The Lithrone SX29 has a largersheet size of 610 x 750mm, pro-viding a maximum image areaof 585 x 740mm, which is 12.5 percentlarger than the LS29 models, and a sizethat ts the standard speci cation inseveral markets. This larger print areais also useful for multi-image layouts, such as labels, smaller cartons, phar-maceutical packaging, paperbackbooks, and DVD and CD covers.

The in-line cold foiling with the

Lithrone SX29 is a vastly higher speedalternative to expensive and slow off-line hot foiling. It widens the designoptions for metallic foiling, includ-ing the capability to print foil imagescontaining screens and transparentimages. It adds a new dimension to

production exibility, as the foil areais imaged on a standard offset platethrough any normal CTP system, andso enables on-demand single-passfoiling even on short run lengths.

The embossing unit replaces theneed for slow off-line processes andthe double handling of already printedsheets. Makeready is quick and easyand registration is close to perfect, asthe embossing is completed as a con-tinuation of the printing pass.

The LSX-629s in-line UV dryingand varnishing also provide the extraadded value of high gloss nishes, which can be enhanced even furtherwith the in-line die-cutting unit.

The in-line cold oiling system (above)on the LSX-629 is complemented byKomoris pioneering rotary die-cuttingembossing/debossing system to o erthe ultimate in high added valueproduction potential. The LithroneSX29 is also capable o straight six-color printing without the applicationo cold oil to meet the requirementso virtually any job.

The Lithrone SX40 has a newmaximum running speed of18,000sph. The new higherspeed fully automatic platechanging(Full-APC) with nonstop plate removalhelps increase the speed for job-to-jobchangeover, essential for busy printhouses handling various run lengths. The Lithrone SX40 changes six platesin less than two minutes. Along withKomoris new KHS-AI fast print startsystem, also launched at drupa, the

LSX40 enables a 35 percent reductionin job-to-job changeover time. To beprecise, from the end of production onone job to an OK sheet on the next jobtakes just 6 minutes!

The feeder on the new Lithrone SX40has been developed for higher speedand to optimize the bene ts of thenew KHS-AI fast print start system. Thefeeder board now requires no wheelsand has an independent motor notdriven by the press. Thus, sheet arrivaltiming can be adjusted electronically,

providing greater control now that thepress accelerates toward maximumspeed faster.

New features in printing unitsThe ink fountain has been strength-

ened and the cheeks are now madeof solid brass to ensure zero-set posi-tioning in all operating temperatures essential in order to maximizeKHS-AI.

    The fully automatic platechang-

ing system (Full-APC) is new nowenabling nonstop continuous plateremoval and reducing the changeovertime for six plates to two minutes. Thenew plate clamp has a plasma-coatedinternal surface that prevents platedeformation.

Changes in the delivery for precisehandling at higher printing speed

The delivery pro le is now higher, which increases coater, dryer andmaintenance access and means that

The six-color Lithrone SX29+CF+C+E with in-line cold foiling, in-line UV coating and in-line emboss-ing is the latest addition to the LS29 series.

The Lithrone SX40 is the next-generation agship in the Lithrone S40 series a strategic develop-ment creating new benchmark technology for the 40" market. Its history is detailed on pages 4043.

The Lithrone S40 SuperPerfector dedicated double-deck per-fector provides exceptionalfront-to-back color matching, andsaves pressroom space. At drupa, thefour-over-four Lithrone S40SP featuresthe launch of the new Komori PQA-S in-line Print Quality AssessmentSystem.

PQA-S creates a digital memory ofthe pass sheet, and then every subse-quent sheet is automatically compared

with the memorized data. The imageof any defective sheet is captured andinstantly shown on the PQA monitorincorporated into the press operation

console. The location and nature ofdefects and color variations outsidethe prede ned tolerances are alsoindicated on-screen. The defectsdetected include excess paper waste, ink splashes, water drops, oil and inkspots, and continuous hickeys.

No special application software isrequired because historical data islogged in XML format and referencedthrough a standard browser such asInternet Explorer. PQA-S is excep-

tionally accurate, being capable ofcapturing up to one million lines perminute laterally and detecting anydefects over one pixel.

The eight-color Lithrone S40perfector , featuring Komorisunique 3 x double-size perfect-ing mechanism, provides the drupalaunch pad for the new Komori Vid-eoscope monitoring system.

Videoscope enables real-time mon-itoring of the four most critical airzones through which the sheet passes. It provides on-the-run touchscreenadjustment and also incorporates vari-able slow-speed replay and recording

functions for detailed analysis. The Videoscope monitor is locatedat the delivery end of the press adja-cent to the new PQC-S console. It

considerably reduces unnecessaryand fatiguing operator movement andallows the operator to foresee andadjust for any changes in sheet passagethat may lead to press stoppages.

The four air zones shown on the split-screen monitor are: feeder, infeed, perfecting mechanism and delivery.

Both the LS-440SP and LS-840P atdrupa feature Komoris new presetair system, the operation of which isintegrated into the new PQC-S touch-

    F r a n c e

In 2007, for the rst time in the 51 years thatCCFI has honored excellence in printing, aprinter specializing in wine and spirits labelstook part in the competition. The French

printing house GIP not only participated forthe rst time in the contest but went on to winthe Cadrat dOr, the French Oscar for the mostoutstanding printing of the past year.

