Last weeks Results: NEAFL - BMFC 13.7.85 were defeated by Ainslie 12.19.91 The cock of the North trophy was once again up for grabs as arch rivals Ainslie and Belconnen battled it out at the Magpies first home game of the year at Manuka oval. The pre-game speech from club stalwart Scott Reid had the boys fired up and the Magpies came out ready to contest the footy and Ainslie weren’t backing down. The first term saw in-form midfielder Matthew Sharp finding a lot of the ball and hitting up Shane Harris who was as dangerous as ever down forward. The footy was hot and the game was looking like it would be a great battle with Belconnen leading 2 points at the first break. The old cliché of “you have to play four quarters” has been haunting the Magpies lately with small lapses in concentration allowing teams to kick away. Unfortunately there was a 15 minute gap in this quarter where Ainslie were first to the footy and as a result getting more supply to keep our undersized backline under fire. Battled and bruised Mal Douglas fought well down back and was supported well by Scott Henning and the round 5 rising star Chris Jansen who is playing fantastic football for a 16 year old. The tri-colours opened up a handy lead going into the main break and led the Magpies by 25 points. The third term was a big positive for the Magpies as they clawed their way back into the game. Cameron Campbell was doing a great defensive role on Nick Paine while the likes of Sharp, Ryan Turnbull and Sam Rutland were winning the contested ball. Brendan Dess had his second big shut down role in as many weeks on Marcus Crook and to quote president Daryl Read “Crook won’t need a shower after the game as Dess has given him a bath” shows that Dess did a stellar job. Lead up forward Matt Hammond returned from injury and was presenting well and the deep forwards of Harris and coach Matt Lokan saw the boys kick 5 goals to 2 in the quarter and be within 10 points heading into the final term. The rivalry lived up to its reputation in the last quarter with the contests all over the ground being very physical with both teams showing intent to win the game. Ainslie kicked the first two of the quarter and looked like they would run away with it however the Magpies weren’t going down without a fight. Some great forward pressure from Dom Bunyan and first use from the centre saw the boys get the margin back to one single point with 3 minutes to play. As has been the case this year so far though, the fairy-tale wasn’t to be with Ainslie kicking a sealer and winning by 6 points. These two teams meet once more this year and it is set to be a ripper game with Belconnen wanting revenge. Best players for the day were Sharp, Campbell, Dess, Hammond, Jansen and Turnbull. Goal kickers were: Harris 5, Bunyan 2, Lokan 2, Dess 2, Nick Collins 1, Hammond 1. Division 1 - BMFC 22.10.142 defeated Tuggeranong 11.5.71 It was back to Greenway oval for the Belconnen Div 1 side on Sunday to take on the Tuggeranong Hawks. The Div 1 side were attempting to extend their unbeaten start to the season to 5 games, and after a scare in the second quarter came away with a pleasing 12 goal win. Belconnen started the game kicking to the city end and were aided by a strong breeze. The boys used the advantage well and were able to convert some strong midfield play into 5 first quarter goals. Justin Hodder was providing a lot of drive in the middle and Daniel Posch was proving to be a very big target up forward, kicking 2 first quarter goals. Dom Duncan took on all comers on the wing, cutting a scythe through the Hawks midfield and helping Belconnen to dominate the first quarter. To the Tuggeranong Hawks credit they pushed well into the wind and were able to kick two goals into the breeze. Some inaccurate kicking in front of goals meant that Belconnen went to the break leading 5 goals 4 behinds to 2 goals straight. The misses late in the quarter, and losing Daniel Posch for the game to a knee injury, were to prove costly as the Hawks came out firing in the second quarter. The Hawks midfield got on top and they were using the breeze well to get the ball into their forwards very quickly. Despite some resolute defence from Jarrod Hill, and some early touches for first gamer Rhys Healy, the Hawks quickly closed the gap, kicking 4 unanswered goals. Some clever forward play from Adam McDonald and strong marking from Reuben Towill helped Belconnen to stem the flow, resulting in two late goals and a 15 point lead to Belconnen at half time. The Belconnen team came out after half time determined to use the ball more effectively and move it quickly into their forward line. These half time resolutions appeared, at first, to amount to little as the Hawks kicked the first goal of the quarter, into the wind. But from then on it was all Belconnen. With Jordy Pearson running rampant in the forward fifty, strong marking from Logan Austin, first class crumbing from Stephen Miekle and clever midfield play from Chris Calvert, Andrew Gatenby and Joss Whitford, Belconnen piled on 9 unanswered goals, taking the game out of the Hawks reach. The last quarter began with Tuggeranong facing a 65 point deficit, which was not helped at all by Belconnen kicking the first goal of the term. Belconnen had clearly steeled themselves for the last quarter, with the midfield playing much tighter and the miserly back 6, led by Kieran Ferns and Whits, and ably supported by Mitch Mooney, cutting of every Tuggeranong forward entry. A highlight of the game came in the middle of the quarter when irregular goal sneak, Kieran Ferns, snuck forward to kick his first goal of the season. When the final siren sounded the Belconnen boys had extended their lead to run out eventual winners .

