Employee volunteer readers, tutors and mentors can help students:
n Enter school ready to succeed
n Read proficiently by fourth grade
n Make a successful transition into and out of middle school
n Graduate from high school on time
n Be ready for success in college, work and life
The difference between a student graduating or dropping out could be you.
WHY IS UNITED WAY RECRUITING ONE MILLION VOLUNTEER READERS TUTORS AND MENTORS?
AMERICANS VALUE EDUCATION AND THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT A GOOD EDUCATION PROVIDES,
AND THEY KNOW THAT WHEN STUDENTS DROP OUT OF SCHOOL, COMMUNITIES SUFFER. THE
SCOPE OF THE DROPOUT PROBLEM IS STAGGERING. ABOUT ONE QUARTER OF ALL STUDENTS
– ONE MILLION STUDENTS A YEAR, 3,000 A DAY – FAIL TO GRADUATE ON TIME. IN SOME
LARGE URBAN DISTRICTS, THE PERCENTAGE IS CLOSER TO HALF OF STUDENTS, WITH THE
PROBLEM MOST ACUTE FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN AND HISPANIC YOUTH.
Throughout 2010, United Way spent time listening. We talked to people in communities across the
country to learn more about their hopes and aspirations when it comes to education. Above all, we
heard that everyday people are willing to do whatever it takes to set children up for success. While
much of the attention and responsibility has been placed on schools, the people we heard from said
again and again that while schools play an important role, communities and individuals have to step
forward too.
That’s why, on June 21, 2011, United Way launched its commitment to recruit one million volunteer
readers, tutors and mentors to help students succeed. We want one million people – including employ-
ees from Global Corporate Leadership companies across the U.S. – to join us over the next three years.
Anyone with passion and commitment can help a young person achieve greater academic success.
We can’t focus on high school alone. Students who drop out of high school are 18 years in the making,
and it starts with early childhood education. By focusing on building kids’ academic skills starting
in the early years by reading, tutoring and mentoring, employee volunteers can set them on the path
to graduation.

READING
Employees can make the difference by:

Reading and helping children engage in storytelling is a fun and easy way for a volunteer to support literacy development. Here are a few tips for reading with children:
1. HAVE FUN
n Practice ABC songs and poems together.n Be expressive. Add sounds. Make the snake hiss and the door creak.n Sing, rap or chant the words and invite your reading buddy to join in.
2. ENGAGE THE CHILD
n Ask “what do you think happens next?” and “why did they do that?”n Let the child follow along with finger and turn the pages.
3. BE A CHEERLEADER
n Offer specific praise, such as “good job sounding that word out!”n Give kids time to figure out words and encourage them along the way.
HOW CAN EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEERS HELP STUDENTS SUCCEED THROUGH READING?
Poor academic skills are often rooted in family environments in which adults don’t talk a lot
with children, or surround them with books and other reading materials. As a child grows,
reading becomes increasingly important for understanding the world, achieving academic
excellence and succeeding in the workforce or college. The foundation for reading reaches a
critical juncture between kindergarten and third grade. That’s when children begin to acquire
the skills that enable them to find meaning in written text. One of United Way’s education focus
areas prioritizes the development of strong reading skills by the end of third grade – a phase
when employee volunteers, who become readers – can make a real difference.

n Introduce yourself and get to know your student. Find out what he likes and dislikes and what his strengths and weaknesses might be.
n Listening to your student is more important than lecturing. Be prepared to adjust the work and your style as you learn more about your student’s abilities and nature.
n Monitor your student’s understanding of the subject. Does she have the necessary skills?
n Pay attention to your student’s body language – this can tell you a great deal. Often students let you know what they are thinking and feeling in subtle ways.
HOW CAN EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEERS HELP STUDENTS SUCCEED THROUGH TUTORING?
Tutoring – instructing a child one-on-one or in small groups – has been shown to have positive
effects on academic performance and reading difficulties. The literacy and math skills that stu-
dents receive from volunteer tutors can put them on the path to high school, college and career
success. Volunteer tutors can help in two basic ways: instructional tutoring and assignment
assistance. Often, volunteer tutoring involves a combination of the two.