CCFI, the society of manufacturing directorsin the French printing and graphics industry, each year honors aesthetic and technicalexcellence in printing. This years award was areal surprise both for the jury and for RaymondMartinet, CEO of GIP in Libourne. As PascalLenoir, President of CCFI, explained when thetrophy was awarded on November 29, 2007,at the Maison de lAquitaine in Paris, Unlikeother competitions, the jurors do not consultwith each other but vote secretly. Clearly, they

were impressed with the quality and complex-ity of the techniques displayed by the GIPlabel.

    Coup dessai, coup de matre!

For Raymond Martinet, this award recognizeshard work, the best technology available andsheer artistry: A wine and spirits label is not just a small piece of paper. It is a demonstra-tion of technical boldness in striving for andachieving perfection. To understand the highlydeveloped skill required, take a look at one ofour award-winning masterpieces, the Olympiolabel, which we made for La Martiniquaise. Ona silvery metal-coated paper, we rst carryout offset printing on a Komori L-528 in white, black and a special gold. Then we carry out asecond printing with cream, black, light bistre, dark bistre and acrylic varnish. Finally, the labelis embossed and cut!

    Raymond Martinet, CEO

A passion for innovationThis award is the culmination of several

decades of passion for painstaking workthat has required daring investment. WhenRaymond Martinet took over GIP in 1972,he invested in Solna printing presses. Theyneeded to be replaced in 1989, and RaymondMartinet chose Komori after doing extensiveresearch. Why did I choose Komori? First, they offered competitive prices. But most ofall, they were the only ones on the market tooffer printing presses having the same cylin-der layout and the same dampening system. So GIP invested in two 2-color Lithrone 26presses with console and four single-colorSprints because four-color printing was rarein the wine industry at that time.

The jewels of the wine label marketThe well-equipped printer was now ready

to expand. When we began, the core ofour industry was the Bordeaux Right Banklabel. Since the 1980s, we have extendedour territory: to the jewels of the right bank Saint-Emilion, Pomerol, Fronsac and in theBergeracois (Dordognes Bergerac area), weadded the Buzet Winemakers, the Union of

Wine Producers of Plaimont and the FoncalieuVignobles. Another favorable factor was theextension of the vineyard to Entre Deux Mers, not far from our headquarters. In 30 years, thescenery has completely changed, going frommixed farming to grapevine. From 18 employ-ees in 1972, GIP extended its manpower to 100in 1995. GIP then acquired a four-color KomoriLithrone 28.

The companys great turning point was in2000. Because its facility was too cramped inthe middle of the city, GIP bought two hect-ares of land near the Bordeaux-Lyon highway. They built a 4,000 square meter state-of-the-art plant complying with environmentalstandards, including recovery tanks. GIP wasthe rst printing house in the southeast to get

involved in an eco-friendly civic movement, and was awarded the ImprimVert label at thebeginning of 2004.

High added value labels for great spiritsIt was also in 2000 that Raymond Martinet

decided to move toward the spirits market, aeld that favors traditional label production

techniques in order to maintain the pace ofbottling, unlike small operations using adhe-sive. GIP started working for Pernod Ricard,Marie Brizard and La Martiniquaise, interna-tional groups withvery high expectations andstrict controls at all stages. It was in order tomeet such high criteria and win over new mar-

kets that in November 2007 Martinet installedthe latest Komori model, an LS-529 with veprinting units, an acrylic coating unit and aPDC-SII. Martinet says: Due to its in-linespectrodensitometer, this press guaranteesthe coherence and uniformity of our print-ings. It is what we seek more than anything. But beyond that, with its registration speedand its very high level of automation, it offersconsiderable productivity gains.

Martinet explains his loyalty to Komori: LastAugust, one of our Lithrone presses brokedown. I called the technical manager allmanagers are directly reachable he sent ataxi that night and at 8 in the morning I hadmy component. At Komori, we are treated likefamily. And they never let you down, even ifyou only have one machine.

Gr ques Pac c came into being in theearly 1980s, taking over another printer andadopting the name of its home a street inBadalona called Pac c when the com-pany was acquired by one of its present-daymanagers.

The printer began with one small printing

machine, though 1996 brought substantialchange, ushering in the present structure ofthe company. Xavier Sala leads a team of 18in a 600 square meter facility. The men andwomen at Gr ques Pac c work on a three-shift schedule, operating two sheetfed offsetmachines, both from Komori. The rst ofthem, acquired around eight years ago, is a70 x 100cm LS40 with two print heads. Theother, more recently acquired, is a 5-unit 52x 74cm LS29 model. The distribution of bothmachines, along with the training and subse-quent technical service, was handled by OMC,S.A.E. The distributor is an advantage for our

rm, says Xavier, since theyre just around

the corner. They signed up for their second machine at

Graphispag 07: Some sales staff say that therst machine is only de nitively sold when the

client signs up for a second, Xavier says with asmile. The LS29 was of cially presented to themarket at IPEX 06 in England. Gr ques Pac c

examined the press closely at Komori-France,headquartered in Paris and the demonstrationcenter for Europe as a whole. Its performancewas compared with units from two othermanufacturers, but the company went for theLS29 because of its numerous automated fea-tures, their positive experience with their otherKomori press, and the high quality service pro-vided by OMC, S.A.E.

other companies that may have a larger rangeof presses available, including some offeringformats larger than 70 x 100cm, the answer isrevealing: Apart from quality, we take deliverydates and customer attention very seriously.Like many other companies, Gr ques Pac cis facing cut-throat price wars in the market, but they know what they are after: their workfocuses on the 52 x 74cm format, and theydeal with that work in their three-shift system.Xavier notes: Other similar companies work-ing two shifts say they have a hard time keepingthe machines busy.

