Kiwanis hasn’t stopped doing service. We need to look

for new ways to serve. We are our community’s leaders.

One of the biggest ways we can serve right now is by

connecting with others, especially those who are alone.

Here is a list of ideas from your fellow Kiwanians:

• Give blood.

• Call a Kiwanian! Start a call tree and reach out to your

members, especially those who don’t use computers.

• Fill someone’s bird feeder.

• Deliver dog food/cat food to your humane society (you

can even order online and have it delivered).

• Mail letters. Get out those photos, make a note on them

and send them to someone.

• Clean your neighborhood as you go on walks (be sure

to wear gloves).

• Clean a senior’s yard.

• Write that novel.

• Check with the school you have been reading for. Do a

Facebook live reading for the kiddos.

• Medford Kiwanis is having a Laws of Life contest, asking

8th grade students to write a story about someone who

is important in their life.

• Brighten someone’s day.

• Run errands for those who can’t do their own such as

getting their groceries.

• Give to the food pantry.

• Interclub! Check when other clubs are meeting virtually

and join them.

• Find out who in your community needs help and

connect with them.

• Have a fundraiser within your club and ask members to

give to a selected charity.

WE MAY BE HOME, BUT WE ARE NOT HOME ALONE…LET US KIWANIS ON!By Roger Krogstad, DVM, 2019-2020 WI-UM Kiwanis District Governor

Kiwanis International and your

WI-UM District are still ‘open for

business’. We are adapting to

the same rules and restrictions

imposed by current conditions

as are you and your clubs. Your

membership and dedication to

Kiwanis are extremely important

in these challenging times. Let us

‘Kiwanis on’.

Many clubs have already begun meeting online using

the Zoom virtual meeting app in support of each other

and to make plans for the future. For some, this after a

canceled major fundraiser or service project. To keep

things in focus, our Kiwanis International Trustee, Ron

Smith, told me last year at the District Convention “Roger,

Kiwanis is not meetings, it is service.” So now what can we

do? Are you ready to take on these new challenges?

This edition of the Kiwanews is being mailed to all 3,500

plus members to tell you that Kiwanis cares for you and

we stand with you. Additionally, Kiwanis International is

providing much supportive information to the District for

us to share with our clubs and members. Much of that

information is being provided in this publication.

There is still much for Kiwanians to do for kids and your

communities. Are you ready to adapt? I, as many of you,

are in that 70-plus higher-risk age group. We, however,

are also in that 25-plus year Kiwanis membership group

who are the historical foundation for our clubs. We are

ready to go to work on Kiwanis service from our homes.

Past Kiwanis International President Jane Erickson said

recently of the situation “we may be home, but we are not

home alone.” We have each other in our Kiwanis family.

Krogstad can be reached by phone at 715-207-2720 or

KIWANIS DISTRICT CONVENTIONWe are optimistic that the WI-UM District Convention

planned for August 21-23 in Madison will happen.

Much is dependent on the direction of the Covid-19

Pandemic and social distancing guidelines.

“Team Kiwanis” will be the

theme highlighting our

Badger and Packer sports

teams. Educational and informational seminars as

well as leadership training will be offered. Watch for

the next edition of the Kiwanews for an update. We

are keeping our fingers crossed but the safety of our

members is our priority.

DISTRICT AIMS TO SUPPORT YOU!By John Collins, 2016-2017 WI-UM District Governor

Do you need any information about Kiwanis?

Would you like to explore new ideas for

Are you seeking ways to connect with

members?

Would ideas for new service projects intrigue you?

• Do you remember at Christmas time, when your club

would adopt a family? Contact a senior community

and ask them for a person who is lonely, then adopt a

senior. Become pen pals. Call them. Connect.

• Seniors, the phone works both ways. Call the family and

talk with your kids.

• Schedule a time to talk to the grandkids. Their

exhausted parents will appreciate the break.

