Onehunga Security Update

School Holidays approaching Schools close for holidays next week, so expect lots more kids roaming about Onehunga town centre from July 2 to Monday July 16 when they return to school for term three. Temptations in shops may lead to an increase in shoplifting over this period, so we urge retailers and their staff to be alert so you can head off any wayward behavior. Shoplifting prevention tips Be vigilant to spot potential shoplifters and train your staff to spot potential trouble too. Remember, your gut feelings are often right - act on them! One of the best techniques to deter would-be shoplifters is to establish eye contact with any person acting suspiciously and then ask if

you can help them find what they‘re looking for - it‘s good customer service anyway and, for suspicious people, it lets them know they‘ve been noticed in the store and are being watched.

Make sure your most valuable stock items are kept close to your counter where you have the best chance of keeping an eye on them. Identify the top five items that are most regularly stolen and think about bringing these close to the counter too. Identify blind spots in your store and change your store layout or install mirrors to help tackle these risk areas.

Reminder to watch out for mobile phone thefts

Not so long ago we had a rash of thefts of mobile phones from local shops. Please remind your staff not to leave mobile phones (and other tempting personal items including handbags, wallets and laptops) on store counters or under them. Keep your personal valuables locked away in areas that customers cannot access or, in the case of your mobile, keep it on you - in a pocket or phone lanyard for example.

Remember our Onehunga Security Text Alert Service! Help us keep on top of crime in Onehunga. Contact us with good descriptions of thieves or security risks immediately following an incident and we‘ll send out a text to warn other businesses. PHONE Onehunga Business Association on 636-8535 with details including: Sex, Height / Build / Hair colour and length, Ethnicity, Age, Distinguishing features eg: tattoos, What they're wearing, Other details eg: bags,

hats, sunglasses, Description of people they‘re with. Your info will also help the Onehunga Security Guard and Police apprehend thieves and others who represent

a security threat in the area.

For great advice on making you safe in your business, read New Zealand Police’s Business Crime Prevention publication. Stop by Onehunga Business Association for a copy or read it online here: http://www.police.govt.nz/safety/business-crime-prevention.html

Buy stamps and envelopes now to save on postage Postage rates increase on July 1, 2012 NZ postage rates go up again on July 1st - the first increase since 2010. If you're quick, you can make some good savings by buying stamps and stamped envelopes before the end of June. This is a really good idea for businesses and big mailers! With regular letter postage going from 60cents to 70 cents, you can lock in savings of 10 cents and 20cents on FastPost letters—and bigger savings on larger envelopes. KiwiStamp non-denominated postage stamps – which are currently available at a recommended retail price of 60c - will remain valid postage to send a standard letter after 1 July. Paper Plus Onehunga, 239 Onehunga Mall, is offering good postage savings on Croxley Mail products and KiwiStamps right now, but hurry! Phone 634 0439 to place your orders or email [email protected]. Check out info on postage rate changes here:http://www.nzpost.co.nz/about-us/media-centre/media-release/some-postage-rates-to-rise-from-1-july-2012

A load of old rubbish Bray’s Rise businesses continue to annoy locals Every week (some) businesses from buildings on Bray‘s Rise continue to aggravate shoppers and neighbouring businesses with their thoughtless placement of rubbish bins on Paynes Lane and their ignorance of blue bin collection days. (Future collection dates are always included on page 4 of this newsletter!)

OBA and Council have been attempting to educate these businesses about how and when bins should be placed out ready for collection

for more than a year. Despite this, and the imminent threat of fines, the same inconsiderate behavior happens every week. As seen in these photos, Brays Rise tenants persist in putting out their blue bins on weeks (eg last week as seen in the photo of June 12) when there is no blue bin collection, creating additional and unnecessary blockages for pedestrians. Stacking bins two or three deep and loading extra bags on top of bins makes it almost impossible for a truck to empty bins without manually rearranging bins on the footpath first. Bins are then left on the footpath for days after Tuesday‘s collection. We again urge these businesses to be mindful and considerate when placing bins on the footpath for collection.

TOP SHOP time again

The search is on to find the best retailers of 2012 Does your business have that something special that keeps your customers coming

back for more? Does your store stand out from your competitors and do you have staff who love their jobs? If so, tell us about it when you enter the 2012 TOP SHOP® Retail Excellence Awards. Auckland TOP SHOP® is a biennial event held to recognise and celebrate retail excellence and is considered to be the most prestigious event on the Auckland retail calendar. It is also a very cost effective way for retailers to have their store mystery

Gerry Beeson’s Diamond Jubilee Lunch Community recognises Gerry’s outstanding contribution to Onehunga This month Onehunga Business Association celebrated our very own special Diamond