As a businessman and graphics professional,Xavier acknowledges that there is overcapac-ity in printing, as noted in the symposiumsarranged by the local Printers Guild (El Gremi)at the Graphispag 07 show, and that it willget worse over the next three years since themachines coming out now are faster, change-over times are shorter, and the output per runis higher owing to the increasingly computer-ized printing systems. Wearing his practicalhat as the man in charge of the daily work atthe company, Xavier says that the outlook isindeed complex. It is vital to win customer loy-alty by giving good service with short deliverytimes. They can do that at Gr ques Pac cbecause they run three shifts and can rearrangetheir scheduling when ultra-urgent cases arise.Good service and good quality, at the rightprice, are the prerequisites for taking a share ofthe graphics market cake, Xavier says.

Gr ques Pac c is set in the middle of Bad-alona, just outside Barcelona. Its natural marketis the local and province-wide region, though jobs do come in sporadically from outside thatarea and even from the rest of Europe. The rmstands out because of its quality. Their postersprinted with the LS29 machine are eye-catch-ing, and the results con rm that the machinecan print on card stock and even apply a coatof varnish just after four-color printing, if thatis needed. So what exactly does the company

    do?Focus on core business: printing

Gr ques Pac cs graphics work coversa wide range of projects, says Xavier, as heshows us some of their work on exhibit in thereception area. Packaging, catalogs, lea ets, books, magazines and posters are displayed. The presence of the corporate images of somebanking rms stand out. Do they do creativework too? We can in fact do design work, saysXavier, though he points out that the advertis-ing agencies generally look after the creativeside. Gr ques Pac c tries to concentrateon its core business: printing. To do that, the

company has its own prepress section withCTP equipment and all the necessary extras, such as guillotines.

Delivering kando to Gr ques Pac cThe Japanese termkando , introduced by

Komori for the rst time at the IPEX 06 show, signi es beyond expectations. When askedif Komori and their team based here had pro-vided kando in the case of Gr ques Pac c,Xavier replies: We began with SalvadorRigola, for the rst machine. That convincedus, and we are happy with the performance ofthe machines and with the service as well.

And then we turn aroundand run at higher speeds. Were becomingmore pro table by turning out work faster andmore ef ciently.

As a new member to the Komori family, Tar-diff says the relationship has been very good:Komori is a very accessible organization. I canget in touch with everybody from the presidentof Komori America right down through theservice technicians. Whenever weve askedfor something, Komori has been right there.

Plus, its a testament to a company on how theyrespond when there are problems. Komori hasalways been there for us and helped us workthrough to a satisfactory resolution.

Tardiff realized that environmental concernswere becoming a hot button issue with print

JS McCarthy is 100 percent wind-powered,which has been a great selling tool for the com-pany: Weve secured jobs directly because wehave wind power. When were bidding againsttwo or three other companies, from an envi-ronmental standpoint, we have the decidedadvantage.

In addition, JS McCarthy has an extensiverecycling plan, recycling over 100 tons ofpaper and cardboard waste per month. Theyhave also made energy ef cient changes totheir facility, installing energy ef cient light-ing, compressors, and heating and cooling

systems. Tardiff says, The cost savings wererealizing makes it easy to make these changes. Our lighting alone has cut our energy billsigni cantly.

The company is also an early adopter of JDF.We started with our nishing equipment andhave seen some real bene ts. Its a learningcurve, but were committed to the process andwork very closely with EFI through our Hagen job management system to stay on track, saysTardiff. Its a work in progress.

Like most sheetfed printers in Europe, thetypical Norwegian sheetfed printer is a smallcompany. The largest, PDC Tangen, hasrecently grown considerably by merging inOctober 2007 with two other printing com-panies and one media company. The new 07Group comprises Krone Trykk, GAN Gra sk,GAN Media and PDC Tangen. Early this year

the group also acquired nishing specialistMathisen & Halvorsen AS.

Highly compatible, highly pro tableThe group, with a staff of approximately 200,

will have a turnover well above 350 millionNOK (45+ million). The merger created by farthe largest sheetfed operation in Norway. This

    07 Group, Norway

is a new situation in the Norwegian printingindustry, which previously consisted of smallerfamily-owned businesses.

The four companies joined forces in large partto create a business that is competitive on aninternational scale. Today it is large enough towithstand competition from outside Norway.

All four companies are pro table and, byserving different markets, the three printingcompanies are highly compatible: PDC Tangenspecializes in books and magazines; GAN Graf-isk supports the public and corporate sector;and Krone Trykk focuses on general commer-cial and retail print. Consequently, the newgroup has a broad and solid customer baseon which to build for the future.

