What is the Internet?
• A worldwide network of computer networks.
• interconnection of large and small networks around the globe.
Distinguish between the Internet and the WorldWide Web (WWW)
• The Internet consists of all computers andnetworks across the world which are able tocommunicate with each other using telephone,fiber optic, microwave, radio, satellite or anyother type of link.– The Internet includes private, commercial,
government and military computer systems.
• The World Wide Web or WWW is part of the Internet.– This consists of servers that store web pages which
can be read by browsers
Define and understand the terms
• HTTP – Hypertext Transfer Protocol - is the method used fortransferring data over the Internet.
• URL – Uniform Resource Locator – is an address for a resourceon the Internet.– It is basically the Web address for a site on the Internet
• Hyperlink – this is a link in a Web document which connectsto information in another document.– It is usually highlighted in the text, and sometimes is underlined as well
Define and understand the terms
• ISP – Internet Service Provider – a company that providesaccess to the Internet.– These companies usually charge a fee and provide the user with a dial-up
number, cable access or a satellite connection which allows use of theircomputer system and services.
• FTP – File Transfer Protocol – is the language used to transferfiles between computers on the Internet.
• HTML – Hypertext Markup Language – is a standardizedcoding language used to create Web pages.– It is not a programming language, but instead controls the design and links on
the pages of a website.
Web Browsers
• A web browser is a program used to access the Internet services and resources available through the World Wide Web.
• Examples of Web Browsers are:– Internet Explorer
– Netscape Navigator
– Opera
– Mozilla
Search Engine
• Software that enables users to search the Internet using keywords.
• Popular Search engines are:
– Altavista
– Lycos
Book marking Websites
• A bookmark is a method of storing links to individual web pages or web locations on your computer.
– Bookmark is the term used by Netscape;
– Favorites is the Internet Explorer term.
Book Mark Folder
• A book mark folder is basically a folder setup on your computer and all your links to your book marked websites reside in it
Protected Websites
• Protected websites are sites that require the user to have a user name and a password to gain access to the protected area.
Encryption
• Encryption is a method of coding files or e-mail messages so that they can only be readby authorized users.
Digital Certificate
• A digital certificate is an electronic "credit card“ that establishes your credentials when doing business or other transactions on the Web.
• It is issued by a certification authority (CA).
• It contains your name, a serial number, expiration dates
e-commerce• Web sites which offer goods or services are open 24
hours a day
• A key issue of e-commerce is credit card safety
– make sure you order from a legitimate, secure website toavoid credit-card fraud.• This fraud occurs when someone uses your credit card information
to make unauthorized purchases
• Newer versions of browsers handle SSL- Secure Socket Layer, anencryption method used to safely send your personal informationover the Internet and commonly used by reputable e-commercesites.

Firewall
• A firewall is a hardware/software systemwhich is used to prevent unauthorized users.
• It can also filter data entering a system toprevent the appearance of viruses orinappropriate material.
• Firewalls are used on many LANs and WANs.
Electronic Mail
• E-mail (electronic mail) consists of messagescreated and sent via the computer and theInternet.
• An e-mail address consists of the name of theperson or company, the @ symbol (at) and thename of the service provider.
• For example, in the e-mail [email protected], simonsays is thename/identification of the recipient, andhotmail.com is the service provider.