Jubilee: prominent local businessman, T.V. Gerrard Beeson has been in business and serving Auckland and the Onehunga community for 60 years this month. To celebrate his many good deeds and long service in and to the Onehunga community, Onehunga Business Association hosted a lunch for Gerry on Tuesday 19 June at One Pearce Street, in the Gerrard Beeson Building. OBA President, Peter Gibson, presented Gerry with a ceramic "Onehunga" tile by potter Karen Kennedy, the creator of Onehunga's famous mosaic table and couch, and Gerry‘s contribution to Onehunga was noted in a number of speeches by appreciative locals. Guests were treated to two very special dance performances - a ballet performance by 17

year-old YORK POPHAM, who heads to Canada next week to train at the world renowned Royal Winnipeg Ballet School; and Onehunga Primary School’s Samoan

Group - a group of gorgeous and excited 5 to 11 year olds led by Ma’ina Field and two parent helpers. The children performed a mā 'ulu'ulu to a song denoting the importance of respecting one's identity, and that what you do reflects the image of your whole family, whanau, village and country. Thanks to our wonderful performers and to girls from MSL's Hospitality Training course, who did a wonderful job helping set up for the lunch and serve guests. Thanks too to everyone who joined us in recognising Gerry‘s contribution to Onehunga, and of course to Gerry Beeson himself, who at the age of 86, continues to work at T.V. week! (See lots more photos from our lunch on www.facebook.com/onehunga !)

Join Onehunga Business Association’s Committee Nominations close Monday 10 September If you‘re passionate about improving Onehunga‘s town centre and creating conditions that enable businesses in the area to prosper, we‘d like you to think about joining Onehunga Business

Association‘s committee. The OBA‘s Committee approves strategies and budgets and ensures that management meets agreed performance objectives as they work towards improving the area for local businesses. In terms of the time you‘d need to set aside for this role, there are 11 meetings each year, held monthly. Meetings run approximately two hours and are generally held after work hours. Additional time may be required as various situations arise requiring action from the business association. Beyond this, energetic, well-considered extra input from committee members is always welcome to help Onehunga advance its strategic goals. The OBA‘s constitution requires a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 9 full members of the OBA to be elected. If you wish to be nominated, please request a Committee Nomination Form from us (see contact details on back page of this newsletter). Nominations should be received by Monday 10 September.

Information for Onehunga Business Association Members online

Onehunga businesses are encouraged to find out more about the OBA and its activities on our website. See the Members section (www.onehunga.net.nz/Members) for comprehensive information on the OBA and background information and guidelines that set the parameters for Auckland Council‘s Business Improvement District programmes. Let us know what other information you‘d like to see there as we have refreshed website ready to launch soon!

Cost-effective radio advertising deals available now! Radio advertising opportunities for OBA members Onehunga Business Association is recommencing our radio advertising campaign in July. As we did previously in 2009 and 2010 we are offering these spots directly to our member business at a discounted co-op advertising rate.

Members are offered 15-second advertisements, played as a ‗donut‘ - filling the ―hole‖ between a generic Onehunga ‗intro‘ and ‗outro‘ in a 30-second ad. These ‗donut‘ ads are available to members when the OBA is not using them for promoting Onehunga events. We are advertising on three Media Works stations: More FM (91.8 FM) – If you want to talk to household shoppers 25-44 years old, then MORE FM needs to be at the top of your radio advertising shopping list! MORE FM makes sure that if it‘s happening in Auckland, you‘ll hear about it. Mai FM (88.6 FM) – Mai FM represents the diverse multi-cultural urban mix, with upbeat and vibrant music. Connecting with its ‗everyone alive under 35‘ target audience, Mai FM listeners are extremely loyal to the station and it‘s advertisers. The Sound (93.8 FM) – The Sound is New Zealand‘s newest radio station, targeting 35-59 year olds. The Sound is a no-hype celebration of timeless rock. The playlist deliver a loyal and attentive audience. Without the gimmicks and hype of other stations there is less ‗clutter.‘ This station is the fastest-growing and for good reason – it‘s spreading like wildfire due to good old-fashioned word-of-mouth. Advertising packages are available across all three stations on a month-by-month basis (minimum one month booking) at a cost of $450 per station per month (you‘ll receive a minimum of 40 spots). Why Radio Advertising? If you‘re wondering why radio advertising works consider this: Radio advertising promotes your advertising message directly to your target audience, because people don‘t tend to change the station on the radio. A well written radio ad with a strong call to action could be just what you need to bring extra customers in the door! Radio advertising can help your business generate more traffic, generate more sales and ultimately increase your profit. And isn‘t that why you‘re in business in the first place?

Find out more about how Media Works radio stations can help you get more reach: www.mediaworks.co.nz/Radio/AboutUs.aspx Booking Your Radio Advertising Briar Millar, OBA‘s Events Manager, can help you to identify what you want to achieve from your radio advertising, and help you to plan the radio advertising strategy that will work for your business. She can also guide you on which of the stations may be best suited to your target market. For more information and the schedule of available spots, contact Briar directly on 636 8535.
