I HATE MOTHERS
ADVISOR ’S NOTE
Dedication…Commitment…Vision…Patience…Laughter…These are all words that come to mind when I think about the four wonderful young ladies who have stepped into the director role for these productions. It has been a true pleasure watching these directors develop over the course of the rehearsal process, and it has been interesting to hear their perspectives as directors rather than as actresses; I believe this has been an incredible learning experience for all involved: the directors, the casts, and yes, even for me.
I love everything about theatre, but the thing I love the most about the student-directed one-act plays is that they provide opportunities for a wide variety of students to be involved in Nicolet Theatre: underclassmen as well as upperclass-men and non-experienced actors and actresses as well as experienced ones. The one-act plays provide a more intimate, perhaps less intimidating, stage for those who may just be starting out in theatre, and they offer many opportunities for involvement, whether a person enjoys acting, working on stage crew, or trying his or her hand at directing. I would like to sincerely thank Mr. Miller for provid-ing these opportunities for all Nicolet students and for trusting me to provide the needed guidance to the one-act directors; I certainly appreciate the time, energy, and passion Mr. Miller dedicates to all aspects of Nicolet Theatre.
To the casts and prompters of the one-act plays: Thank you for the positive energy and enthusiasm you have brought to this year’s productions; I have truly enjoyed watching you grow and develop your talents over the past several weeks. Theatre is a wonderful thing; don’t ever lose your passion for it
To the crews of the one-act plays: Thank you for your dedication to pulling all of the necessary details together to make these productions successful; without you, the shows most certainly could not go on.
And finally…to the four amazing directors of the one-act plays—Loren, Meg, Melissa, and Mikaela: Thank you for your commitment, your insight, your sense of humor, and your passion. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching each of you direct your cast in your own unique style; you have conducted yourselves with the utmost maturity, integrity, and dedication to your craft, and you overcame any challenge you encountered with patience and grace. I am proud of all of you, and I hope you take the time to enjoy your success.
Thank you to everyone for your support of Nicolet Theatre; I hope you enjoy the shows.

Hit The BooksBy Dwayne Yancey
Directed by Melissa Watton
DIRECTOR ’S NOTE
Have you ever wished you could skip hours of studying and simply learn the contents of a book through the wonders of osmosis? The characters in Hit The Books have taken that concept to a whole new level by becoming the people inside. Smack after smack and head blow after head blow, five college kids transform into many outrageous characters.
As much fun as I’ve had directing this show, it also came with its challenges. Mr. M, I will never understand how you make it look so effortless. If people really could learn informa-tion by hitting themselves with books, you can bet your bottom dollar that I would have knocked myself out with a copy of Directing For Dummies. Fortunately, I got to work with some truly talented people without whom this show would never have come together.
Hilary, Kayla, Audrey, Sydney, and Quinn, I couldn’t have asked for a better cast. Even though this is your first Nicolet show, I can already tell how dedicated you are and I hope you had as much crazy fun as I did. Although we sometimes got off track with trick-or-treating and talking about a variety of other random things, I’m so proud of how hard you’ve worked. Taylor, thank you so much for all your help. There is no way I could have gotten this show together without having you there to help me out everyday. I hope this experience has showed you how much fun you can have working on a show from be-hind the scenes. Ms. Zeimentz and Nancy, thank you for all the advice and support you’ve put into these shows. My fellow directors, Mikaela, Meg, and Loren, it was truly wonderful to experience this aspect of theatre with three of my closest friends. Enjoy the show!

