Volume 5 – Issue 1 Message from the Executive Director Jean-Pierre Beaulieu One third of our budget is dedicated to our introduction and recreation initiatives

Our actions are inspired by our slogan – Initiate passions, build dreams – and successfully contribute to promote participation in the game of golf with initiatives conducted towards golfers of all skills levels in such manner that they will enjoy rewarding experiences and reach their full potential. The 2017 golf season is quite promising and builds on our 2016 achievements.

The Golf Québec team takes a leadership role and is proud to promote and develop the game of golf. Our initiatives are mostly focused on introduction, recreation, competitive tours, and athletic development of our youth.

Teaching the FUNdamentals of golf is one of our key priorities The 2016 golf season was quite noteworthy. A new 30-second ad promoting golf towards a younger clientele was aired by many television channels. Through our fundraising campaign, including the annual Fundraiser Tournament, over $100,000 was collected to support our development programs.

More than a third of our annual budget is invested in our introduction and recreation initiatives. We can be proud of our 2016 success stories: • The Golf in Schools program is now found in

524 elementary schools and 72 high schools. • Over 125 in-school visits by golf

professionals and Future Links Field Trips. • 12 certified Junior Golf Development

Centres. • 38 clubs offering the First Drive program

which facilitates access to the course for children and families.

• 25 Golf Fore the Cure events contributed to raising $57,462 to fight cancer.

• Numerous women’s clinics and social tournaments.

• Training of new Golf Community Coaches.

Introduce a child to the game and get a new golf partner for the rest of your life

Our young athletes, who also contribute to promoting golf through their activities, have done their province proud. Hugo Bernard was the first Québec golfer to win the Canadian Amateur Men’s

Championship since 1998. At the Canadian Amateur Women’s

Championship, Valérie Tanguay, Josée Doyon, and Katherine Gravel Coursol captured the first inter-provincial title for Québec since 2003.

On the LPGA Tour, Maude-Aimée LeBlanc and Anne-Catherine Tanguay, as well as Brooke Henderson have reached an unparalleled level of performance.

In 2017, Golf Québec will pursue its initiatives to support the development of golf and contribute to the economic well-being of the industry at large. This cannot be achieved without the active participation of golf facilities and players. In the coming months, you will be challenged by our communication campaign promoting the game of golf. More dynamic, stimulating, and focusing on accessibility, it will make you feel like playing. In 2017, the best way to support golf development is simply to visit a golf club more often. As suggested by our new promotional theme: Get Out, Play Golf!

Golf-études Golf-études: the perfect match

The Golf Québec Golf-études program is available in close to twenty high schools and colleges. It provides the perfect match for students-athletes who wish to reach the highest academic and golf performances. A springboard for excellence, this program provides young golfers with great harmonization of their daily schedule to avoid excessive workloads while promoting their athletic and personal development.

http://www.golfquebec.org/en/pages.asp?id=221  Recognized by the Ministère de l'Éducation, de l’Enseignement supérieur (MEES), the Golf Québec Golf-études program offers structured and personalized training sessions featuring state-of-the-art technic. Our coaches, certified by the Coaching Association of Canada and PGA of Canada, provide daily supervision to students-athletes based on a precise and adapted training plan.

In 2016, a Golf-études training camp was presented in North Carolina by Golf Québec A five-event school tour Moreover, the program includes a school tour comprised of five 36-hole tournaments which are strategically scheduled throughout the school calendar. These tournaments are used to validate the accuracy and efficiency of each athlete’s development. They also provide a controlled

competitive environment where it is easy to learn the rules of golf and test the players’ abilities to make the right decisions in a game situation.

The Golf Québec Golf-études program, a great way to play golf year-round Other services Students-athletes who are registered in this program benefit from close academic supervision as well as numerous peripheral services such as sports psychology, nutrition, physiotherapy, etc. From a parenting point of view, athletes identified by Golf Québec get support for their transportation and pension grants are also provided by the government. For more information… To learn more about the Golf Québec Golf-études program, contact Martine Laparé, High Performance Manager at the Québec Golf Federation: [email protected] (514 831-2802) or visit www.golfquebec.org. Information on the 2017-2018 school year will be published by March 15. It is possible to play golf year-round, even in Québec!

Junior Development Building golf communities, together

Everywhere, in the province, club managers are aware that they must renew their business offer to grow their own industry. For many, this revitalization depends on a family policy and younger vision. Golf Québec can only commend and applaud this new approach.