Division 2 - BMFC 12.8.80 defeated Harman 10.9 .69 Belconnen showed up for their first Sunday game of the season to a sunny day at RMC oval expecting a tough hit out against the reigning premiers from the previous season. As was expected the game was physical right from the beginning with the contests around the stoppages in the midfield requiring the like of Michael Coate, Kris Archibald and Mark Braybrook to simply get the ball on the boot and get it forward early. The magpies were able to dominate the football for most of the 1st quarter however they found it tough moving forward with a determined Harman backline continually preventing them from scoring a major, the pies went in to the first change only a head by 10 points despite their early dominance as they were unable to capitalise on their early opportunities. Harman fought their way back into the game in the second term outscoring the magpies who managed to hold on through some bitter defence lead by Vineel Dutt and Sam Danaher to go to half time still a head by just 2 points. The third quarter again featured a fast start from Belconnen who manage to score some quick goals through Luke Rhodes and Ian Andrews however once again Harman found a way back into the game with a late burst of scoring going into the final break just 1 goal behind the Magpies. The last quarter was another seesawing 25 minutes this time with Harman taking the advantage as things became more physical, finally taking the lead from Belconnen after trailing all game and even managing to go ahead by 7 points. Belconnen would not go quietly however and 2 quick goals saw them back in front and after Tom Davey kicked true running into an open goal the game was sealed. The magpies running out 11 point winners. Division 3 - BMFC 14.8.92 defeated Harman 9.4.58 The BMFC Division 3 took on Harman Hogs in Round 3. Due to the Navy cracking down on civilians entering their base, Harman now have to play their home games at RMC Oval. The oval had not been mown and was full of potholes but that was not going to be an excuse the Magpies would wear. The day marked to debut of Matt Irons, James McLellan and Rob Withers to the club. It also saw Gav McKinnon, Elliot Duncan and Michael Cain make their return this year. Harman were expected to be another tough game but after last week the Magpies were quietly confident. The Magpies came out firing with a goal in the first couple of minutes to Mitch Simpson and this set the scene for the day. Not even injuries to key players in Paul Netting and Ben Langham seem to slow the Magpies down. The Magpies discipline was once again a highlight and their pressure around the ground was unrelenting. Harman fought back a number of times during the game but couldn't get any closer than two goals all game. The Magpies never seem to be threaten at any stage and always had the game in control. A good third quarter performance lead by Foster, Knight and Markham and with two quick goals to Blackburn and Irons in the last all but destroyed the Hogs spirit. The Magpies lead at every change and finished off strong to run out comfortable winners. Nathan Blackburn had a breakout game on the wing, while Gav McKinnon and Troy Levier were true soldiers in the midfield. Puddles seem to relish the new challenge as the backup ruckman, while Andrew Knight, Mick Heather and Tim Bruen were awesome down back. Michael Talevich and Mitch Simpson always seem to able to finish off when it counted. Magpies by 34 points. Goals: 4: Talevich 2: Irons, Levier, Simpson 1: Blackburn, Doolan Markham, McKinnon. Best: Blackburn, McKinnon, Knight, Levier, Talevich, Foster. Women’s - BMFC

Last weeks Results:

NEAFL - BMFC 21.8.134 defeated Sydney University 6.7.43 The Belconnen Magpies hosted Sydney Uni at a wet and cold Manuka oval on Saturday and were very determined to win and win convincingly to launch a second half of the season attack on a finals berth. The theme for the two weeks leading up to this game was contested football and the side welcomed back Andrew Dess and Ben McDonald from injury and also Chris Calvert, captain John Love and Dom Bunyan came back into the side. From the opening bounce it was clear the Magpies were keen to put their heads over the football and work for each other to get the desired result. The first quarter saw the Magpies leading by 3 goals after some very accurate kicking considering the shocking conditions. The second quarter saw the Magpies up the ante once again and led by hard nuts Scott Henning and Brendan Dess in the middle of the ground, were winning the contested ball much to coach Matt Lokan’s delight. The forward line structure that promised so much in the pre-season was finally out on the paddock together with tall options Andrew Dess and Matt Hammond a.k.a. the twin towers working well together and allowing club leading goal kicker Shane Harris room to run riot deep in attack. Add to that forward pressure from Bunyan and Adam McDonald and Lokan’s strong marking and things were looking bleak for the Uni team. A seven goal to two quarter saw the Magpies take a 49 point lead into the main break. The dominance continued in the third quarter and it was evident that the Pies were determined to put in their first four quarter