Use SLS for online HBL to:
a) Create interactive and engaging learning experiences with activities
b) Scaffold learning c) Collect digital products from students d) Monitor and provide feedback to students to
ensure Assessment for Learning (AfL)
Key considerations for planning online HBL lessons:
Adopt Synchronous or Asynchronous learning
Nature of learning content (revision or new learning content)
Schedule and duration of the HBL lesson
Student’s ability to access SLS
SLS features and other technology tools such as video conferencing that can support students learning and interactions
The Singapore Student Learning Space (SLS) is the key online platform for supporting schools’ Home-Based Learning (HBL) measures. It is more than an online repository of materials for students to access. A good understanding of the SLS features will allow teachers to enable students to learn anytime, anywhere and at their own pace. Teachers can also create a virtual classroom via SLS and for online HBL.
In Annex A, teachers can find basic admin information on using SLS:
Resetting of password
Creating and assigning a lesson
Monitoring students’ progress
Managing a class
Sharing lessons with colleagues
Not familiar with using SLS?
In Annex C, teachers can find information on using the video conferencing tool Zoom
to support their online HBL lessons, particularly for conducting synchronous learning
with live lessons:
Installing, hosting and navigating a Zoom Meeting (For teachers)
Downloading and navigating a Zoom Meeting (For students)
Not familiar with video conferencing tools?
Teachers should follow
the recommended
maximum screen time
duration of 2 hours per
day for online HBL.
Introduction
There are 2 types of online HBL: Synchronous (live at scheduled timing)
and Asynchronous (at student’s own time). In the next few pages,
teachers can find out more about how they can design and conduct either
types of HBL using SLS.
There will also be tips on how SLS features can help teachers in the design and implementation of online HBL lessons.

Finding lesson ideas and examples in SLS Gallery
Regardless of synchronous or asynchronous learning, teachers should state clearly the learning objectives and success criteria for the online HBL lesson. Teachers should also
determine the nature of the learning content.
Planning for HBL lessons
Nature of learning content (for Synchronous /Asynchronous Learning)
Is the learning objective for students to revise previously-taught content or learn new content?
Are there digital resources in the subject Teaching & Learning Guide (TLG) that can be used?
Are there existing resources that teachers can tap on for the SLS lesson? (e.g. MOE Library resources, Community Gallery with e-Catalogue @ go.gov.sg/slscglessons )
Can students access other resources on SLS (i.e. MOE Library) for self-directed learning as part of learning for the lesson? If so, do they know how to access these resources?
Teachers can adapt lesson ideas from MOE Library or Community Gallery on SLS.
Students can also access lessons from MOE Library for Self-Directed Learning on SLS.
After students open an MOE Library Resource for the first
time, they may access other resources under ‘Self-Study’ or
‘Learning About’ section. Teachers may need to brief and
remind students on how to do this.

In synchronous learning, teachers can leverage technological tools to enable classes to learn
together at the same time without physical face-to-face presence. This also provides an
opportunity for teachers to check on the well-being of their students during home-based
learning. There are some key considerations when planning for synchronous learning in the
form of a live lesson. Teachers should go through the following considerations when designing
and conducting synchronous learning.
Refers to simultaneous learning by all students at the same time
Schedule and duration
Students are aware of the scheduled lesson
Teacher has factored in timing and buffer for students to log in prior to the start of the lesson
Lesson has been scheduled to start at least 1 hour before the assigned lesson time
Students’ ability to access SLS lessons
Students can log in to SLS Students know how to get help for troubleshooting issues Students know how to reset their password, if necessary Students know how to find the lesson on SLS
Conducting a Live Lesson in SLS
Teachers can conduct a Live Lesson by clicking the ‘Live Lesson View’ under ‘View Assignment’.
Synchronous Learning
Teachers can complement lessons with video conferencing tools such as Zoom to enhance interactions with students.
We would advise that video conferencing should be carried out in 15-minutes blocks, interspersed with other activities, to maintain student engagement and focus.
Some streaming applications have time limitations for their free version, for example, the free version of Zoom is limited to 40 minutes per session.
Using video conferencing tools with SLS
For more information about accessing Zoom, refer to Annex C1.
To find out how you can use Zoom in a synchronous learning environment, refer to Annex C2.
1 A Live Lesson allows teachers to control student’s
access to learning activities in real-time using the toggle
button next to each activity.
Live Lesson View allows for student-student, and
teacher-student interactions. These interactions can be
facilitated by the use of the Interactive Thinking Tool
and Poll features in SLS.