The 07 Group today boasts a total of 59printing units in three different formats, plustwo varnishing units. Of these presses, Komorihas supplied 20 printing units and one varnish-ing unit.

A real workhorseThe present press lineup in the group is

dominated by the 70 x 100cm format, but PDCTangen also operates format 4 and 6 machines. In total the group boasts four Komori presses at

present. Three of these were installed in 2001.The two four-color 70 x 100cm machines atKrone Trykk (now 07 Krone) were equippedwith semiautomatic platechanging and wash-ing units. The Komori four-color Lithrone 40with varnishing unit at GAN Gra sk (now 07Oslo) is equipped with CIP3 technology, aPDC-S spectrodensitometer and the K-Color-Pro ler color management solution.

The newest of the Komori presses in the07 Group is a real workhorse. In 2005 PDCTangen invested in a four-color Lithrone 44SuperPerfector in size 4 format (82 x 115cm)to meet the demand for a major schoolbookreissue in Norway. Since then the 4/4 press hasbeen printing schoolbooks, most of the timeat rated speed and on 100 gms G-print stock. This has been a highly successful project forthe company.

Double-digit productivity increaseThe Komori SuperPerfector at PDC Tangen

is also integrated in the JDF-based networksolution of the company. The companyrecently won rst place in the Jrgen SchnhutMemorial CIP4 International Print ProductionInnovation (CIPPI) Awards for 2007, in the cat-egory Best cost/bene t realization as a resultof process automation implementation. The JDF network includes a Hi ex MIS system,Kodak Prinergy prepress work ow, sheetfedpresses from both Komori and Mitsubishi, and

folders from MBO.PDC Tangens rst fully automated order was

produced in June 2007. The bene ts were feltat every stage of production from MIS to n-ishing. With an ROI of 1847.2 percent, theirinvestment paid itself back 20 times in veyears. They also reported a 25 percent increasein productivity on their presses, a 15 percentincrease in productivity on their folders, and an overall increase of transparency, jobtracking, planning capabilities and exibility.Compared with 2005, PDC Tangen experi-enced a 20 percent increase in job turnoverafter implementing fully automated ordering.

Hvard Grjotheim, CEO of the 07 Group, says that it is more than likely that a larger partof the print production in the 07 Group will

nd its way through a Hi ex system than is thecase today, but this is part of the companysfuture production landscape.

The goal: streamlined productionThe 07 Group is still in its early stages and

there is a lot of work to do before maximumstreamlined print production is achievedthroughout the group. PDC Tangen has movedits design and sales of ce to 07 Oslo, and 07

Krone will relocate to 07 Oslo as well. TheGroup is evaluating its press con gurations atthe moment but has not yet decided on howmany printing units it will need for the future, although they will need to replace severalaging presses.

When the 07 Group makes its investmentdecisions, probably later this year, it willmost certainly make the headlines in theNorwegian trade press for what may well beNorways largest contract for sheetfed printingequipment ever.

    Courand, France

While some companies are still hesitant aboutimplementing JDF, others are taking bold stepsforward. One of them is Courand and Associ-ates Printing House in France. Founded in 1939by the father of Managing Director Jean-RenCourand, this family business has known out-standing progress. It now has 45 employeesand is about to expand its facility from 1,800to 4,300 square meters. The printing houseacquired its rst Komori in 1995, and added anLS-540+C and an L-440P perfector in 2004,and then an LS-529+C in 2006.

New LS-540 with coater and K-Stationensures seamless interfacing

In 2007, Jean-Ren Courand and DannRamstein, associate general manager, con-sidered buying an eight-color perfector inorder to replace the L-440P. To gain exibility, they eventually opted for a second ve-colorLithrone, an LS-540 with coater equippedwith PDC-SII and the JDF/CIP3 interface. Theirchoice revealed new development perspec-tives for the company: When we chose toinvest in this machine, we had already decidedupon implementing JDF. Komori France orga-nized several visits to Belgian printing housesworking with JDF. We saw that it was not sodif cult to set up.

    JDF era: conquering new markets

For Courand and Associates, 2008 will bea year of change: Everybody is talking about JDF, but few actually use it. We have decidedto implement it to maintain our progress andto improve our pressroom management, explains Mr. Ramstein. JDF allows reportingto the head of ce during all stages of a printing job, from the moment the salesman takes theorder to the moment of delivery to the cus-tomer. Considerable time is gained because itis no longer necessary to go shing for infor-mation. The technicians have all the necessarydata to process the job, we can nd out howmuch time they spend at each stage, and wecan verify if the job is pro table. We can thusinform our clients of prices that are closest toreality. Step by step, the Courand and Asso-

Web offset printing is changing the land-scape of the presses deployed in the industryand empowering this business, thanks chie yto modern technologies that assist the pressoperators.

A recent tour of Punto Web Srl, a printingcompany based in Ariccia, near Rome, offersnot only a look at the modern printing marketbut also a glimpse of printing in the near future. The plant, managed by brothers Mario andMaurizio Farina, is a formidable example oflayout optimization and work ow ef ciency.Three presses one 10-color sheetfed 5-over-5 perfector and two web offset presses,a 64-page and a 16-page show how themachines are evolving.

