TRANSCRIPT

Punisher War Zone opens on a helicopter shot of NEW YORK CITY. In fact, every few minutes you get a shot of the skyline or a random subway line to remind you that this takes place in NEW YORK CITY, before we cut away to a house in Vancouver or a set in Prague. Every character has a slick "bufangool" NYC accent that adds the right amount of cheesy tang to the film. This isn't the "Nerds in Paradise" version of the Punisher starring Tom Jane, Travolta and the city of Tampa. When we first meet Frank Castle, Mobsters are meeting doing bad things. The Punisher arrives on cue and paints the house red. Those who survive only live long enough to get killed in the next setup. When an undercover agent is killed by the Punisher in a shootout, his partner Special Agent Budiansky vows to get revenge. The only way to do that is to join Detective Soap's Punisher Task Force/Fan Club. Bodies continue to pile upuntil the bad guys band up and take over an abandoned hotel. Soon Frank has to storm the Castle as he confronts the nefarious Jigsaw. You get the sense director Lexi Alexander saw this as an opportunity to recreate Tim Burton's Batmanas a proper horror film. It is bloody, sticky, full of gooey sound effects and shot like a gothic horror film. Everything is backlit in a yellow or blue-green haze that makes this NYC look like a Cruising version of Gotham City. Frank Castle's subway hideout is shot wide and designed like a batcave. Wayne Knight's Microchip makes a fine Alfred. Agent Budiansky and Detective Soap are the id and ego of a Commissioner Gordon. Plus is has a guy exploding during a parkour move! Just like Batman! The performances in Punisher War Zone are what make this film truly stand out. Ray Stevenson is really great as Frank Castle. He is physically imposing and carries a scowl on his face that says I've headbutted many people in my life. Dominic West seems to be having the time of his life as Jigsaw. He is the goofy and terrifying Joker this film needs. He even gets a face unmasking scene like Nicholson's Joker. And Doug Hutchinson's Loony Bin Jim is the twitchy Jackie Chan/Mr. Peepers/Hannibal Lecter this film needs. Overall I really enjoy this film. It's delightfully bonkers. It's a reflection of and reaction to the previous attempts at a Punisher film. It could never be made today. Marvel is a different company now. Today Frank Castle would be helping the Avengers defeat Thanos. Which is fine. Let this film stand alone as a glorious tribute to comic/horror/action/comedy hybrids the world over (mainly Bollywood I imagine). Oh God, now I've got brains splattered all over me. That is the last line of the movie. I love it!

YIFY knocks it out the park again with this rip. It is 720p and under 1GB. If every movie could be available like this there would be a 2TB hard drive under every Christmas tree. Mazel tov!