Enabling sharing of documents between teachers and students
With file-sharing applications,
teachers can collect digital files
from students instantaneously.
Teachers may also upload files for
immediate access by students
during the synchronous lesson.
Teachers can allow for file sharing from students by embedding file-sharing applications such
as Google Drive in an SLS lesson.
3
Here are some key considerations when conducting video conferencing with students:
6. As a privacy rule, students should participate in the video conferencing from their home
living room and not bedroom.
7. Teachers and students should be appropriately dressed.
8. Students should not be eating or attempting other activities during video conferencing,
to avoid being distracted from the learning process.
Key Considerations when conducting video conferencing
4. Set class rules to ensure smooth running of video conferencing sessions.
Remind students to:
a. Mute their microphones when they first join an online meeting
b. Key in their names in a standardised format for easy identification during online
meeting, e.g. Index Number _Full Name
c. Observe cyber wellness, e.g. not send inappropriate digital content to their peers
d. Follow established rules from teacher if they wish to speak, e.g. Zoom allow
students to virtually raise their hands to indicate they would like to speak.
e. Follow established guidelines on classroom behaviour.

To allow for real-time collaboration of students in a synchronous learning environment, teachers
can embed collaborative productivity tools such as Google Docs or Google Slides in SLS
lessons for students to discuss and co-create shared digital products.
SLS has a list of websites and web applications that are approved as secure for embedding
in SLS lessons, including Google tools.
Teachers can find a list of these whitelisted websites and URLs in the SLS User Guide.
By embedding collaborative productivity tools in SLS, students are able to work
together in real time.
This allows students to build on one another’s learning. Teachers can also
monitor their students’ work progress and provide feedback when necessary.

Refers to independent student learning that does not occur at the same time
. Teachers can schedule the start date and time of their SLS lessons when they are assigning SLS lessons to students.
Online HBL can also take the form of asynchronous learning, where teachers can assign SLS lessons to students for them to complete a series of learning activities at their own pace. Students can complete the tasks and homework at their own pace within a stipulated HBL period or over a longer timeframe e.g. a week. Unlike synchronous learning, students usually will not receive instant feedback for activities or obtain instant replies to their questions during asynchronous learning. Apart from assigning SLS lessons to students, teachers will need to actively monitor their learning, e.g. using the SLS Heat Map tool, and actively give feedback to help students progress in their learning. These are some key considerations when planning for asynchronous learning:
Schedule and duration
Students are aware of the scheduled lesson
Teacher has factored in timing and buffer for students to log in prior to the start of the lesson
The lesson has been scheduled to start at least 1h before the assigned time to allow for flexibility
in students’ log-in time
Students’ ability to access SLS lessons
Students are able to log in to SLS Students know how to get help for troubleshooting issues Students know to reset their password, if necessary Students know how to find the lesson on SLS
Asynchronous Learning
Scheduling a SLS lesson and pacing lesson activities
1
2
By scheduling the lesson’s start date
and time, teachers can assign their
lessons in advance for planned release
to students.
It is a good idea for teachers to release
their lessons an hour before students
are meant to log in to provide flexibility
and a seamless experience for the
students.
Teachers can also control access to
specific activities in a lesson and make
key activities mandatory.

Monitoring and providing feedback to students
Teachers can monitor and provide feedback to students’ responses in SLS by:
1. Teachers can add hints and explanations within the SLS Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) or
Free Response Questions (FRQ) to provide students with immediate feedback on their
responses.
2. Teachers can track the students’ progress and understanding using the SLS Heat Map feature
3. Teachers can provide Providin students with feedback by commenting on their responses
before releasing the next activity/activities for them to continue their learning.

How do I conduct a lesson with Zoom?
When conducting a lesson, you should consider the affordances of
Zoom. You can use Zoom to deliver lessons and to further engage
students in learning. Features on the free version of Zoom are
sufficient to conduct online HBL. Teachers should advise students to
fully utilise the free features. It is not necessary for teachers and
students to purchase the paid version of Zoom account and app.
Starting a lesson with Zoom Video conferencing tools such as Zoom are suitable for synchronous
learning. However, students need to be briefed ahead on the
schedule of the lessons and login to the video conferencing platform,
e.g. Zoom, at a pre-arranged time.
While Zoom allows us to
bridge the distance
between teachers and
students, teachers might
want to set clear
guidelines for
students to follow e.g.,
students should not send
malicious content to their
friends.

To manage participants in Zoom, you can click ‘Manage Participants’. There are two levels to managing your students:
as a class
by individuals
As a class, you can ‘Mute All’ students’ microphones, view who has
raised their hand and broadcast messages to everyone.
To communicate with the individual, you would need to mouse over the student’s name. You can use this function to start a separate chat with the student i.e. to check on their understanding, prompt them to share their video, etc.
Standardising the
way students name
themselves will minimise
inappropriate words that
will be used for naming.
