This 50’ rib side box car with single door and no roofwalk is blue with white band and herald and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. The Port Huron & Detroit Railroad was incorporated on September 1, 1917 and remained in business until 1984 when it was sold to the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. To encourage the return of the boxcars, short line railroads like Port Huron, could charge a per diem, or daily fee, until the cars were returned.

These 39’ single dome tank cars are aluminum with black lettering and run on Bettendorf trucks. Built in 1941 at the Milton, PA plant and assigned road numbers 1005 and 1006, these cars were used in the transportation of chemical solvents and raw materials for synthetic rubbers.

PER DIEM SERIES CAR #12

This 57’ converted TOFC flat car is brown with white lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1968, this car originally ran with JHTX reporting marks. In 1987, it was purchased from Railmark, Inc and renumbered NLAX 127 and carries one of several restored MQU’s that were used during the Apollo space flights. SERIES CAR #5

This 89’ tri-level closed autorack is orange with black lettering and aluminum roof and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1979 as part of series 810352-810456, this enclosed autorack design became the universal standard for most railroads by the mid 1970s, as it prevents vandalism and pilferage and helps to protect vehicles from the elements. This D&RGW marked autorack rides on an ETTX flat.

Louisville & NashvilleRoad Number 41044

This 50’ auto box car with double side doors and end door is grey with yellow ends and roof and one yellow door and runs on Bettendorf trucks. The Louisville & Nashville railroad used boxcars and piggyback trailers for transporting company material between cities. Originally red with white reporting marks, they were repainted into the yellow and grey scheme, denoting company materials service in the early 1970s.

This 3-2 heavyweight observation car is green with white lettering and runs on 6-wheel passenger trucks. Built by the Pullman Company in Chicago in 1917 it had the appearance of a conventional observation car, containing an observation room, dining room, and sleeping births. It received air conditioning in May of 1943, and continued to operate across the New Haven network for another decade or more.

This 3-bay covered hopper with elongated hatches is grey with black lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1965 as part of series 260706 – 260725, these cars were used to haul commodities like grain.

Canadian NationalRoad Number 8696

This 70’ heavyweight baggage car is painted green with black band and yellow lettering and runs on 6-wheel passenger trucks. Built in 1924, it served the CN system running in express passenger trains until it was retired from the roster in 1971 despite being in good condition. As commercial trucking became more prominent, express small package delivery moved away from the rails and over to the roads.

Built in 1964 as part of series 886000 – 886096, the NEC system was the largest of the eastern railroads in track mileage and second only to the Pennsylvania Railroad in Revenue.

This 48’ rib side container is white with aluminum ribs and red ‘speed lettering’. A number of 48’ domestic containers found their way onto the Southern Pacific intermodal roster in the late 1980s and early 1990s. With a door height of 102 inches, these containers could be used for virtually any general merchandise service.

Built in 1951 as part of an order of 250 cars, these cars were serviced and repainted into the green and yellow scheme in 1963. Maine Central was chartered in 1856 and by 1981 it had more than 1,000 miles of track. It continued to operate until 1981 when it was absorbed by what is now Pan Am Railways.

It is common today to see miles of similarly marked tank cars snaking their way from the refineries to major distribution centers. As a safety measure, Buffer Cars, generally older covered hoppers, are placed at the head of the consist and at the rear providing crush space in case of an accident. This new 16-car set features two BNSF Airslide Hoppers converted to Buffer Cars and 14 modern CTCX tank cars giving the modeler a ready-to-run movable pipeline for their layouts.