First of its kind in ItalyMost impressive is the 16-page web press: a

full-spec Komori 38S, the most accessorizedmachine ever installed in Italy. Mario Pellegrini,

Punto Webs factory manager and co-found-ing partner, led a tour of the plant, which wasbuilt in 2003 and has been in operation sincemid-2006. The facility covers 183,000 squarefeet and employs 110 people, with the print-ing room running three shifts, from Mondayto Saturday. In spite of the immense spaceavailable, each corner has been exploitedoptimally by setting up a complete work owpath, from prepress to nishing with stackersand automatic palletizers, to keep produc-tion steps separate and jobs orderly. In otherwords, no space is wasted. Clearly the planthas been designed by people who have mas-tered web printing.

Production is carried out on two oors. Theupper oor accommodates the imagesettingdepartment, which is equipped with six Mac

workstations and a large-format VLF Creo CTPunit operating a Prinergy ow that handles250 plates a day. The ground oor housesthe web presses and the sheetfed press. Thisis Punto Webs heart, a center that performsapproximately 500 makereadies each month, still only a part of the companys potentialproductivity.

The main attraction here, the 16-page ve-color Komori System 38S, is equipped withprecisely the features Punto Web requiresto deliver quality products: a ying splicer,an automatic platechanger, an ink fountainadjustment feature, a CIP3 connection, anautomatic blanket washing system, an inte-grated hot-air drying unit, a gluing device, acompletely automated folder unit for up to50 different fold types, and a format cutter forthe sheet exit. The overall speed of the press isanother major advantage the press is capa-ble of up to 50,000cph.

Mr. Pellegrini explained that their purchaseof this Komori press over the competition wasdictated by this speci c con guration as wellas other technical and commercial reasons. The initial technical decisions were made atdrupa 2004 when Punto Webs managementactually saw the System 38S in operation.Komori Italia also helped considerably in thedecision process.

    Komori On Press

200,000 catalog covers an hour The rst technical factor we looked at

was platechanging system ef ciency, saysPellegrini. This Komori press automaticallychanges all plates for a complete job change-over in less than ve minutes. We witnesseda job changeover from a commercial catalogcover to a 1/16th print. The changeover time including washing, platechanging and foldchanging took less than 15 minutes. Theprinting of the catalogs 200,000 covers tookapproximately one hour from the OK sheet.

Another signi cant point in favor of thisKomori press is that double parallel, tabloid, cross, delta, quarto and octavo folds, eitheropen on the leading edge or closed, are alloutput to only one monoscale exit, saysPellegrini. This means that there is only a

single collection point for the pagination. Allcompetitor presses for the same type of jobsneed three different collection points, whichof course requires additional plant space andincreased costs.

And Pellegrini adds: As of today, and consid-ering that the press has been in operation onlya few months, the technical and economicalbreak-even point is 10,000 copies per runwhen compared to the 10-color press. How-ever, this gure can certainly move down to8,000 copies once the operators becomemore familiar with it.

Another advantage this press has over thecompetition is straightforwardness, saysPellegrini. Operations are graphically driven, which allows an experienced web operatornot only to master the press in a very short timebut also to easily solve issues that arise duringdaily operation. We witnessed this duringthe operator training, which was completedin only one week but ensured that we couldoperate the press easily and competently, adds Pellegrini.

This System 38S is equipped with two foldersconverging into a single exit for the immedi-ate transfer of the printed sheets, and a griptransportation device. When necessary, thisdevice rotates the sheets by 90 degrees topresent them to the nal part of the line alongthe spine rather than the side, thus avoidingproblems that might occur without this rota-

tion. A closer look at the press reveals that thereare actually ve folding units: two cone foldersplus cutting for covers, two 8-page folders andone 16-page folder.

Standard protocol mattersThe press is also equipped with data acqui-

sition devices based on CIP4 and standard JDF protocols, although at the moment thecompany is not using this installed capabil-ity. Punto Web is especially pleased that thepress can use the standard CIP4/JDF proto-col. In fact, Komori is the only manufacturerthat uses this protocol instead of a custom-ized JDF protocol, thus allowing the clientspress to communicate with other presses inthe work ow.

With the System 38S, Punto Web can

respond effectively and rapidly to a market thatincreasingly demands a better quality/priceratio and at the same time shorter and shorterruns, says Pellegrini. With this machine wecan print and nish 200,000 covers in slightlymore than one hour, including makereadyand washing. Thus we are positioned to meetmarket expectations. What is important todayis how much time makeready and press wash-ing can save in addition to the savings we gainthrough the presss automation features.

Kando Italian-stylePunto Web has experienced rsthand the

Komori philosophy underlying the System 38S to deliver the best quality product possibleby means of a highly automated, high-speedpress with rapid turnaround. Punto Web choseto replace their 8-color sheetfed press withthe 10-color press, which will be used for verysmall runs, for printing on heavier stocks thatthe web press cannot handle, and also as back-up machine should the web press encounterproblems.

When asked what else they expect fromthe System 38S, Pellegrini replied that all oftheir expectations had been met. Our deci-sion to choose Komori has been extremelypositive the System 38S has enhanced ourcapabilities to a degree we had not imagined, says Pellegrini.

changeovers yet always maintains high qualityand consistency.

