Overview
• The delivery of training for field instructors is not optional
• CSWE EPAS standard 2.1.7– programs are required to discuss how its field
education program provides orientation, field instruction training, and continuing dialog with field education settings and field instructors

Our Reality
• Massive changes and funding cuts to social welfare programs
• Down-sizing of social work staff • Social workers asked and required to do more
with less• Social workers guard their time even more • Dollars for travel to educational conferences
and events is sparse, if not non-existent.

Demand for Creativity & Flexibility
• Field instructors don’t have time for long trainings
• Field instructors can no longer leave the office for days to attend training
• Field instructors now working with several universities
• Online programs have field instructors all over the country in multiple time zones

Current Training Methods
• On-site (face-to-face)• Hybrid
– Some onsite & some online• Online Training
– Synchronous• Participants required to be online at the same time
– Asynchronous• Participants can access information online at any time

Benefits of Online Training
• Flexibility– Training can be done at time that’s most
convenient for field instructor• Saves time
– Field instructor – University field staff
• Saves money– No travel required

• Two training options• Synchronous
– Live online trainings are held each quarter• Asynchronous
– Recordings of online trainings are available• 3 sessions
– (1) Orientation– (2) Supervision– (3) Safety

• Adobe Connect (used at Walden)• Adobe Captivate• YouTube• PowerPoint• TaskStream• Many other platforms

• Field offices must be prepared to meet challenges of current social work climate
