Whose picture do you need? Attached are lists of committee members and speak-ers. Beth Gale and Jan Wingate assembled a list of restaurants in the local area for the hos-pitality table. I would like an explanation of the “Hospitality Buck,” which will be given out to everyone during the afternoon sessions Tues-Fri. The bucks are for $1 credit in the restaurant and/or “Grab n’Go.” Please men-tion, too, that we want a fragrance-free tour-nament, because that was a major complaint in the 2013 survey. I’ve made signs for the doors, but it wouldn’t hurt to mention it in the DB. I’ll look for a picture of myself unless Steve Simpson has one of me looking a couple

True Stories (Really)

At the recent St louis nationals an unlucky soul from Tx relayed to me a sad story. After a match in the finals of the Na-

tional swiss, a pretty tough event, he compared scores with his teammates and quickly realized that there were duplicated

scores. It soon became apparent that they sat in the same direction. So the final VP results were 0 for their team and -5 for the

opponents. They had also earned a -5 vps for a cell phone violation!

Also at the nationals. Playing in a national final, we had an auction that started with a one spade bid from the opponents. I

overcalled 2H, LHO bid 2S and after I bid 4H my LHO asked if my partners 3S bid was forcing. I gave the honest reply that

we had not discussed it. Although my LHO

Robert Morton

An avid bridge player since college, Robert (Bob) Morton of San Angelo, TX has been a student of the game for over 30+

years. Recently retired, Bob was a practicing physician in Arkansas City, Kansas and San Angelo for over 30 years. He proudly par-

ticipates in the Thursday evening games in San Angelo with his wife and bridge partner, Louisa. This game is dedicated to his pas-

sion for duplicate bridge and his steadfast approach to its challenges.

Diane Olson

There are few San Antonio players who lives have not been touched by Diane and whose bridge games have

not been improved by her teaching. Diane just became a Platinum Life Master, holding more than 10,000

MP. She is quick to remind us that she has been playing for many years, as if that explained it! Diane makes

time to mentor novice players and play with intermediate players. Though she is among the superstars in the

San Antonio bridge community, Diane is always patient and polite with those at the table. She is highly and

affectionately regarded by all.

Ed Rawlinson

Ed has been a guiding influence in Unit 172 for many years. He has held the top office of president and fre-

quently has been elected to the board. He is a regular host of the awards day celebration and holds bridge din-

ners in his home for lucky winners of the unit's lottery. He is well known for his service to the bridge commu-

nity. He serves at all levels of club activities including political, social, education and mentoring. Ed is a top

player yet he is very approachable and is responsive to less experienced players who ask for his help. No one

serves the district more generously or in more capacities than does Ed.

Laurie Levin’s Students

Laurie Levin salutes her students! She counts herself lucky to have the privilege to teach a

group of smart, fun and engaging students. It is a pleasure to spend time together. Laurie

thanks them all for the continued interest and friendship .
