LAWYER (REQUIREMENTS)

Aspiring lawyers must complete law school. Applying to law school requires graduating from a bachelor's degree program and, in nearly all cases, taking the Law School Admission Test (LSAT).

Applicants wanting to specialize in a particular field of law may consider an undergraduate degree in that field.

While no particular field of study is required for applying to law school, aspiring lawyers should hone their reading, speaking and argumentation skills while in college.

Courses in political science and English may help students advance these skills and provide a medium for presenting facts and arguing positions.

Students may also use these classes to strengthen critical thinking skills and prepare for the LSAT.

Law school students typically study for three years and earn a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree upon successful completion of their degree program. There is no mandated or standardized curriculum, but most law schools provide a comprehensive overview of the field, with courses from civil procedure to property law. Students learn legal writing and are taught to conduct research in legal libraries and online.

After earning a J.D. degree, law school graduates must take and pass the bar exam for the state or U.S. territory in which they plan to practice. Depending on the jurisdiction, the bar exam may consist of several different tests, such as the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE). Most jurisdictions also test applicants on their knowledge of appropriate professional conduct.

POPULATION && DRESS AS A LAWYERPopulation In WorkforceDemographic information also informs us that about 75% work in the private sector. The greatest number of lawyers work in their own firm, about 48% with no partners. Others are most likely to work in either a small firm of two to five members, or a very large firm of over 100. About 28% either work in a small, or very large firm.

However, firms that employ over 100 lawyers represent only 1% of the type of law firms in the US. Most firms, about 78%, have between two to five attorneys. Few work for the government or as public defenders: about 8% are employed by the government, and less than 1% work as public defenders. Approximately 3% work as judges.

California and New York each have over 100,000 lawyers representing the two states with the highest numbers of employed attorneys. Illinois has the third highest number of employed attorneys, over 60,000. The District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Florida and Pennsylvania currently have over 40,000 in each area.

Dress For interviews, court appearances, client meetings, presentations and related events, stick to a well-cut suit in conservative shades such as black, brown, gray or navy. Skirted suits were formerly the rule but now pantsuits are acceptable. Skirts should fall at or below the knee.

For less formal business events and casual work days, pantsuits and dressy coordinated separates are acceptable. Tailored jackets, tasteful sweaters and pretty blouses paired with a skirt or dress pants are always good choices. Other acceptable clothing for women includes sweaters (lightweight, turtlenecks, crew, V-neck and cardigans), vests (worn with short or long-sleeved shirts), knit tops, collared polo shirts and pants, including khakis, linen blends, silk or twills.

Unacceptable Work Clothing for Women :There are certain garments that you should not wear to work or any business event and are forbidden by most law firm dress code policies. These include tight, sheer and low-cut clothing of any style, sweatshirts, t-shirts, denim of any type or color, spaghetti straps, open backs, midriff, tank tops, halter tops, stretch pants, stirrup pants, jogging or warm up suits, jeans of any color or style, casual shorts, dress shorts, miniskirts and Capri pants that end close to the knee. Also avoid neon colors, tight-fitting clothing and low-cut blouses, especially anything that shows cleavage.

Shoes: For formal business events, closed-toe heels or dress shoes in conservative colors (black, brown, gray, tan, almond) with hosiery essential. The shoes should be in good condition. For casual business attire, acceptable footwear includes thin to medium sole leather shoes, loafers, any updated style with a low or stacked heel and open-toed or dress sandals.

Avoid: Athletic shoes, thongs, moccasins, flip-flops, platform heels and footwear that is worn or in poor condition.

FACTS ABOUT JOB

The first lawyers in history weren’t actually lawyers. In ancient Greece, the earliest attorneys were actually orators who became advocates for people. They most wrote speeches for litigants and occasionally stood up before juries as witnesses for them.

oAn attorney can sometimes have your case dismissed without even going to court. In fact, attorneys do not always have to go to court to have a case concluded. Transactional attorneys and others can make it so that your case never sees the light of day and you needn’t step into a courtroom.

An attorney cannot become an attorney unless he or she passes a strict code of ethics test. In fact, all lawyers must pass this Model Rules of Professional Conduct test, which means that attorneys are held to the highest possible standards and practices, ensuring you get proper representation and legal protection.

Attorneys cannot disclose the details of your case with anyone except you, even if you confess to a crime. This means that your attorney-client privilege is guaranteed and as such you can be as honest with your lawyer as possible. Such honesty will help your lawyer better represent you.
