ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM & WORKSHOP

The RMTBC is pleased to present a two-day symposium and workshop dedicated to ground breaking, science-backed research on the benefits of registered massage therapy to the field of oncology. Internationally renowned speakers will stimulate a dialogue between colleagues to:

- Promote the exchange of experiences and new ideas

- Start and continue a network around scientific and evidence-based practice

- Make an inventory of the possibilities for registered massage therapy and oncology

All aimed at sustaining and stimulating the independence and wellness of patients.

Participants and speakers are expected to spend all day at the venue with breakfast, coffee breaks, lunch and a social reception all taking place in the exhibition area.

WHO WILL ATTEND

We are expecting 400 participants with a diverse audience of healthcare professionals, mainly from the manual disciplines. Presentations will address the science and practice of working with oncology professionals in an approach to optimized care. Sound science will underpin theoretical constructs. Participants are expecting to increase their understanding of various clinical approaches by learning of the most recent developments in the field.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS & PANELISTS

PANELIST | Gayle MacDonald, MS, LMT

Gayle MacDonald, MS, LMT, began her career in 1973 as a secondary school health teacher. In 1989, she became a massage therapist, which lead to the blending of her first two careers. After finishing massage school, she started teaching Body-Mind education for massage students. A serendipitous phone call in 1993 led her to develop a hospital massage program for cancer patients at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon. Over time, MacDonald worked with heart transplant patients, women hospitalized because of a high-risk pregnancy, orthopedic and general medicine patients.

Gayle is a pioneer. Her book, “Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People with Cancer” (Findhorn Press) was pivotal in overcoming the myth that people with cancer could not have massage due to the fear of metastasis. She wrote the first modern hospital massage text, “Massage for the Hospital Patient and Medically Frail Patient” (Lippincott Williams and Wilkins). She has travelled the United States, Canada, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, The Netherlands, and Belgium sharing what she has learned since starting at OHSU.