effort for the year and did not take their foot off the gas at all. Matt Porter played one of his best games for the year despite conditions suited to smaller players and Ryan Turnbull and recruit Josh Hegarty were both having an absolute field day. All 23 players were contributing and playing their roles with discipline and composure which must have made the coaching staff happy as they watched their structures finally paying off. The margin had opened up to an insurmountable 69 points and was just a matter of whether the Magpies would continue to dominate or take their foot off the gas. The four quarter effort was completed in the final term with the Magpies kicking another 5 goals to Sydney Uni’s one and finishing off a very accurate and effective day in front of goal considering the conditions. Shane Harris led all players with six goals and was well supported by A.Dess, Hammond and Turnbull who all kicked three. The competitive football was the highlight of the day and showed the Magpies players that they have the ability to run away with games, a valuable attribute going into another must win game this week against Hills Eagles. Best players for the day were Harris, Hegarty, Henning, B.Dess, A.Dess, Porter and Turnbull. Division 1 - BMFC 21.14.140 defeated Gungahlin 1.3.9 On a very wet and windy Canberra Saturday the Belconnen Magpies Div 1 team produced a blistering opening quarter against the Gungahlin Jets to put the game beyond doubt after only one term. The Magpies played inspired football in the first 25 minutes kicking 9 goals 3 behinds to the single solitary point to the Jets. The Jets had no answer to the relentless running of the Magpies, none better than Jordan Harper who was running amok off the half back flank and kicking three goals. Despite the inclement weather and wet surface Justin Hodder took on the Jets mids time and time again cutting a swathe through the middle of the ground, and sending the ball deep into the Belconnen forward fifty. The first quarter was not all wine and roses with serious injuries to Luke Donohoe and Sam Jessup leaving the Magpies two short for three and a half quarters. The game slowed up somewhat in the second quarter as the ball got heavier and the conditions started to take their toll. To their credit the Gunghalin team fought back hard around the contest, winning the stoppages for the quarter. Unfortunately for them they could convert this advantage to a single goal for the quarter, while the Magpies kicked 4 goals 4 behinds. After the long break the Magpies came out with renewed vigour and again dominated the game. Mitch Mooney was moved up the ground and repelled any Jets forward thrust and Lachie Harper was doing a lot of in close work to give the Magpies the ascendency again around the ball. Although the Magpies had much of the play for the quarter they had moved away from their structures and started to crowd the forward fifty, the result being a very low scoring quarter, with 2 goals to the Magpies and a single behind to the Jets. In the last quarter the Magpies found their disciplined game and adhered to the team structures, and essentially ran over the top of the Jets, producing a six goal to nothing quarter. Blake Talsma and Mick Archiblad both enjoyed the move forward presenting well and being a real target for the Magpies mids. Kieran Ferns had a dominant quarter across half back and Steve Miekle continued to be both a target but also a crumbing forward. The Magpies are to be congratulated for playing entertaining football in the conditions and thoroughly deserved their 131 point victory. Particular note should be made of the Belconnen defensive effort, restricting the Jets to a single major for the day. Rising Stars - BMFC 10.10. 70 defeated Marist 8.8.56 The BMFC Rising Stars had a season defining 14 point win over Marist on Saturday at Lindwall Oval. The BMFC boys flew out of the box and through terrific pressure and team play skipped away to a commanding 26 point lead shortly before quarter time only for Marist to kick the last goal of the term to bring the margin back to 20 points at the first change. Unfortunately Elweyn Stannard was a victim of a “without the ball” sling tackle that the umps completely missed but resulted in concussion and a broken AC joint. Everyone’s thoughts are with Elweyn and hope he recovers quickly and is back playing soon. The second quarter also began promisingly for BMFC but despite dominating much of the quarter Marist were able to convert in their forward line while BMFC struggled to impact the scoreboard. By halftime the margin had been clawed back to 8 points and it was looking as though a repeat of the agonising last game defeat was brewing. Enter Bubba who made a speech to the boys at half time that was in the same positive vein as his famous 2009 three quarter time address that contributed to our last Senior premiership. He basically told the boys that in his opinion they did not know just how good they are and how good they can be and that if they continue to let teams back up off the canvass they will struggle to comfortably win games. He challenged the group to go out and kick the opening goal, followed by a goal, followed by another goal – the team went one better by