A matter of consistencyChoosing to install a Komori every time is

a matter of operational convenience in addi-tion to factors of proven quality and reliability.By always working on the same type of press, operators can easily move from one machineto another. Thus their work is smoother and

production proceeds more uently, con-cludes Quadrio.

quality performance and productivity than itspredecessor. But a constant feature of thesemachines was the 4- or 5-color con guration, which Gra che Parole Nuove chose for ex-ibility and suitability to its production. Themainspring of our loyalty to Komori pressesis their mechanical and electronic reliability.Even after years of work and millions and mil-lions of printed sheets, our Komori presseskeep printing as if they had just been installed.

The only reason we keep replacing them withnewer ones is our tenacious commitment toalways having technologically superior pressesso that we can maintain ever-increasing pro-ductivity levels.

Mr. Quadrio continues: We consider it amust for our printing shop to install only full-spec presses. In fact, for all the presses weveinstalled, we chose all the available options togive them the highest level of automation. Thereason behind this is my belief that withoutfully automated presses, you cannot harnesstheir full potential, and this translates into lossof time, and hence loss of pro tability.

To each one its KomoriTodays press eet in the Brugherio company,

in the Milan area, consists of two 72 x 103cmS series long machines, 5 and 4 colors respec-tively. Gra che Parole Nuove was the rstItalian printing company to purchase a KomoriS series model. Of these two presses, the mostrecently installed is a full-spec 4-color 2+2Lithrone S40P with spectrodensitometer. Thecompany chose this con guration becauseof its perfect suitability to their production,in particular the presss versatility duringperfecting, which accounts for nearly 70 per-cent of their work. The variety of paper stocksthat the company handles does not intimi-date the S40Ps perfecting capability. And thepress is very quick to respond to continuous

Technologically advancing while maintain-ing the aesthetic of printing as art. The artof conceiving a product from start to nishby examining all possible criteria and everystep involved in creating high quality printedmaterials. This is how Gra che Parole Nuovesummarizes their 30 years of experience inprinting.

The company started in 1976 as an image-setting shop. When pro tability in this type ofbusiness started to fall, Gra che Parole Nuoveacquired a 4-color offset press, set up a nish-ing facility to obtain binding-ready printedmaterials, and became a full- edged printingcompany. The existing prepress department, which has been fully modernized, contributesto its one-shop solution. Today the companyhas developed into a more complete print-ing house by adding a variety of activitiesrelated to graphical arts. These include anadvertising agency specializing in trade faircatalogs, a retail bookshop, and nishingand binding operations.

The fusion of tradition and innovationOur relationship with Komori dates back

to the beginning of our printing activity, saysGiancarlo Quadrio, CEO of Gra che ParoleNuove. Since our inception, and moreprecisely when we bought the rst 5-colorautomatic Komori in Italy, we have been veryaware of the high potential of Komori presses. As a matter of fact, when other manufactur-ers were still working primarily to improve themechanical side of their presses, Komori wasalready offering state-of-the-art, absolutelyreliable electronic technology. Proof of thiswas the ready availability of potential purchas-ers for our second-hand presses even whenthe counter showed several tens of millions ofcopies. These machines were in fact consid-ered technically equivalent to any press fromthe competition, even though the others were10 years newer.

to us with regard to ever shorter deadlinesand ever smaller print runs, and Komori reallymanaged to impress us. These presses havebeen automated all the way; the interfacealmost looks like a printer. The pressmen willmore and more become process operators, focusing mainly on control of the automatedprinting process and less on control of themachine itself.

A coating unit has been added to the LS-529press at the Groups Arnhem location, becauseof a very speci c portfolio. The other threeKomori presses have been installed at Gron-ingen, IJsselstein and Nijmegen.

Printing without perfecting At the Nijmegen plant Thieme also installed

a four-color Lithrone S40SP, Komoris B1 pressthat outdid its competitors simply by its SPconcept. An absolutely unique concept, says Van der Wind. Printing both sides ofthe paper without the need for perfecting thesheets saves you a lot of problems in qual-ity. Our Lithrone S40SP started printing threeweeks ago, and took off really very well. TheSP press is being used speci cally for print-ing periodicals in double-sided full color: In

this segment, customers want us to use everthinner paper. That makes perfecting at highspeeds, despite all modern technology, moreand more dif cult. With our LS-440SP, there isno perfecting, so you can keep printing at highspeed. The LS-440SP at Nijmegen replacestwo eight-unit perfecting printing presseswhich, says Van der Kallen, never lived up toexpectations.

After installing the range of Komori presses, the Thieme Group has probably now reachedthe limits of reducing the number of print-ing units, says Van der Kallen. Van der Wind, however, will continue to work on ef ciencyby further standardizing and optimizing pro-cesses and portfolios.

Hour by hour monitoringInvesting in new machines at the Thieme

Group is always part of a bigger plan. Decisionsare based on constant benchmarking withinthe Group, taking wishes and requirements ofall locations into account. Van der Kallen says:We can, almost by the hour, monitor utiliza-tion of our total capacity. Every week, we have acomplete record of every device at every plantthroughout the entire group, so we know whatis happening all the time. In Holland, thats apretty unique position to be in. And Van derWind adds: Everything is being registeredby interconnected MIS systems, giving us anoverview of time needed for makeready, for

production for everything. Thanks to this central moni-toring, we can keep workingto always further optimizeour processes. And becauseof constant benchmarkingwithin the group, some ofour locations are alreadystarting to specialize, saysVan der Wind.

