One of the most beautiful rivers in allthe world is the Columbia River, whichforms the boundary, for the most part, be-tween Oregon and Washington. Discov-ered in May, 1792 by an American traderand sea captain, Robert Cray of Boston,it was named by him after his ship the"Columbia," the first vessel to anchor inits inland waters.
The Milwaukee Road-Union Pacifictrains skirt the Columbia River for overtwo hundred miles. Through the verdantColumbia River Valley you travel past thefoot of sheer walls one moment; next thesweeping breast of the river lies before you.Mile after mile your train threads alongthe river, now in the shadows of soaringcliffs, then past garden-like islands, foam-ing cataracts and waterfalls.
The history and development of the en-tire Pacific Northwest has been closelylinked with this sometimes calm, sometimesangry waterway. However, the last chapterin this story has not been written, for themighty Columbia will continue downthrough the ages to exert a powerful in-fluence on the welfare of the territory itdrains.