kicking the first four goals of the quarter to effectively end the game as a contest. Although Marist were able to win the last quarter the BMFC boys had done enough to knock off the second placed team. In what was an outstanding team performance Rhys Healy was superb all day as was Ryan Bradley, Aidan Pini, Luke Wharton and Daniel Duranti. Carl Wenke was excellent in his return from glandular fever and Matt Kelly added some stability to the backline (and chipped in with a timely goal). Division 2 - BMFC 8.6.54 defeated ANU 5.4.34 After a highly disappointing game versus ADFA the week before the magpies were keen to bounce back against a top of the table ANU side that hadn’t lost a game all year. The task was always looking tough from before the first bounce with constant rain setting the stage for what would be a heated and physical clash. The magpies without their captain looked to Ben Turnbull and Michael Coate in the middle for leadership and found what they were looking for as both players set the tone early with physical and desperate play in the wet, fighting for each possession. The magpies looked shaky early as ANU grabbed the upper hand through three goals in the opening 10 minutes before the Magpies could finally capitalise on their dominance in the clearances to kick an answering three goals and go into the first break only 1 point behind the Griffins. The second quarter was a different story for the Magpies, through quality possessions from Matt Keys, Harry Hutchison and Kane Peeters they were able to find the goals kicking four straight for the quarter to just one for the Griffins going into the main break with a 16 point lead. After the half time break the game went up another level in terms of physicality as both teams fought hard in the mud for the football. Despite repeated inside 50’s for the quarter the Magpie defence through the desperation of Rhys Hartwig, Ben Power and Sam Daniher were able to limit the Griffins to just the one goal. The Magpies knew they would have to kick some goals in the Last quarter if they wanted to hold off ANU and they got all the help they needed from their backline who kept rebounding the ball, giving the magpie forwards every opportunity to close out the game. They were unable to find the Goals for most of the last quarter until once again Matt Keys stepped up to close out the game with his third goal of the match. Next up for the magpies is Woden at football park after having the long weekend off. Division 3 - BMFC 6.5.41 were defeated by ADFA 11.16.82

The BMFC Division 3 took on the undefeated ADFA on wet Saturday afternoon. This was going to be the big test for Magpies to see where their season was at but the wet conditions was the unknown factor in the mix. The game started and once again the Magpies got on the board early through a goal through Ben Sainsbury to take the early lead. But ADFA short men seem to gain the upper hand. The Magpies fought back through a goal to Jimmy Kenna but ADFA lead by two goals going into the quarter time break. In the second quarter ADFA took control and just dominated. If it wasn't for some great backline scrambling from Toby Piper, Josh Avila and Justin Lalor, the score could've be a blow out. ADFA lead by 31 points at the main break. The third quarter started a Magpie fight back through Bubba Read, Sean Egan and Geoff Kay. Ben Sainsbury was sensational with a couple goals from great running play. ADFA lead by 19 pts at the final change. ADFA through everything at the Magpies and they had no answer. With no bench to call upon for the last 15 minutes, the Magpies ran out of legs.

While a disappointing day, there were heaps of positives out of day. Bubba Read was solid all game while Ben Sainsbury line breaking runs were crucial to the Magpie goal success. Liam Kelly battled hard up forward while Geoff Kay tried his guts out in the middle all day. The backline were under pressure all day but Toby Piper was particularly good back there. ADFA by 41 points. Goal Kickers: 4: Sainsbury 1: Kenna Markham. Best Players: Read, Sainsbury, Piper Women’s - BMFC 19.18.132 defeated ANU 1.5.11 The girls took on ANU on a cold and wet Saturday morning and came up with the four points. ANU came out surprisingly hard at the ball. We slowly started to win the hard ball gets and started to take control of the game in the first quarter, kicking 5 goals to their 1. Junior was controlling the mid field, and Chappo was strong up forward taking some strong marks and kicking goals. The second quarter, we dominated 6 goals to ANU’s 2 points. All the midfield ran hard and moved the ball well in the wet. Chloe Preston set up 3 goals from hard ball gets and clean hands. Zoe Cooke made her debut scoring 2 goals, and setting up another 2. The second half we dominated play all over the field keeping ANU to 1 point for the whole half. Other strong players on the day were Jenna Girvan with 4 goals and Stef Waite with 3 goals. The back line didn’t get much of the ball but when they did, they did well, putting us into scoring opportunities. It was great to see so many supporters out in the wet and thank you to all the helpers, Jacob Menen, Lisa Bell, Lisa Borthwick, Ruth, Susie and Jacob McCaskill for braving the conditions.
