Calves are the future of any dairy herd, ensuring your calves encounter little to no setbacks during the milk feeding phase will have a positive effect on your calves future fertility and milk production. As an industry we spend millions of dollars on genetics to get the type of animals that best suit a dairy farmer's specific need, but making sure our calves reach their own genetic potential is just as important and provides the best possible return on investment for that spent on genetics. The following pages will provide information on three key aspects of calf rearing to consider to ensure your calves get the best possible start in life. Permatrace Cattle 100 Pellets

Calving is one of the busiest times of the year. Calf scours can impact your business in so many ways: • Extra stress, labour and cost in
treatment and control • Fewer replacement heifers and
adverse fertility outcomes • Lowered growth and
production performance • Fewer eligible animals for live
export By vaccinating your herd prior to calving, ideally around the beginning of colostrum formation, higher levels of antibody can concentrate in colostrum. This provides improved passive immunity for the new born calf.

Colostrum ManagementProviding the right amount of good quality colostrum very soon after birth really does get all calves off to a great start. The benefits include:
• Less scours and other diseases
• Reduced death rates
• Better growth rates
• Improved milk production in the long term
Healthy calf development depends on good quality colostrum. Source: Dairy Austrailia: Rearing Healthy Calves Guide
What is colostrum and why is it so important?Unlike a human infant, a calf receives no antibodies before birth as the maternal blood supply to the calf is separate to the cow’s placenta. This prevents the transfer of antibodies from cow to calf and leaves the calf with no initial ability to fight disease. Colostrum is the first milk produced after birth and provides the antibodies a calf needs to protect itself from infectious diseases until the calf starts to develop its own antibodies at around 6 weeks of age. Colostrum begins to develop in the weeks leading up to calving and completely stops immediately after. Colostrum is therefore at its strongest concentration and highest quality at the point of calving.
Quite simply, if a calf doesn’t receive enough high quality colostrum it is likely to die.
Timing is everythingThe antibodies in colostrum are called immunoglobulins or IgG’s for short.
Because IgG’s are such a large molecule there is a limited time frame in which a new born calf can absorb them. Key facts to remember are:
• The calf intestine absorbs the large IgG molecules easily straight after birth
• The intestine’s ability to absorb antibodies decreases after birth — 30-50% within 6 hours of birth
• It stops completely between 24 to 36 hours after birth
Get good quality colostrum into all calves as soon as possible after birth. Source: Dairy Austrailia: Rearing Healthy Calves Guide
Know your colostrum qualityThe quality of colostrum can differ greatly, even if a calf receives plenty of high quality maternal colostrum shortly after birth, successful passive immunity transfer will not be achieved if the concentration level of the colostrum is low.
High quality colostrum is defined as having an IgG concentration of greater than 50 micrograms per millilitre.
The most accurate form of testing colostrum quality is with a BRIX refractometer. The cut off for high quality colostrum on the BRIX scale is 22%.
If your colostrum doesn’t reach that level there are now products available to increase the IgG concentration of colostrum, when using a colostrum supplement ensure you only use genuine bovine colostrum products.

BeddingControlling the body temperature of your calves is very important. The more energy a calf uses to keep itself warm the less energy it has to grow.
Providing clean, dry bedding will help a calf maintain body temperature by preventing heat loss. Bedding should be at least 15cm deep at all times to allow a calf to be able to nestle deeply.
Bedding OptionsThere are many different options when it comes to bedding material such as wood shavings, bark and rice hulls. Each option has advantages and disadvantages but always consider the following:
• Ongoing availability
• Pricing
• Drainage and absorbency If calves lay on a wet surface they will lose body temperature Excess moisture on bedding surface creates ideal
conditions for bacteria to spread
• Will material compact over time?
• Are calves likely to eat bedding material? If calves nibble at bedding they are highly likely to consume disease causing bugs as well
• Avoid using dusty materials These can irritate and cause respiratory problems

Pricing may vary in some locations due to freight. Refer to terms and conditions.
Calf Shed HygieneMaintaining a clean environment within calf housing is very important and can make a real difference to the amount of bacteria and disease a calf is exposed to.
Unfortunately, bacteria will be present in all calf rearing environments, however good hygiene practises will limit a calf’s exposure to this bacteria and decrease the chance of contracting a disease. Examples of good hygiene practices would include:

Pre-Season or before introducing a new calf
1. Remove bedding as soon as practical after a calf, or group of calves, is removed from pen - Whether batch or seasonal calving
2. Remove any organic matter such as manure or saliva from pens
3. Disinfect pens and feeders a. Wet pens thoroughly b. Allow minimum 15 minutes contact time before thorough hosing down
4. Sterilise ground a. Only use a genuine ground steriliser b. There is very little evidence of the efficacy of hydrated lime as a ground steriliser c. Hydrated lime can also cause issues with eyes, feet and respiratory system
5. Apply fresh, clean bedding
In Season
1. Replenish bedding frequently a. Ensuring a minimum of 15cm depth at all times
2. Remove organic matter such as manure or saliva from pen a. If hosing pen, avoid wetting calf where possible
3. Apply a weekly application of an organic ground steriliser a. The right ground steriliser will not only control bacteria but will keep bedding dryer as well b. Use only a product safe for use whilst calves are in the pen c. Never use hydrated lime whilst a calf is in the pen

Things to keep in mind to ensure bio-security of calf housing…• In seasonal or batch calving herds, calf sheds should be cleaned as soon
as practically possible after the last calf is finished
• Disease pathogens persist longer in the environment if organic materials such as manure, saliva and bedding are present so all bedding and organic material should be removed
• Pressure cleaning, where possible, is recommended
• Calf rearing personnel should be clean at all times - Pay special attention to clothes and boots
• Make sure disinfecting procedures are carried out carefully
