Shop Tips Special Interest Group -

We had another very informative meeting in a very warm shop. (The late summer heat would feel good about fourmonths from now). I demonstrated "How to level a large round uneven surfaced object" using a frame (around theobject) and a router on a sled. I also demonstrated a band saw technique on "How to make wedges" of which I usedto secure the object inside the frame.

I also demonstrated the Keller dovetail jig at the request of an attending member. The group got into a gooddiscussion about sharpening and would like to see a sharpening demo in future meetings using water stones.

There will NOT be a meeting for the month of December! January 7th @ 7pm in John Summers' shop, 1672Clayton Way, Concord. I hope to see you then and don't forget your hearing protection.

Turning Special Interest Group – Meetings in room 207 at the PHEC at 7pm the first Thursday of eachmonth. To join in the Turning SIG call George Lucido at 925-254-3659. The meetings schedule is as follows:

Dec. 7, 2006 - George Lucido will demonstrate how to make a wooden pen on a mandrel, this demonstration willshow all the steps in creating a pen including cutting the blank, drilling, installation of the brass inserts, turning thewooden pen bodies and assembly of the components.

Jan 2007 - Andrew Baxter will continue with spindle wok this time demonstrating how to make semi-fancy candleholders, you will learn how to form a bead and how to make a cove using the “Baxtermethod”.

Feb. 2007- February will be the beginning of several months of demonstrations on making wooden bowls. BillTarleton will discuss how to cut a log to achieve the proper blank for making a bowl and will demonstrate how to turna “green bowl” blank and how to prepare the blank for proper drying and will finish up by turning a finished bowl.

Mar. 2007- This evening will be dedicated to how to make a “natural edge” bowl. This is different approach thanmaking a standard bowl and will be demonstrated byTBD.

April 2007- Jim Rodgers will demonstrate how to make a solid body bowl while incorporating a simple segmentedring. Jim has a lot of experience in this type of bowl and vessel making and has many of his pieces in galleries.

May 2007- Andrew Baxter will be back to demonstrate how to make a wooden goblet. This demonstration shows adifferent approach to turning and incorporates “end grain” turning.

June 2007- Bill Tarleton will demonstrate how to make hollow vessels –those are the slim pots with a small hole thatmakes it impossible to turn the inside -BUT, using Bill’s method he will show how it is done.

July 2007- Vessel design. Jim Rodgers will lead a discussion on how to approach the perpetual problem of how todesign your bowl or vessel, whether a salad bowl or a fancy segmented vessel -design is of prime concern.

Aug 2007- George Lucido will demonstrate how to get started making segmented vessels, This demonstration willinclude making a drawing, calculating the sizes required and how to cut and glue the segments.

Sept 2007- Jim Rodgers will continue with the necessary steps on how to do the assembly and finish turning of asegmented vessel.

Oct 2007- Sharpening your lathe tools including spindle gouges, scrapers, skews, and bowl gouges. TBD

Nov 2007- Bowl enhancement including how to fill cracks, use of color mixed with epoxy, use of Turquoise, etc.TBD

Dec 2007- Bill Tarleton will demonstrate how to turn a bowl which is bigger than the swing on the lathe. This is doneoff the end of the lathe using an auxiliary tool rest. This can’t be done on all lathes but is a good method to learn forthose of us that want to make a 24” Cesar salad bowl.

6

Jan 2008 - Andrew Baxter will demonstrate how to do “off-center” turning. Using this method some very interestingshapes will evolve.