What if the solution to this issue also was a stronger commitment to build golf communities? For instance, in the area of Barrie, Ontario, golf clubs have challenged one another to actually team up and share their human and material resources to visit schools, develop new junior golfers, and reach out to the next generation. Their new priority is focused on children and women. Québec takes a step further In Québec, we went one step further by creating links between a club, a city, a few schools, and generous donors. Last year, at La Vallée du Richelieu, twenty members joined forces to donate $10,000, support the “From School to the Golf Club” fundraiser, and contribute in an active way to promoting golf towards children of the Ste-Julie area. The initial idea of supporting the Golf Québec fundraiser was instilled by Stéphane Dubé, past President and now Governor of La Vallée du Richelieu. “Through our meetings, I quickly understood the impact that such a partnership between our club and Golf Québec could have in the region and on the golf industry as a whole. By gathering the city of Ste-Julie, our local schools, and donors, we brought together a group of shareholders who share the same vision and common goals: incite our children to be more active through sports. Together, we can promote the introduction of children to the game of golf and

facilitate their transition from school to the golf club, no matter where they come from.”

A donation of $10,000 will have a great impact on the introduction of children to golf in the Ste-Julie area Donations collected through this initiative were used to: 1. support the visit of golf professionals in local

schools 2. conduct activities of the Future Links program 3. train new Community Golf Coaches 4. as well as participate in the municipal family

activities. Through this opportunity, the golf club contributed to developing new golfers for the benefit of the whole industry rather than for its own facilities. As a result, junior golf development, at the local and regional scales, is now supported by individual and corporate donors. Junior Development Get more with First Drive

Striving to provide more opportunities inciting children to discover the game, in 2017, Golf Québec will be promoting the First Drive furthermore towards clubs and the golfing community.

38 golfing facilities are currently participating in this initiative designed to help parents identify where their children of 7 to 12 years old could play. The First Drive courses are adapted to junior needs, which facilitates their participation and makes them eager to come back. With their adapted yardage, these golf clubs feature shorter 9-hole courses with specially identified First Drive tees. For instance, a par 3 hole would be approximately 100-yard long, while a par 4 would not exceed 200 yards and a par 5 would be around 250 yards. As a result, children can learn to play golf and have fun on easier courses.

Let’s facilitate access to our golf clubs for junior players Even more interesting, children play FOR FREE when accompanied by an adult who pays his own green fee. Some restrictions may apply depending on each club.

An adapted scorecard and poster can also be printed from the Golf Québec website in the First Drive section. For children… and adults too Ironically, even if this program was initially designed for children, its shorter yardage is quite appealing for older golfers too. As a matter of fact, many are looking for yardage adapted to their personal skills and that enables them to play faster. At the dawn of a new season, Golf Québec wishes for more golf clubs to commit to this program as it would translate into increased attendance of young golfers on our provincial courses.

http://www.golfquebec.org/en/pages.asp?id=267 The development of new participants is one of Golf Québec’s top priorities. We are convinced that our Sport Development programs have direct impact on the future of the golf industry. First Drive is one of our numerous junior development programs including: Future Links driven by Acura, Golf in Schools, Golfmobile, and the Junior Golf Development Centres. 2017 Competitions Registrations have begun for a very exciting 2017 competitive season

Golf Québec is proud to team up with the golf clubs that will be hosts to the events composing its provincial tours. These splendid courses will contribute to showcasing our Québec golf talents.

Québec Golf Hall of Fame Robert Vokey to be inducted into Québec Golf Hall of Fame

Born in Montréal and raised in Verdun, Québec, Vokey has become one of the world’s foremost wedge designers and trusted short game advisor to many of the modern game’s greatest golfers. Golf Québec is proud to announce that the legendary golf club maker has been elected as a 2017 inductee.

Over his illustrious career, Vokey, 77, has designed wedges for many of golf’s notable players including Seve Ballesteros, Lee Trevino, Bernhard Langer, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Davis Love III, Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott, Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, as well as Masters champion Mike Weir, Graham DeLaet and Ian Leggatt. "What an honour to be recognized by the Québec Hall of Fame," said Vokey. "I never imagined in all my years that this great honour would come my way. It's incredibly humbling to be honoured with so many great golfers and contributors to the game of golf in Québec and Canada."

Robert “Bob” Vokey with our Executive Director, Jean-Pierre Beaulieu, and Golf Québec President of 2014-2016, Marcel Paul Raymond An exceptional contribution While his career in golf equipment design has also touched on iron and metal wood technology, his most influential impact on the sport has come

through Vokey Design wedges which continue to be trusted by many of the game’s great players and are best sellers among golfers of all skill levels. Although the commercial success of the Vokey franchise is exceptional, his innovation and passion to help golfers of all ability get more enjoyment from their golf experiences are a hallmark for his contributions to the sport.

“While he is tremendously proud of his Québec roots, Bob Vokey’s impact on the game of golf globally has been simply outstanding,” said Diane Dunlop-Hébert, Chair of the Québec Golf Hall of Fame. “The Vokey name is synonymous with craftsmanship and in the modern history of club design, there is arguably no single club designer trusted by so many of the game’s finest players. He has had an incredible impact on the game of golf globally and is a deserving inductee into the Québec Golf Hall of Fame.” http://www.golfquebec.org/en/pages.asp?id=16