INSTRUCTIONAL TUTORING: Volunteer tutors can
provide instruction around a specific content area,
where students are expected to develop new knowl-
edge and become proficient in topics previously
unknown to them. Most volunteer tutors provide
instruction around reading and math.
ASSIGNMENT ASSISTANCE: Volunteer tutors can
meet with individual or small groups of students who
have difficulty completing class assignments and
support them in specific tasks.
TUTORING AND ASSIGNMENT ASSISTANCE: Volunteer tutors can support students in completing
assigned class work while helping them understand
how to learn and apply their reading skills and
existing knowledge.
n Be creative and imaginative in your tutoring methods. Look for ways to motivate and involve your student.
n No one likes to do the same thing for a long time. Break your tutoring time into nice short slots.
n People can have different styles of learning. Your student may have a visual bias or an audio bias. Adapt to your student and be prepared to change your tutoring methods.
Here are a few tips for becoming an effective volunteer tutor:

TUTORING
HOW CAN EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEERS HELP STUDENTS SUCCEED THROUGH MENTORING?
Children and youth need more than academic support to make it through school successfully.
Mentors provide emotional support that improves a child’s self-esteem and self-control. Mentors
also provide guidance and advice that many teens may be uncomfortable seeking from their parents.
Mentoring can take a number of forms and include varying goals and outcomes. Some mentoring
takes place within schools while other mentors work with students in the community. Objectives
run the gamut and may include improving academic achievement, school retention and job
preparation, substance abuse prevention and avoiding socially inappropriate behaviors.
Community-based mentoring and school-based mentoring have similar objectives around
student success, achievement and self-esteem.
With only 20% of a student’s time spent in school, out-of-school time serves as an integral part of a child’s education. Here are a few tips for becoming a successful volunteer mentor:
What we do today will ensure that the work-force of tomorrow will be ready to take on the challenges facing our nation. Through these proven ways of reaching youth, the workforce of today can help kids graduate.
n Decide how you will spend your time together.
n Be consistent and dependable. Make a commitment to maintain a steady presence in your mentee’s life.
n Don’t be put off if the relationship is fairly one-sided at first. As a mentor, you are responsible for keeping the relationship alive and part of your job is to seek your mentee’s trust and involvement. This takes time.
n Call your mentee before each meeting or appointment to confirm their attendance.
n Pay attention to your mentee’s need for fun.
n Respect your mentee’s opinions and beliefs.
n Allow your mentee to make mistakes and learn from the experience.
n Leave your personal agenda behind. Separate your own goals from those of your mentee.
n Do not focus on the negative aspects of your mentee’s life, neighborhood, or care givers — leave it alone.

MENTORING

WHO BENEFITS?WHO BENEFITS WHEN EMPLOYEES BECOME VOLUNTEER READERS, TUTORS OR MENTORS?
Despite the positive evidence that volunteers are helping students succeed, many promising
efforts remain at a smaller scale than what we need because of a gap in volunteers and other
resources. Global Corporate Leadership companies can help close the gap by supporting and
expanding employee volunteer efforts in reading, tutoring and mentoring. Win-Win is not just a
cliché; it’s a proven concept when it comes to helping students succeed by becoming a
volunteer reader, tutor or mentor.
STUDENTS BENEFIT: When United Way of Northeast
Florida involved corporate partners, education leaders
and other stakeholders in a pilot initiative for middle
schoolers called Achievers for Life, students’ academic
performance and behavior improved. Elsewhere, a
Public/Private Ventures impact study of Big Brothers
Big Sisters j.mp/PPV-Study showed that children with
mentors were less likely to skip school than those
without mentors.
EMPLOYEES BENEFIT: Employees who volunteer
through their workplace report more positive
attitudes toward their employer and their coworkers.
Further, those who volunteer are more positive about
their own physical and emotional health than non-
volunteers. It’s also a great way to develop skills.