    We choose todo things ourselves

Every client has the right to always get thebest offer for his job. But a printing houseprinting only B2 format will always try to sella B2 solution. No matter what. The ThiemeGroup is trying to move away from that. Weare becoming an organization that focusesmore and more on sales, not on production. Our salespeople are not trying to sell a speci csize or format they are trying as best they canto help our clients with their printing needs.

To make this focus on sales a reality, theThieme Group has to maintain a broad rangeof production equipment, both in printingand nishing. Van der Kallen explains: We

choose to do things ourselves as much aspossible. We dont like to depend on othercompanies, delivering too late or not at all.We want to decide on when and where our-selves, at all times. Especially in the near futurewith JDF data, it would be a waste to end uptaking your production elsewhere to be n-ished. Van der Wind adds: JDF has our fullattention. Were currently working on threeprojects with different suppliers, and at thismoment its really up to them to come up withthe right solutions.

A whole Komori familyIntroducing Komori presses at the Thieme

Group has been a success. Of course, the press operators have to adapt. But, forexample, the people that used to work theeight-unit perfecting presses at Nijmegen arealready very enthusiastic about the qualityand the ease of use of the LS-440SP, says Vander Wind. And Van der Kallen notes that theThieme Group owns two Komori heatset webpresses as well, after incorporating Dutch TijlOffset (Zwolle) last year: Actually, we alreadyhave a whole Komori family at Thieme.

Thieme Group, one of the biggest players inthe graphics media market in The Netherlands(more than 30 companies employing over1,200 people) with a turnover of some 200million, has invested close to 20 million sinceearly last year. An all time high, according toCEO Mark van der Kallen, causing an all timepremiere as well. We have, for the very rsttime in our group history, invested in brandnew Komori presses. The Thieme Groupdecided on a total of four LS-529 presses andone LS-440SP. Kees van der Wind, ManagerOperations Thieme Group, explains: Werealways looking for more ef ciency. And thepeople at Komori understand efficiencyvery well.

As the Thieme Group keeps expanding, Vander Kallen has set out on a very clear strategyof investments: We want to keep everythingup to date, as you simply need good equip-ment to stay ahead of competition, both in

quality and in pricing. But at the same time, wewant to be able to produce the same amountof output using fewer machines.

Komori won us overAfter extensive analysis, Thieme Group chose

to install four new Komori LS-529 machinesfor its midsized work. Van der Wind says: Inthis category, we work mostly with Heidelbergand MAN Roland. But, for the rst time ever,we decided to give Komori a serious chanceas well. We asked several suppliers to comeup with a con guration that would meet ourrequirements, mainly focusing on time-savingsduring makeready, overall automation andproduction speed, but also on special optionslike alcohol-free printing and energy savings.During our visits to the suppliers, we also didsome test runs on various machines. Komoriabsolutely won us over by the way they under-stand automation. That is an important thing T h

October 23, 2007 is a date that will be embla-zoned in gold in the history of the Aries Group. The launch of its new facility prompted a tre-mendous display of affection and friendshipfor its executives during a gala staged to markthe occasion.

One press and great ambitionAntonio Martn Ramrez, the founder of

what is today the Aries Group, recalled thebeginnings of the company, known in 1974as Gr cas Aries. The printer was located ina small workshop, as start-ups often are, inMadrids Matilde Hernndez Street, with justone small machine, but staffed by people fullof enthusiasm, hope and ambition. Their aimwas to use offset technology to print all kindsof graphic products including catalogs, bro-

chures, books and displays. Just ve years later, the companys marked

growth forced the rst move to more spaciouspremises. The next relocation came eight yearslater, with a move to workshops that broughta considerable boost to the rms productioncapacity.

The business vision of Antonio Martn Coello, son of the founder, led to the setting up of anew company, Gr cas Al l. Although it oper-ated from the same premises as Gr cas Aries, the new company was completely autono-mous. Then in 1996, with both companies wellestablished in the market and total yearly salesstanding at over 500 million pesetas, a thor-ough reorganization merged the productiontechnologies, the workforce, the premises andthe sales departments of both Aries and Al l,

Aries adds eight-color LithroneThe most recent relocation came in 2000

with the move to the current site in Pinto, which

has now been enlarged and reorganized. Lastyears celebration marked the opening of theexpanded facility and also the commission-ing of an eight-color Komori Lithrone S40Pperfector from OMC, the company represent-ing Komori in Spain, and the start-up of newequipment in the binding department.

The founder of the Aries Group expressed hisgratitude to all the clients, friends and suppliersin attendance: Seeing so many familiar facesand so many friends, my mind goes back to1974 when the Gr cas Aries adventure startedout. Today, 33 years later, as I open this facil-ity in the company of all who have helped meso much over so many years, I would like torepeat my warmest thanks to you all, extendingmy gratitude to the Mayor of Pinto and to theKomori executives who are here today.