Let your community see Kiwanis in action!

A MESSAGE OF HOPE FOR OUR BELOVED KIWANIS FAMILY MEMBERSSubmitted by Jean Long Manteufel, 2019-2020 WI-UM Kiwanis District Governor-elect

Our goal with this newsletter is to reach

every member of our Kiwanis family. We

love Kiwanis and want you to know that

we are here for you.

• Your community: Your Kiwanis leadership and ideas are

needed now more than ever. This is your club’s chance

to shine!

• We Can: Instead of cancelling meetings, service and

fundraisers, start with “We Can”. Ask yourself if there is

another way you can carry on your event, even if it is in

a different version.

• Meetings: How can you still connect? We joined for the

fellowship and service. Keep it going.

• Fun: Remember to put some fun into your meetings.

Maybe, start it with “My 1-1-1”: one good thing, one

thing you need help with, and one thing you are

looking forward to.

• Sponsored programs: Reach out to your Key Clubs.

They are still making plans for the future. So is Circle K.

On April 25th, Circle K is holding their Spring Fling. This

year, it will be virtual. They will be inviting us all to join

them for the fun. They haven’t cancelled it; they are just

finding ways to work around it. What a breath of fresh

air they are! Tune in.

• Service: You may be surprised at what new ideas you

can come up with to continue serving others.

Share our Kiwanis fellowship — with your club and with

anyone you can. We are all in this together.

2019-2020 WI-UM Kiwanis District Governor-elect Jean

Governor-elect Jean Long Manteufel wants everyone to know that Kiwanis loves you and that we are here for you!

SPREADING THE LOVE IN DARBOYDarboy Kiwanian John Schultz reports that the club

is making 400 yard signs to share the encouraging

message that Kindness is not Cancelled!

TECH ADVOCATE NEEDED!Kiwanis International has free websites for all clubs!

Before we can offer this to clubs in our WI-UM

District, we need someone (or more) to learn the

ropes and be the go-to person for clubs who would

like to use the website. Without tech advocates, we

can’t offer this to our members. Do you have the

technical skills to step up and help? There will be

training from Kiwanis International via GoToMeeting.

Please contact Jean Long Manteufel at 920-585-7769

or [email protected] for more information or to

volunteer as a tech advocate.

HOW TO HOLD A ZOOM MEETING ONLINE IN THREE EASY STEPSSubmitted by Anna Bruhn, District Membership and Engagement Co-chair

Our Kiwanis clubs

have temporarily

been asked to stop

meeting face-to-face.

You can imagine the

response. But wait! We

can still meet if we use

a service like Zoom or

GoToMeeting.

At the District level we use Zoom to hold weekly

Membership and Engagement Team meetings. You can

easily use Zoom to hold your club’s meetings, too!

What is Zoom?

Zoom is a website — a software service — that allows

groups to hold meetings using the internet. Both video

and voice are transmitted to everyone in the meeting.

How does it work?

1) From within a Zoom account, a meeting is scheduled.

It looks like any other meeting with a name, date, time

and description but instead of a physical location, the

meeting is assigned a website link.

2) Share the link you are given, along with the additional

instructions, with your attendees.

3) At the appointed date and time, everyone who has

received the invitation will click on the link and join

the meeting.

Helpful Tips

The club should hold the Zoom account. Each member

does not need to have their own Zoom account.

Attendees who do not have a computer or have lousy

internet service can use their phone to call in or even link

into the meeting.

What does it cost?

There are a few options. First, ask if one of your members

already has an account. It is likely someone does. If not,

there is a free version that doesn’t allow phone call-ins

and is limited to 40 minutes or one that costs $14.99 per

month which allows longer meetings and phone call-ins.

Consider if keeping in touch with your members is worth

the investment. I’ll bet it is.

Want to talk to a human? Please contact Anna Bruhn.

She will be glad to help you. A member of the Elm Grove

Golden K Club said “if our club can do it, anyone can”!