COMPANIES BENEFIT: Top-level executives
recognize the bottom-line value of corporate citizen-
ship because it: enhances a company’s reputation
and image; is valued by customers; and helps recruit
and retain employees.
THE COMMUNITY BENEFITS: Cutting in half the
number of students who drop out of high school
would have significant economic benefits. Individuals
with at least a high school diploma earn more
throughout their lives than those who drop out.
Moreover, well-prepared high school graduates
continue their education, serve in the military or
develop workplace skills that strengthen our
economy and society.
n Encourage your employees to become volunteer
readers, tutors and mentors.
n Enable employees to volunteer on a regular basis
during work hours through policies such as
volunteer release time.
n Consider setting a recruitment goal of volunteer
readers, tutors or mentors for your company to
motivate employee volunteers and showcase your
support of education to customers.
n Make a financial investment to support United Way
in its ability to provide infrastructure, technology
and measurement tools for maximum impact
in education.
n Consider a cause marketing partnership
with United Way through the LIVE UNITED
Read Learn Succeed back to school promotion
slated to launch in 2012. To learn more see
Appendix # 5 or contact Randy Punley at
n Make a financial investment to support schools,
libraries, and community organizations where
employees volunteer through programs such
as Dollars for Doers.
n Communicate this opportunity to your employees,
clients, customers, vendors and the public.
HOW CAN GLOBAL CORPORATE LEADERSHIP COMPANIES SUPPORT THIS CALL TO ACTION?
We invite Global Corporate Leadership Companies to consider one or more of the opportunities listed below:
GET STARTED
1
2
3
HOW TO GET STARTED
Getting started is easy as 1-2-3. Encourage employee volunteers to:
6
GET COUNTED. LEARN MORE. GET TRAINED.
GET COUNTED. Employees can pledge to become volunteer readers, tutors or mentors at liveunited.org/gclvolunteer.
LEARN MORE: Employees can check out our volunteer resources to help them decide how to best volunteer their time liveunited.org/gclvolunteer. As the employer, make sure to provide sufficient release time for volunteering so that employee volunteers achieve maximum impact and their pupils spend regular time with their volunteer readers, tutors or mentors.
GET TRAINED: View the on-demand webcast orientation for volunteer readers, tutors and mentors. Find out how employee volunteers can get started making a difference in the life of a child. The webcast can be viewed at liveunited.org/orientation.
FOLLOW US. SHARE YOUR COMMITMENT. RECRUIT YOUR FRIENDS.
Share the Pledge http://j.mp/RTM-Share-FB Facebook.com/onemillionvolunteers
Tweet the Pledge http://j.mp/RTM-Share-Twtr @Live_United, #KidsWin, #UnitedWay
Employees can create lots of buzz through social media by sharing their commitment to volunteer as readers, tutors, or mentors or their reflections thus far if they are already volunteering. See Appendix # 6 for some helpful social networking tips for you and your employee volunteers.
FIND AN OPPORTUNITY. START VOLUNTEERING.
FIND AN OPPORTUNITY: By visiting liveunited.org/gclvolunteer, employees can browse through volunteer opportunities to become a volunteer reader, tutor or mentor via the “All for Good” widget such as the one shown below. Opportunities are based on the IP address or nearest cell phone tower in a 25-mile radius range from the zip code entered.
START VOLUNTEERING: Employee volunteers can contact the agency, school, or library requesting volunteers on the “All for Good” widget.
NEED EXTRA HELP? Your company’scommunity affairs manager or the employee volunteer coordinator can contact a United Way where they live or work. United Way staff can help with employee volunteer training, matching and/or background checks. Find your United Way at liveunited.org/myuw.
