited to be back and very grateful to be playing this role.

SIR DANVERS CAREW—Graham Bowden Graham has been performing in shows for over thirty years.

Originally from the North West he spent some time in York and London before settling in

Colchester. Most recently he has played Sweeney in Sweeney Todd and Mr Cladwell from

the musical Urinetown, both at the Headgate theatre.

As a member of Colchester Operatic Society for 15 years he most recently played Burt in

42nd St and the bad Nazi Herr Zeller in Sound of Music.

MR UTTERSON—Sam Pilkington This is Sam's 11th production with COS and CO2 with past roles including Judas in

Godspell, Lancelot in Camelot, and Perchik in Fiddler on the Roof.

Having graduated with a degree in Music, Sam is still a keen musician and plays violin in a

ceilidh band as well as several orchestras in the Colchester and London areas.

Sam has made good friends in COS, even forming a band with two other members. The

acoustic rock trio, Wooden Maiden, have now been playing together for over 8 years.

SIMON STRIDE—Adam Duarte-Dias Adam has been involved in theatre for most of his life, and has yet to find any hobby

that feels quite so satisfying! He has performed alongside several different local

theatre companies, such as Platform Musicals, having recently performed as Bruce

Granit in 'On The Twentieth Century' and Anthony in 'Sweeney Todd'.

He is very proud to have been a part of these great shows, having had the chance to

meet some of the nicest and most talented people and is greatly looking forward to

this new experience with Colchester Operatic Society.

We are one of the region's oldest musical theatre companies and perform annually to rave reviews. Founded in

1924, the Society has gone from strength to strength and boasts a membership of over 150 people.

We currently produce two main shows a year - one two-week run in the early year by our main society members

aged 16 and over, and another run by our junior society members (CO2) aged 11 - 23.

In addition, we also perform our annual spring concert at a variety of venues throughout Colchester. We are also

often in demand at smaller functions such as fundraising events, carol singing and one off performances.

As well as a strong COS membership, our junior members group, known collectively as 'CO2' (Colchester Operatic

Society Second Edition) is incredibly popular and the Society prides itself on the number of young people who have

gone on from CO2, through COS and on to form successful careers within the theatrical industry. Many of these are

currently performing on West End stages and on your TV screens!

Nevertheless, the dream of a future career in theatre is not a pre-requisite for joining the Society - for many of our

members it is being part of an exciting theatrical project that interests them. Whether your forte is acting, dancing,

singing or assisting in other aspects of the production, there is something for you in COS.