Reese and BabeBy Lew Holton
Directed by Meg Allen
DIRECTOR ’S NOTE
Directing Reese and Babe has truly been an exhilarating experience. It’s been a stressful, loveable, and exciting show to work on for the past four weeks. The cast has worked so hard to get where they are and I am so proud. This show has so many differ-ent elements. From miming and honking, to strange characters with good intentions. It still makes me laugh. For this, I have a fair amount of people to acknowledge. To my cast, I couldn’t have asked for a lovelier group of people. We had our rough spots, but always got through. Ellie and Cole, I hope you’re first show was an enjoyable experience and I hope you are now as hooked as I was after my first show. Please stay involved, you both can go far in this department. Julie and Parker, I’ve seen you both grow so much over four weeks. Thank you for your dedication and ability to follow my crazy trains of thought. You worked so hard, and gave it everything you had. When I look back on this show, I could not have pictured it any other way. Thank you all for being so wonderful. Angel, I said it once and I’ll say it again, I couldn’t have done this without you. When I was indecisive, you were right there to tell me that it made no sense to have the clown jump on the couch. You were so helpful, and everything that I could have asked for. You stuck with me even through the push-ups for missed lines and crazy games of “zip-zap-zop.” I love you with all of my heart, and thank you.
To Mikaela, Loren, and Melissa, this has been crazy. The stress we all shared and the amount of work we put in was just spectacular. It all paid off in the end, because each of you has an excellent show. I’m glad I was able to work with three inspiring people. Once again, this show has been a blast. The miming is crazy, and the story line has so many different parts. I hope you find it as enjoyable as I still do. Thank you for coming and enjoy the show.

No ChewingBy Sarah C. James
Directed by Loren Wright
DIRECTOR ’S NOTE
This show snuck up on me. I’ll be the first to say that I had difficulty choosing a one-act this summer; in the end, of course, I chose No Chewing, but I wasn’t in love. I liked it, sure, but I didn’t love it. Mr. M said I would grow to love it, though, and as always, he was right. I liked it, I liked it, I liked it, and then one day – BAM – the show was my everything.
I couldn’t have done it without Emily, who helped me every step of the way as my assistant. Not surprisingly, directing is hard, and I couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you to my wonderful cast, Ella, Max, and Hannah, who made a seem-ingly impossible task within reach. Thanks to my family, who dealt with the cranki-ness from too many late nights and also just my general insanity. I couldn’t have done this without your support. Ms. Zeimentz – you were an angel. Something about you just puts everyone at ease, and your advice was invaluable.
And last but not least: Mr. M. You told me once that after I’d been directing for thirty years, I’d be able to direct like you can. Well, I have a month and a half under my belt, and I can confirm that I am nowhere close to what you can do. I have a new-found appreciation for all that you do for us theatre kids. I don’t think we can ever thank you enough.
Enjoy the show! And please, no chewing in the theatre!

5One- Act Plays
I Hate MothersBy James Reyfield
Directed by Mikaela Zetley
DIRECTOR ’S NOTE
The mother role in a show, as I like to believe, is given to a girl who can really under-stand the depth of an older, wiser, more complicated character. And throughout my time in theatre, I have been gifted this role many a time. The girl playing mother in “Petunias” has also frequented roles of this kind, but she doesn’t see playing the mother in the same light. In each show, she is forced to wear the same ugly dress and grey wig while supporting the younger, taller, prettier girls who play the ingé-nue and get to kiss every leading man to step on the stage. This play is about what happens when a high school girl gets fed up with playing the mother and takes the show into her own hands in order to end the story the way she wants.
Never having directed anything before, directing a one act was a completely new undertaking for me. I was very apprehensive at the start, but as the time went on, this has been one of my favorite and most memorable plays at Nicolet. Many of the wonderful memories I have to remember from this experience are directly related to my cast. Eva, Rahul, and Sidney- thank you so much for giving this show everything you have. You have worked incredibly hard on each of your roles and I am so proud of you. Also, thank you to Kailey, you have been wonderful to work with. I would like to give a very special thank you to Ms. Zeimentz and Mr. Miller. I have been truly privileged to work with you, and also fortunate to have been able to see directing from your perspective. Thank you again to all of you who have helped me to make this show a reality. Enjoy experiencing what happens to a show when the actors take over!