7
HOW TO FIND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Depending on your company’s philanthropic and community engagement strategy, employee
schedules, skills and interests, as well as the most pressing educational needs in the communities
where they live and work, many kinds of opportunities exist.
n United Way makes it easy to find opportunities
directly from liveunited.org/gclvolunteer. The
“All for Good” widget at the bottom of the page
offers volunteer opportunities nearby based on
the IP address, nearest cell phone tower or zip
code. Pre-set to 25 mile radius, the search area can
be reduced or enlarged via “change settings” link.
n United Way in your community might be able to
host an orientation for your company’s employee
volunteers and match them with a volunteer reading,
tutoring or mentoring opportunity. Community
partners of the United Way can also help train,
conduct background checks, and match employee
volunteers and with students. To find a United Way
nearby, visit liveunited.org/myuw.
n A Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) in your area
can be a great resource. ReadUP, a program of
the Central Indiana Corporate Volunteer Council,
matches employee volunteers from their member
companies with middle schools students. The
volunteers spend one hour every week (or every
other week if matched with a partner) reading,
tutoring or mentoring students. These companies
are not only giving employees release time to
volunteer with programs such as ReadUP, they are
also encouraging other companies in the area to
get involved. To find a CVC in your area, visit
j.mp/Find-CVC.
n A public library is a great place to get started and
find volunteer opportunities too. The library might
have an existing reading, tutoring or mentoring
program, or know of other local programs that
can offer volunteer opportunities to work with
students. To find a public library nearby, visit
publiclibraries.com.
n Schools can often use the help of volunteers to
support both educators and students. A local Parent-
Teacher Association (PTA) can be a great resource
to help to determine the needs of schools in your
company’s community. To find a PTA nearby, visit
j.mp/my-PTA.
n Many communities have a Big Brothers Big Sisters
(BBBS) and/or Boys & Girls Clubs of America
(BGCA) presence. Your company’s volunteers can
contact them even if they aren’t ready to become
volunteer readers, tutors or mentors. Other volunteer
initiatives that employee volunteers can participate
in also exist. To find a BBBS nearby, visit BBBS.org.
To find a BGCA nearby, visit BGCA.org.
n Volunteer from the comfort of your desk. Consider
online and virtual volunteer opportunities. For
example, In2Books provides a safe platform for
busy professionals to help early grade students
develop their reading and writing skills through
an online pen pal program. To learn more, visit
In2Books.org.
n Make it a team building opportunity. Encourage
the Employee Volunteer Council or community
affairs manager at your company to consider work-
ing with organizations that cater to groups of adult
volunteers or busy professionals. For example
Power Lunch, a signature initiative of Everybody
Wins!, is a lunchtime literacy and mentoring
program that brings groups of volunteers into low-
income elementary schools for one-on-one read
aloud sessions with students. To learn more, visit
j.mp/EW-Power-Lunch.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
HOW TO ENSURE EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEERS STAY ENGAGED AND YOUR CUSTOMERS VALUE YOUR COMPANY’S COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION
n Set a company-wide recruitment goal of
volunteer readers, tutors and mentors and
communicate your progress on a regular basis.
Remember this goal does not have to be public,
it’s up to you. Just make sure to let United Way
know your recruitment projections.
n Alternatively, set multiple goals across different
departments, office floors, or branches of your
company and engage employees in friendly
competitions to motivate each other.
n Make it official. Circulate a joint press release
from your company and United Way Worldwide.
See Appendix # 1 or download the customizable
press release from liveunited.org/gcltools.
n Ask more than once. Ask often. Or don’t ask
at all. Instead have employees ask each other
to get counted as volunteer readers, tutors or
mentors. See Appendix # 2 for a snapshot a
customizable email campaign or download the
entire document from liveunited.org/gcltools.
n A picture is worth a thousand words. Take
advantage of customizable marketing material
for web and print. See Appendix # 3 for a snap-
shot of available collateral and download them
all from liveunited.org/gcltools.
n Employee volunteers can share their
commitment to become volunteer readers,
tutors or mentors and invite friends to
participate via Facebook and Twitter just as
soon as they take click on “Count-Me-In” on
liveunited.org/gclvolunteer or later by visiting
liveunited.org/pages/thank-you-for-taking-
the-pledge.
n Once employees raise their hand and commit to
help students succeed by becoming volunteer
readers, tutors or mentors, help them find an
opportunity, educate them why it’s important
that they volunteer, tell them why your company
cares, and how students who graduate improve
their lives and lives of others in your community.
