Objective: To gather scientific information in order to analyze the composition of Earth's atmosphere.

Atmosphere Note: What gases are in the atmosphere?

Drill: 1. Get a new Lesson Sheet from the SET. 2. Read the objective. 3. Complete Activity 1, #1.

Atmosphere: the mixture of gases that surround a planet

Can you use the definition of atmosphere to develop a definition of hydrosphere? Hydrosphere: all of the water that covers the Earth (or any planet)…hmmm

Activity 2: Let’s Get Thinking• You have just been hired as the new PAD Master (Planetary Atmospheric Designer).• You are planning to construct a new planet to be modeled after Earth. • You need to order 100 million cubic meters of gases for the atmosphere. • Decide what gases you are going to order and how much of each gas you need. • Then calculate the percent of each gas in the atmosphere.

Describe two or more ways in which the atmosphere is important to life on Earth.

1. Provides the gases that living things need to

survive

2. Heat is trapped allowing for liquid water

3. Meteoroids burn up in the atmosphere.

4. Dangerous radiation is blocked.

Provide information about of each of the following gases found in Earth’s atmosphere.

Nitrogen: Needed for growth and repair of body

cellsOxygen:

Needed for burning fuelsNeeded by plants and animalsOzone protects against ultraviolet rays

Carbon Dioxide:Needed by plants for producing food

Explain the role of water vapor in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Water vapor in the atmosphere contributes to our weather. Clouds form when water vapor condenses. This leads to precipitation which helps to circulate Earth’s waters.
