The Greerton Swim Club, its members and Board are very proud of our new editions to the GSC Club corner, our notice boards. We are very grateful to Legacy Trust for their financial assistance in helping us complete our Club corner area. Come and check it out!

Wellington Summer Champs 20th – 22nd January, 2018

Our senior swimmers competed at the Wellington Summer Champs in January. There were some great pbs and swims from the entire team throughout the 3 day meet.

The GSC Board and its members are very grateful to North and South Trust for their support. Wendy Bradley our funding grants officer, applied to North and South Trust and was successful at raising funds to cover the costs of accomdation for our camp swimmers in Wellington.

A big thank you to North & South Trust and Wendy Bradley.

Swim team at Weir House, Wellington

The GSC boys had some great results. In the 50 Fly Gold was won by Louis, Bronze by Louis and silver by Connor and Lochlainn. All 4 boys contested the 100 Fly and all 4 won gold. The GSC boys finished second club on points behind Capital.

SO Senior Summer Swim Camp

The Wellington team took 4 days to travel back up the West coast and train at some lovely long course pools on the way. Fielding, Hawera and New Plymouth’s Aquatic facilities were impressive.

Greerton’s long lost twin at Whanganui.

The last day of swim camp was topped off by swimming with the NZ High Performance team in New Plymouth.

High Performance Swimming NZ names Mia in the NZ 2018 Oceania Open Water Team on

26th January Congratulations to Mia who has been selected to represent New Zealand at the 2018 Oceania Open Water Champ alongside fellow BOP swimmer David Boles. Dedication always pays off eventually.

Greerton Cash Meet, 2nd February, 2018

Thank you to everyone for your support at our recent Cash Meet. We had 183 registered for our meet. We hope you enjoyed watching the

swimmers in action and the swimmers had some fun. Some may have earnt a few $$$$ too! A huge thank you to all of the GSC parents that assisted with jobs at the meet in some shape or form: Announcer, 3 x Team Managers, Marshalling, Cash Prizes and Raffle to name a few. Debbie kept us well fed last night looking after all of us with the delicious provided by GSC families.

Thank you to our GSC coaches Tai and Riccardo. A big thank you to all of our officials and timekeepers. We can't get a meet approved without all of your support. Thank you all so much. GSC Gold/Silver Squad helpers: Thanks for all of your help with marshalling, timekeeping, food and water delivery as well. Last and certainly not least a HUGE thank you to the Bay Venues staff for staying on later than normal for a Friday night. We are very grateful for your support of our meet.

NZ Aquaknights Junior Festival, 16th – 18th February, 2018

The New Zealand Junior Swimming Festival is the biggest event on the national swim calendar for swimmers aged 12 and under and is held simultaneously in four centres across the country. Rotorua played the local host this year and saw some fantastic swimming. Greerton Swim Club finished top ranked of the local Tauranga clubs with cross town rival Otumoetai in hot pursuit. Outstanding for the seventeen strong Greerton contingent was 12 year old Talitha McEwan who won three gold medals along with 3 bronzes and scored high placings in a number of other events. Always a strong distance freestyler she swam 4:48.10 in the 400m freestyle and 2:18.10 over the 200m. However junior development coach Riccardo Pini would have been most impressed with her win in the 400m individual medley highlighting her recent gains over all strokes. Fellow 12 year old Caitlin Farrell backed up with a large points score but was unable to nail a podium finish swimming five times in to the final 8. Jessica Pilbrow (10) was a surprise gold medallist in the 100m breaststroke swimming a big 4.55 second personal best to oust Napier’s Kate Young by a mere 0.09 seconds. She also won bronze in the 50m breaststroke and finished fourth in the 200m. Eleven year old Shaeli Brewer performed with superb high-performance consistency resulting in four silver medals, one bronze and a

fourth. In her sprints, Shaeli gave the BOP record books cause for consternation with some big PB’s and missed gold in the 50m butterfly by an agonizing 0.05 seconds. Ariana Roberts, also 11, was a big improver completing a solid schedule of ten events over the three days. Nine of those events were best times with the pick being a pacey 1:13.24 100m freestyle to slot into the top 8 matching her 200m freestyle placing. Liam Jury (10) swam seven best times from seven events scoring the unlucky 4th in both the 50m and 100m butterfly races. Fellow 10 year old Will Quin also scored points for the team as did older brother Zach (11) showing good return to form swimming personal bests in all his events resulting in three top 8s.

GSC Secretary, Paula Farrell.

Grant Officer, Wendy Bradley. Wendy would like to train someone up in after the Xmas holidays. She will be applying for grants in late January / early February so it would be great if we could find someone to start learning this role then.

IOTS, Starters, JOS and Referees

Swim BOP recently highlighted at their AGM the limited number of Technical Officials available within the region. It would be great for the GSC and BOP region, if we could have some more parents looking to train as an IOT (Inspector of Turns), Starter, JOS (Judge of Strokes) and Referees. If you are interested please talk to any of the GSC IOT’s, who will be happy and able to tell you the process that is followed and how we can get you trained up and qualified. Everyone starts as a Time Keeper and then progresses through the technical officials.

A reminder to all of our Timekeepers and IOT’s. If you volunteer to time-keep or IOT at a meet, please ensure you wear your white GSC polo shirt. We are very proud of our Club and our volunteers. Please wear your club shirt so we look united and professional. If you need a shirt, please contact Janine Browne at [email protected]

AOD and Meet Manager Operators:

We are still looking for any parents that may be interested in learning how to run the AOD system (touch pads) and the Meet Manager system (computer operator of the results). Please contact Michael, Paula or Pauline if you are keen.

New Members:

Welcome to all new swimmers and their families to the Greerton Club. Any new parents needing help, or guidance, please contact our new swimmer/parent liaison. Andy Fitzjohn, phone 0210681981.
