In Your Backyard and Around the World

The environment is where we live, work, learn and play. It is our drinking water, our neighborhood parks, our children’s schools, the air we breathe and the food we eat.

Take care of our environment and it will take care of you.

Earth Share of New Jersey is part of a nationwide network of the world’s most respected environmental and conservation organizations, working hard every day to safeguard the precious natural resources we all depend on for our health, well-being and recreation.

The health of our environment affects our own personal health in many critical ways. Here’s what our member groups are doing in some key areas to protect public health and preserve the world around us:

Protecting our children from exposure to dangerous pesticides in their schools.

Pesticides harm our nervous systems, causing muscle weakness, respiratory agitation, nervousness and irritability, as well as several other symptoms.

Thanks to the joint efforts of Earth Share of New Jersey’s member groups, thousands of school districts in more than 30 states, including New Jersey, have implemented safe alternatives through Integrated Pest Management systems, resulting in safer, healthier environments for millions of school children. Resources are also now available to help parents identify important questions to ask their local administrators about their children’s schools.

Your payroll contribution or personal gift to Earth Share of New Jersey will help our member groups address these and other serious threats to our air, water, land and wildlife. Please visit www.earthsharenj.org to learn more about the work of Earth Share of New Jersey’s member organizations. Your support will help Earth Share of New Jersey’s member charities continue to expand their efforts to preserve and protect our health, our environment and our future.

Protecting infants and unborn children from exposure to toxic chemicals commonly found in our daily lives, and which are increasingly present in mothers’ breast milk.

Levels of certain toxic chemicals in humans are doubling every two to five years.

In partnership with 400 groups in its BE SAFE campaign, one Earth Share of New Jersey member is leading a national public awareness initiative to focus media attention on the need to stop asking “What level of harm is acceptable?” and start asking “How can we prevent harm?” With more than 234 media events in 34 states, the campaign is focusing on a range of environmental health issues, including Toxic Chemical Policies and Healthy Schools.

Helping to combat obesity and its related health issues by establishing community parks and gardens, and trails for biking, hiking and a multitude of recreational opportunities.

Heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes are all linked to obesity.

Earth Share of New Jersey members have created more than 12,500 miles of rail-trails, provided 1.5 million hours of volunteer service to maintain our parks and trails, and protected millions of acres of open space for urban parks, community gardens, greenways and forestland all over this country and New Jersey. These natural areas including the Highland, Pinelands, estuaries and watersheds also create healthy ecosystems to support local wildlife.

Preventing mercury poisoning and its side effects, including neurological damage.

Mercury is released into our air, settles in our water sources, is absorbed by our food systems, and is ingested in humans simply by breathing, drinking and eating.

Earth Share of New Jersey members work for better enforcement of EPA regulations, improved legislation and emissions controls, safer agricultural techniques, and countless other initiatives to help protect the environment we live in; the air we breathe, water we drink, food we eat, and land we live on.

Protect endangered or threatened species and their habitats around the world, including wetlands, lakes, mountains and deserts.

Earth Share of New Jersey members preserve millions of acres of wildlife habitat and continually strive to protect additional areas that are critical to diverse species. From the largest and wildest grassland remaining on public lands in the U.S. to tropical forests in the Amazon, millions of acres of land came under protection in 2004, improving the chance of survival for thousands of threatened or endangered species.
