Festival: The Countdown BeginsWe are less than two weeks away from our annual family party: the St. Cecilia Parish festival. A lot of work has already been done to get us to where we are today. One can only imagine how much effort has already been put forth to make the festival happen. For instance, all the orders have been placed, the proper licenses attained, the many loads of flea market items brought into the gym and class-rooms and then priced, the promotional materials produced and the signs posted in yards, the raffle tickets mailed and purchased, the volunteers recruited and jobs allocated, the many unique bid & buy items donated, and the live entertainment booked—Danny Frazier Band, Just Strange Brothers, and Saffire Express.

Of course, we cannot forget to mention Sunday’s chicken dinner that has been arranged, the booth sponsors successfully lined up, the festival shirts designed and ready for purchase. The list could go on and on. Indeed, a lot of work has been done to this point to get us ready for the festival.

I am very proud of all the work that has been accomplished by so many people under the leadership of our festival chairs, Joy and Doug Kornish. Now we need you to continue to get the word out about the festival through your own invitations to all your friends and family to come to the festival. If you are on Facebook, please friend us at St. Cecilia and pass on the posts to your friends. Indeed the most important ingredient in making a festival successful is that people are there—there to eat and drink our great selections of food and beverages, there to ride the additional rides coming for the kids, there to play the games, there to bid on an item, there to buy raffle tickets, there to buy an old table at the flea market, there to play bingo and Ducky Downs.

We need you! It is through you that this festival will be a great event.Amen? Amen!

A GOSPEL REFLECTION by Father Jason Williams

MATTHEW 10:37-42

“Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

T H E C O R N E R

Life is beautiful. It is by means of this gift that each of us receives the creative, generative,

selfless love of God as an essential element of our human nature. We were created by divine

love and for divine love; only God, in his essence, can satisfy the desires of our heart. That’s

because he created us for himself.

There are many things that God has bestowed on the world that each of us enjoy, and we find delight in these things to

the degree that they reflect God’s love and increase it within us. The joys of family life, the majesty of creation, the excite-

ment of momentous occasions and the beauty of the moments that make up our day – all of these are blessings from God,

given to us as a means to help us know him and experience his love. Those things that suffer the wounds of sin and evil may

temporarily delight us, but the speed with which that pleasure fades away is a stark reminder of the fact that they do not

possess the true goodness for which we were created.

Today Jesus summarizes this great truth, “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will

find it.” Our human life, given to us as the image of God himself, is fulfilled not by what things we can take for ourselves but

for those that we give of ourselves. This is contrary to the spirit of the world. On our own it would be impossible to mirror

the selfless love of God. Fortunately, God knows that and has blessed us with the grace of his divine life. May we pray that

we be preserved always in that grace!

We celebrate Latin Mass every Tuesday at 9AM. “The classical Roman Rite is an ambassador of tradition . . .” – www.onepeterfive.com

Through his Resurrection, did Jesus return to the physical, corporeal state that he had during his earthly life? The risen Lord allowed his disciples to touch him; he ate with them and showed

them the wounds of his Passion. Nevertheless, his body belonged no longer only to this earth, but rather to the heavenly

kingdom of his Father. [645-646]

The risen Christ, who bore the wounds of the Crucified, was no longer bound by space and time. He could enter

through locked doors and appear to his disciples in various places in a form in which they did not recognize him immedi-

ately. Christ’s Resurrection was, therefore, not a return to a normal earthly life, but rather his entrance into a new way of

being: “For we know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him”

(Rom 6:9). (YOUCAT question 107)

Meet the SaintsSt. Maria Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938)In the 1930s, Sr. Faustina received from

the Lord a mercy that she was told to

spread throughout the world. She was

asked to become the apostle and secretary

of God’s mercy. Her entire life, in imita-

tion of Christ’s, was to be a sacrifice — a

life lived for others.

Her special devotion to Mary Immaculate and to the

sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation gave her the

strength to bear all her sufferings as an offering to God on

behalf of the Church and those in need, especially great

sinners and the dying. She had taken deeply into her heart

God’s gospel command to “be merciful even as your heavenly

Father is merciful.” The message of mercy that Sr. Faustina

received is now being spread throughout the world. Her

diary, Divine Mercy In My Soul, has become the handbook for

devotion to the Divine Mercy. – www.franciscanmedia.org

God speaks in whispers and we live in a loud world. Hearing God’s voice amidst the noise and busyness of our lives can be difficult. But he is always there to guide and help us, and he has given us other people and resources to help us, as well. If you think God may be calling you to religious life and you need someone to talk to, please contact Fr. Dan Schmitmeyer, our Vocations Director, at (513) 421-3131, ext. 2890.

“Mary is the most tender mother of the human race; she is the refuge of sinners.” – St. Alphonsus Liguori

God truly blessed us last Sunday with a beautiful day, beginning with a moving Corpus Christi liturgy and Eucharistic procession led by Fr. Jason followed by a great afternoon picnic at Stricker’s Grove attended by over four hundred parishioners from our region. Here are some highlights of the day...

Worship CommissionEver wonder who performs the behind-the-scenes planning and decorating to help make our liturgies so reverent and beautiful? Of course, our priests and staff are involved in this work, but the parish is blessed to have an active Worship Com-mission, dedicated to ensuring our liturgies are thoughtfully executed. And we’re looking for some new members. You will deepen your faith, be a good steward, and work alongside other wonderfully dedicated parishioners. Please give some prayerful thought to becoming a part of this parish ministry. To learn more about the Worship Commission, contact Mark Milliron at [email protected] or call 513-536-6275.

One of the most precious freedoms we have as Americans is the religious liberty guaranteed by the First Amendment to our Constitution. Concerned about increasing threats to that freedom, the USCCB in 2012 launched a Fortnight for Free-dom observance from June 21, the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, to July 4, Independence Day. Sadly, our religious liberty is still under siege — in this country and around the world.

This year’s theme, “Freedom for Mission,” highlights the important fact that our God-given and constitutionally protected religious liberty is not restricted to our own minds or to houses of worship, as some government entities in our country have redefined it.

SMSJ Adult Ministry Series Join us on Tuesday, July 11, at 1 PM, in the St. Margaret-St. John cafeteria for the next installment in the SMSJ Adult Ministry series titled “How is Mercy Defined and What Do We Do to Be Merciful,” with Deacon Charlie Jenkins. Thursday, July 13, is the next opportunity to join us. One rosary will be recited along with hymns to our Lady.
