Welcome to «fair Verona, where we lay our scene» and to 3DV 2018, the sixth edition of the International Conference on 3D Vision.
Since 2011, when 3DIM and 3DPVT joined forces to create a new yearly conference dedi-cated to 3D research (originally known as 3DIM-PVT for the first two editions), 3DV has estab-lished itself as a premier conference for dissemi-nating results covering a broad variety of topics in 3D research in computer vision and graphics, including acquisition, modelling, analysis, render-ing and interaction.
We have received 168 valid submissions, which is in line with the previous editions. After a careful selection process coordinated by the Program Chairs, 82 papers were accepted for publication and presentation in the main program. Continu-ing a recently established tradition within our community we will have oral or spotlight presen-tations and all papers will also be presented as posters.
As customary, in addition to the main conference sessions, this year’s program features some co-located events including 6 tutorials, industrial exhibitions, demos, and exciting social activities in a unique historical setting. The social program includes a welcome reception and a banquet at the conference venue, the Gran Guardia Palace, facing the famous Arena, in the heart of Verona.
I wish to thank all members of the organisation committee, for their relentless efforts to make the conference a success. Special thanks go to Andrea Giachetti for his invaluable help in deal-ing with all practical aspects of the conference organisation and to Ronny Hänsch for oversee-ing the CMT site and the publication process. I am also grateful to the program committee mem-bers for their fundamental work in reviewing and selecting papers, and Area Chairs, reviewers and authors for making this event possible. The con-ference would not be possible in its current form without the generosity of our corporate partners, and their support is deeply appreciated. Let me also express gratitude to my friend Guido Corte-lazzo, the Honorary Chair of 3DV 2018, who started the 3DPVT series in 2002, and has re-cently retired.
To close, I wish all the attendees a highly stimu-lating, informative and enjoyable conference.
Andrea Fusiello, Università di Udine 3DV 2018 General Chair
Message from the General Chair 3DV 2018
We would like to welcome you to Verona, Italy for the 2018 edition of the International Conference on 3D Vision (3DV 2018). 3D Computer Vision keeps growing with a dramatic pace thanks to exciting recent developments, such as the ad-vent of 3D sensors, rapid advances in deep learning, and large scale 2D image or 3D geome-try database open to the public. Exciting new applications in robotics, autonomous systems, man/machine interaction, virtual and augmented reality, or 3D video and displays, are adding further momentum to our field. Many of the ap-plications in these fields require the solution to 3D Computer Vision problems at the core.
The International Conference on 3D Vision has developed into a premiere venue to showcase state-of-the-art work in 3D computer vision and related disciplines. Many fundamental challenges are still unresolved and we are pleased that this edition of 3DV proposes new approaches and solutions to these problems. 3DV 2018 received 168 valid submissions. The program chairs did not submit any paper to 3DV 2018 to avoid direct conflicts throughout the review process. The general chair was allowed to submit papers but did not have any access to the CMT system beyond that of an author.
The program chairs invited 24 Area Chairs (ACs) who handled about seven papers each. ACs were selected to provide a broad range of exper-tise, to balance junior and senior members, and to represent a variety of geographical locations. Based on the suggestions from ACs, the program chairs assigned papers to 200 reviewers. To improve the quality of each review, the program chairs and ACs worked hard to balance the load and limited the number of papers assigned to each reviewer up to four. After each paper was reviewed by three reviewers, ACs carefully read the reviews and made a final recommendation in close coordination with the PCs.
In the end, 24 papers were accepted for an oral presentation, and 58 papers were accepted for a poster presentation. By following a recent trend in the other computer vision conferences, we have continued the tradition of spotlight presen-tations introduced at 3DV 2017 by allocating four minutes for a better dissemination of ideas to the community. In the three-day program, we are also happy to have three invited speakers from academia and industry who will tell us about their work and share their vision of the future of the field.
Message from the Program Committee 3DV 2018
We would like to thank all the reviewers, the area chairs, the organising committee members, the invited speakers, and, most importantly, the authors who have submitted papers to our con-ference. We would also like to show our deepest gratitude to all of the emergency reviewers who kindly responded to our last-minute request and provided thorough reviews for papers with miss-ing reviews. Finally, we would like to thank all our sponsors and express our gratitude to the CMT team for their support.
