The Project

We are seeking to create an online featureexploring the effects that online streamingservices, such as Netflix and Hulu, wouldhave on the Australian Broadcast Industry.

A Changing Media Landscape

Film and television media products are

becoming increasingly available online.

Schonfeld (2011) reported that nearly 50% ofTV viewers are sourcing content online.Further, these patterns have changed andviewers are now watching online contentduring primetime.

Accordingly, it is important that the Australianmedia industry learn to adapt to thesechanging viewing patterns.

Online Streaming

Online streaming refers to the viewing oftelevision and film online. Companies such asNetflix and Hulu have capitalized on thistrend, by charging members a monthly fee forunlimited access to material.

These websites have been widely popular. InAustralia, the company Quickflix hasattempted to provide a similar service. Due tocomparative lack of content, it has not been

as successful.

Proposed Content

We intend to report on the following aspectsof online streaming:

The legality of these services Protection of streaming rights Content restrictions The implications on advertising The effect on ratings The impact on live programming

Target Publication

This feature will be best suited to ScreenHub. Screen Hub is an online magazinetargeted at the broadcast industry. Thisallows us to reach an audience with a broadunderstanding of these issues, and aninterest in learning the impact onlinestreaming will have on the industry.

Engagement Strategy

Further, we intend to engage users throughuse of a variety of multimedia techniques(Creech, 2011).

Beyond base-line text, we intend to includevideo interviews with experts and pictureslideshows to illustrate the change in theindustry. Not only is this visually moredynamic, but with further give credibility to thesite through use of experts in the field.