Past Governor Anna Bruhn can be reached by phone at

608-393-6811 or by email at [email protected].

NEW ASHWAUBENON CLUB MEETS VIRTUALLY TO PLAN CHARTERSubmitted by Dale Vannes, District M&E Co-chair

The newest club in our District is the Ashwaubenon

Kiwanis Club. They were recently organized and are

in the planning stages for their charter night as well

as several other efforts they want to implement. Club

members want to be in touch with others and meet

any way they can so they are holding virtual

meetings. Embrace Ashwaubenon’s passion

for venturing forward with new technology

by planning your virtual meetings today!

WI-UM KIWANIS DISTRICT LT. GOVERNORS ARE HERE TO HELP YOUSubmitted by Tim Lubinsky, Division 9 Lt. Governor

Club officers, please utilize your division’s Lt. Governor.

The primary responsibility of a Lt. Governor is to act as a

liaison between a Kiwanis club and the District governor,

District appointees and committee chairs. Lt. Governors

have held club offices such

as vice president, president-

elect and president. They have

experienced what you are now

going through. Please feel that

you are being supported and

have access to information to

continuously improve your club.

Two tools the District offers to support clubs are the

WI-UM Kiwanis District website (www.wiumkiwanis.org)

and the Kiwanews. Club officers should know how to

use the menu on the District website. The club secretary

should be able to use the District dashboard. The

Kiwanews tells you who other clubs are in your division,

important Kiwanis dates and who all the District officers

and chairpersons are, along with contact numbers.

If these tools do not provide a satisfactory answer to your

questions or concerns, please contact your Lt. Governor.

He or she will help you. If they don’t have an answer to

your questions, they will seek one and get back to you.

Lt. Governors are available to do more than install club

officers and directors. Please schedule your Lt. Governor

to visit your club and present a program. Lt. Governors

can also make recommendations like bringing in a club

coach or having the Membership and Engagement team

come to present ideas. Make an effort to stay acquainted

with your Lt. Governor, by email or phone. We are here

for you!

SUPPORT KIDS ON THE SPECTRUM DURING AUTISM AWARENESS MONTHSubmitted by Mike Hipple, Division 10 Lt. Governor

April is autism awareness month! A family with a child

on the autism spectrum might need speech,

behavioral or occupational therapy. Bills can

be expensive if families don’t have insurance.

Non-profit organizations such as ACT today,

an organization that pays for therapies,

sensory toys like a ball pit or trampoline,

iPads or equipment like a fence to keep their

child safe, are seeking funding. The Kiwanis

Autism Project is our District’s signature project. It

focuses on providing iPads and related apps to children

on the autism spectrum from families with financial need.

If your club is looking for things to help with during this

pandemic, why not do a fundraiser at home by

calling up your family and friends and asking

them for a donation. They donated or went

to a fundraiser before, why not now? I bet

that your club might be able to donate $50

to $500 or more to an autism-focused non-

profit or to our District signature project.

These programs are life saving for these

families. To give you an idea, behavioral therapy

could cost $300 an hour. Remember to have fun doing

this. Happy autism awareness month everyone!

APPLETON-FOX CITIES CLUB AWARDS IPAD TO A YOUNG BOY ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUMSubmitted by Jean Long Manteufel,

2019-2020 WI-UM Kiwanis District Governor-elect

With schools currently shuttered, some children who

normally have access to an iPad or other technology at

school to facilitate communication are trying to manage

without it at home. Now, more than ever, children on the

autism spectrum may need an iPad and communication

apps to help them during this “safer at home” period.

On Thursday, April 3, the Appleton-Fox Cities Kiwanis

Club awarded an iPad to a child on the autism spectrum.

The parents of our new friend were excited to receive the

iPad as well as the Proloque2Go app. They are currently

learning all the wonderful things the iPad has to offer to

help their son become more verbal when at home.
