In Pslam 75 David paints us a picture through the inspiration of of the Holy Spirit of an awful cup of foaming wine. This foaming cup is held in the hand of God Himself, which he pours out on the wicked of the world. It is a symbol of his wrath. It is his righteous Judgment that has been well prepared for those who deserve it. And who deserves it? “God looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all fallen away, together they have become corrupt. There is none who does good, not even one.” (Psalm 53:2-3) The answer is clear. I do. You do. David did. Everyone fell under that snare. In Psalm 116:13 David speaks of drinking the cup of salvation. This act of worship David boasts about lifting it up to God and shouting his praise. I wonder if he understood that the cup of salvation is only available to him because one day, long after he died, a Man in a garden would sweat drops of blood, and cry out to the same God, and ask that He not be forced to drink the cup that had been placed before Him. David would be spared his share of the cup of wrath, because one day, another would drink it for him. It is good for us to remember that we would all be forced to drink that same foaming cup if Christ had not drank our share for us. Of course you can opt out. You can give yourself over to sin, to complaining, and bitterness and vengeance, and malice and whatever else your heart desires. You can stand, so sure of your good works, and demand to be judged according to your actions. And you can pass up the cup of life, the cup of salvation, for your share of the Judgment, if you so choose. The choice and its consequences are eternally yours.

In Pslam 75 David paints us a picture through the inspiration of of the Holy Spirit of an

awful cup of foaming wine. This foaming cup is held in the hand of God Himself, which

he pours out on the wicked of the world. It is a symbol of his wrath. It is his righteous

Judgment that has been well prepared for those who deserve it. And who deserves it?

“God looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who

understand, who seek after God. They have all fallen away, together they have

become corrupt. There is none who does good, not even one.” (Psalm 53:2-3) The

answer is clear. I do. You do. David did. Everyone fell under that snare.

In Psalm 116:13 David speaks of drinking the cup of salvation. This act of worship

David boasts about lifting it up to God and shouting his praise. I wonder if he

understood that the cup of salvation is only available to him because one day, long

after he died, a Man in a garden would sweat drops of blood, and cry out to the same

God, and ask that He not be forced to drink the cup that had been placed before Him.

David would be spared his share of the cup of wrath, because one day, another would

drink it for him.

It is good for us to remember that we would all be forced to drink that same foaming

cup if Christ had not drank our share for us. Of course you can opt out. You can give

yourself over to sin, to complaining, and bitterness and vengeance, and malice and

whatever else your heart desires. You can stand, so sure of your good works, and

demand to be judged according to your actions. And you can pass up the cup of life,

the cup of salvation, for your share of the Judgment, if you so choose. The choice and

its consequences are eternally yours.