In other words guide them on their volunteer
reading, tutoring or mentoring journey. See
Appendix # 4 for a snapshot of a customizable
email campaign or download the entire
document from liveunited.org/gcltools.
n Leverage social networking to showcase your
company’s commitment to corporate citizenship
and keep employee volunteers engaged by mak-
ing it easy for them to share their commitments,
thoughts, and experiences via their own social
networking channels or your company’s intranet
tools. See Appendix # 6 for a social networking
toolkit that includes sample Facebook and
Twitter posts that will allow you to make the
most out of social networking. Alternatively
you can download this toolkit from
liveunited.org/gcltools.
n Reward employee volunteers as they reach
important milestones such as 3 months,
6 months, a year or more of volunteering as
a reader, tutor or mentor.
n Encourage employees to share their volunteer
stories by visiting the “Share your Story” tab
on liveunited.org/gclvolunteer. This option is a
great opportunity for those who do not enjoy
social networking and/or would like to offer
a more substantial account of their
volunteering experience.

Today, fewer Americans are likely to earn a diploma than their parents, a distinction not shared by
any other industrialized country. Research concludes that the solution will require greater community
involvement. As a result, United Way has launched an ambitious goal to recruit and mobilize one million
volunteer readers, tutors and mentors.
The following pages are designed to guide Global Corporate Leadership companies – in particular
community affairs managers and/or employee volunteer coordinators – in realizing and achieving the
benefits of engagement through social media by rallying to help kids succeed.
If leadership of your company is a little wary of allowing access to social media to employees, you’re
not alone. You are, however, missing out on an opportunity to strengthen employee commitment to
volunteering, workplace loyalty, and teamwork. Based on a 2010 study by the Pew Research Center,
people who are involved in social media and other online groups are significantly more likely to be
involved in offline groups, especially voluntary activities. According to the study, the open and social
nature of the online tools facilitates mobilization of individuals offline. Introducing social media to
your employee volunteer program would energize them to participate. You can find this study at
j.mp/Pew-Study.
Employees can create lots of buzz through social media by sharing their commitment to volunteer as
readers, tutors or mentors or their reflections thus far if they are already volunteering. Employees can
also invite their co-workers, friends and families to LIVE UNITED and take the pledge via their personal
social media channels or the company’s intranet. Ultimately, that’s great news, not just for students
at risk of dropping out, but for your company too. Here’s how:
Engaged employee volunteers = Engaged employeesEngaged employees = More interest in company sponsored volunteeringEmployees interacting with colleagues via social media = More offline interaction among colleagues offline
Community affairs managers and/or employee volunteer coordinators can create lots of buzz too by sharing
the company’s commitment to communities in which it operates and by showcasing and recognizing their
employee volunteers for their efforts. Once more, that’s great news for at-risk students in your community
and your company.
More employees volunteering = Better employee volunteer programStrategic impact oriented goal = Increased legitimacy in the eyes of employees, customers and partnersOngoing and regular opportunities to volunteer = Real impact in the community
APPENDIX 6: SOCIAL NETWORKING TOOLKIT
Leverage social networking to showcase your company’s commitment to corporate citizenship and keep employee volunteers engaged. Download the Social Networking Toolkit from liveunited.org/gcltools.
TIPS FOR TWITTER
Twitter is an ideal vehicle for distributing shorter media (relative to Facebook or Blogs). Likewise, an intranet
microblogging tool such as Yammer or SocialText as well as Twitter for enterprise can provide similar benefits.
Learn more about MicroBlogs providers for business via:
n Dion Hinchcliffe’s “Twitter on your Intranet: 17 Microblogging Tools for Business” j.mp/MicroBlogs
n Roy Lachica’s “Using Twitter for your Intranet” j.mp/Tw4intranets
It is recommended that your Tweets & MicroBlogs follow a similar messaging architecture to your company’s
Facebook posts. Use both as an opportunity to link your audiences directly to liveunited.org/gclvolunteer.

