    A Journey to the Centre

of the EarthA J ourney to the Centre of the Earthis a classic1864 science fictionnovel by Jules Verne. The storyinvolvesGerman professor Otto Lidenbrock who believes thereare volcanic tubes going toward the centre of the Earth. He,his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans descend intotheIcelandic volcano Snfellsjkull, encountering manyadventures, including prehistoric animals and naturalhazards, before eventually coming to the surface againinsouthern Italy, at the Stromboli volcano. In the mid-19th century, during Verne's lifetime, exploration to unknown lands was in vogue.During this period, the interior of Africa, thegeographical and magnetic poles, and much of

Central and South America were little known byEuropeans. Well known explorers such as SirRichard Burton and Henry Morton Stanley andDavid Livingston were exploring above theearth's surface as their fictional counterpartsProfessor Hardwigg and Harry were exploringbelow. Also, Charles Darwin was gaining attention for his theory of evolution; this is touchedon byVerne in this novel. New frontiers were opening while "new ideas about the planet'score,

prehistoric man, dinosaurs, and early life on earth battled religious intolerance andBarnum-likehoaxes" (Afterword 292). The Afterword of this Signet Classic edition explains thatVerne "wasable to adapt nearly every important element in the story's action from contemporary, intellectual, literary, scientific, and geographical thought" (291). The world during Verne's lifetimewas aferment of new ideas and was exploding with new knowledge. Verne captures thatspiritinJourney to the Center of the Earth.

    Verne's Life

Jules Verne was born in 1828 in France and died in 1905, spending the majority ofhis life writing over eighty books. He was born to a father who was a lawyer and to a mother who came from a familyof ship builders and sea captains.

The oldest of five children, Jules was trained in law but was more interested inwriting opera librettos and plays, much to the chagrin of his father. After his first bookwas published in 1863, he devoted his life to writing, although geography and travelremained dominant interests.

Verne had no formal training in science. His passion was geography; everything elsehe learned from his reading, which included about fifteen newspapers a day. He tookvoluminous notes giving him a good sense of the emerging knowledge in many fields. He was very modest about his ability to predict inventions, saying he only extendedwhat was already happening at the time.

    Visual Concept

For my concepts I wanted to create rich enviroments to compliment Verne's ideas inA Journey tothe Centre of the Earth. Here he's described these wonderous places from his mind, crystals thathung like "clustered chandeliers", mushrooms that stood up to forty to fifty metershigh and evena vast plain of bones...Worlds full of pure fantasy and adventure.I want to use strong colour combinations to bring out the best in my ideas.