WHAT’S IN A TWITTER HASH TAG?
Remember the good old chat rooms of the early ’90s when the Internet was just becoming popular?
Fast forward 15-20 years and think of Twitter hash tags as the chat rooms of today. For instance, to make
your tweets more memorable and capable of reaching ever wider audiences of Twitter users who care
about improving education in America, use one or more of the hash tags listed below.
Signature hash tag for the one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors initiative.
Signature hash tag for all United Way related tweets.
Signature hash tag commonly used by the larger community of organizations improving education in America.
Signature hash tag commonly used by anyone who is concerned with the magnitude of high school dropout rates.
Other good to know education, volunteering and workplace volunteering thematic hash tags include:
EDUCATION:
#AcAdv = academic advancement #EarlyEd = early age education #EdReform = education reform #edu = education #K12 = kindergarten through 12th grade education #HS = high school #Lit = literature #STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Math

CAN YOU SAY IT ALL IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS?
It is no coincidence that Twitter and other similar tools are so often described as MicroBlogs. Twitter
imposes a strict limit on the number of characters (including spaces) allotted for each Tweet. The origin of
the 140-character limit is rooted in Twitter’s initial and continuing popularity among mobile-messaging
enthusiasts. And since the standard length of a text message is 160 characters, the founders of Twitter
settled on the 140-character limit to allow up to 20 characters for the Tweet’s author’s username (known
as “Twitter Handle” in the emerging language of Twitter). Below you’ll find a few proven techniques to keep
your tweets within the 140-character limit:
n Acronyms are the best friend of any seasoned or beginner Tweeter (a person who tweets). Below you’ll find a sample of common Twitter acronyms, many quite useful when discussing education, volunteering or activism.
n Another way to make the most use of the limited character count, try eliminating spaces between words but capitalizing each new word to make it more legible and easier on the eye. For example try writing “OurCompany” instead of “our company”.
n Many third-party interfaces for Twitter, such as TweetDeck or HootSuite, include features that will shorten a tweet with a single click or allow for more than 140 characters by posting the first 80+ characters of a tweet followed by a custom link, which will display your entire tweet, when selected.
n Links are some of the most common culprits of over-the-limit tweets. Thankfully there are several free link shortening services available online. We recommend Bit.Ly & J.Mp – BitLy.com or Tiny URL – TinyUrl.com. It is common knowledge that all web links begin with “http://”, therefore it is not necessary to include it when typing a link into a browser. The opposite is true for Twitter. All links typed into Twitter must be preceded by “http://”. For example, if you type “http://LiveUnited.org” into a tweet, it will appear as a hyperlink that users can click on. But if you only write “LiveUnited.org” it will NOT become a clickable link.

TIPS FOR FACEBOOK
Whether your company has an organization-wide Facebook Page and/or one dedicated to your company’s
workplace volunteering program, you can create buzz and excitement around volunteer readers, tutors or
mentors and encourage your employees to do the same through their own Facebook profiles.
facebook.com/onemillionvolunteers
Make sure your company encourages employee volunteers to LIKE the One Million Volunteer Readers,
Tutors and Mentors Facebook Page. Doing so will allow employees to connect with other volunteer readers,
tutors or mentors and tag the page in their own Facebook posts. For example, typing “@” followed by the
first few characters of the page’s name will bring up a drop-down list of suggested pages. One of them will
be the One Million Volunteer Readers, Tutors and Mentors Facebook Page. Don’t forget, you can also tag
Facebook pages from your company’s page on Facebook.
IDEAS FOR FACEBOOK SHARING AND CONTENT
Facebook is an ideal vehicle for distributing longer posts (relative to Twitter) and embedded media.
Use Facebook as an opportunity to link users directly to liveunited.org/gclvolunteer.