Mayor recognizes work of private initiative

This highly emotional and meticulously pre-pared event was attended by the Mayor ofPinto, Miriam Rabanero, who went on to show just how much her governing team appreciatedthe work of private initiative, such as Gr casAries, in boosting jobs, ensuring progress andcreating added value in the Pinto area. Today, standing out from all others and investing con-tinually are critical factors for success in thebusiness world. The graphic arts industry inparticular is highly competitive, and the com-

mitment shown by Gr cas Aries is rm andclearafter all, you are backed by 30 years ofexperience. She wound up by offering theassistance of the Council she represents inachieving the objectives of the Aries Group.

One of the key points in the evolution of the

Aries Group is the importance attached tomaintaining a highly specialized team that getsinvolved in every project. Vocational trainingand retraining is undertaken constantly inorder to keep the staffs skills fully up to date,so as to better understand clients needs and

    nd ways of meeting them.

To say that the Germancompany Sigma in Steinfurt-Borghorst, Westphalia, wassimply a printer would not do justice to this full-service pro-vider. Besides the LS-529, there are several othermulticolor machines in different sizes, butnone is as productive as the Lithrone. Withnonstop production in two shifts ever sinceinstallation, the LS-529 has produced 1.8million copies in just 10 months. Founded in 1979, PJ-Trykks initial means ofproduction was a two-color Sprint, and typicalsmall-format printed matter such as letter-heads, forms and lea ets accounted for the

bulk of its output. In 1997 the company saw

    PostPrint, Russia

PostPrint is unusual in thatits origins were in providing awide range of creative nishingservices. We can ful ll mostcomplicated nishing tasks tooffer a true added value ser-vice, says Boris Levitsky, printdirector. Having acquiredsuf cient nishing technol-ogy, we started contemplatingbuying a printing press anddecided from the start that

our press should be multipurpose, and ableto print with both conventional and UV inks.We primarily needed a press to print sophis-ticated promotion materials and packaging, and that called for special requirements in thepress design.

PostPrint was extremely careful in the press

selection process. Explains Levitsky: We were

very much impressed by the trip to NovaCardin Nizhny Novgorod arranged by YAM Inter-national. There we saw a Komori ve-colorLithrone 26 that had printed over 100 millioncopies on plastic with UV inks, and was stillproducing very high quality. So we decided ona Komori.

A Komori ve-color Lithrone S29 press withcoater and UV dryer has recently been installedand the results are very satisfying. The mainadvantages lie in the ability to print with bothconventional and UV inks and the availabilityof the coating unit. This combination allows usto print four-color jobs with added value, saysLevitsky. We will focus on added value jobswhere added value is achieved by the use ofsophisticated coatings and nishing, printingon special materials, and performing varioustechnical processes in-line on one press.

Serbias Politika a.d. may have historic rootsbut it is looking rmly at the future boostedby its third Komori web press investment insix years. Bullish on the futureThe market in Serbia is developing rapidly.

In 2007 Serbia consumed around 35 kilos percapita of printing paper, about one tenth ofWestern Europes consumption. Economicprojections suggest that this gure will riserapidly in coming years. And Politikas strategyis to be ready for this increase by staying aheadof the market and by increasing production

gered the decision to invest in a third web press. The latestKomori web a 32-page Komori System 38D goes live shortlyand is expected to increase production capacity by 70 percent. The increased capacity increases exibility and opens up newmarkets for us we expect to increase our export business as adirect result, says General Manager Zoran Vacic.

Only a short drive from Belgrade, Politika occupies a 22,000square meter facility and employs almost 400 staff, includingeditorial. Last year turnover was just over 20 million. Expan-sion is occurring on all fronts more space has been addedand new staff will be recruited to support its growth.

Politika uses its Komori webs to print books, catalogs, maga-zines, brochures and a variety of advertising material as well asPolitikas own publications:Ilustrovana politika, Bazar , Politikin zabavnik , Huper , Ana, Enigmatika, Razbibiriga , Viva, and Svet kompjutera . Seventy percent of production is for contract cli-ents. The company currently prints 60 magazines for contractclients and expects this number to grow signi cantly with thearrival of the new press.

Komori the logical choiceSrdjan Markotic, deputy general manager,

comments, We decided on Komori becauseweve had good experience with their presses, particularly with regard to maintenance andtraining. Weve always been happy withKomori machines because of their cleanimpression and the low level of waste atstart-up.

The addition of a 32-page Komori System 38has tremendous bene ts for Politika, signify-ing a new era in growth for the company. Theshift to 32-page rotation is bene cial becauseit brings an increase in ef ciency and rate ofproduction. By doubling sheet size, Politikahas cut binding time for hardcover productionby 50 percent, resulting in considerable sav-ings. The System 38 also requires less bindingstations in the nishing stage, thus reducinglabor costs. The new equipment also allowsPolitika to offer new products such as 24-sheetand 32-sheet rotoglued.

Bene ts of interchangeable16- and 32-page reels

The interchangeability of 16- and 32-pagereels has two immediate cost benefits, explains Markotic. First, it allows us to negoti-ate better bulk discounts on paper productionand reduce handling costs. The second bene tis that it allows greater exibility, for instanceprinting 48-page products with one 16-pageand one 32-page run.

Politika is evolving its operations on allfronts. Alongside the new web, the printer hasinvested almost 700,000 in a completelynew prepress work ow and a number of n-ishing machines, and 1.2 million in a newhardcover production line.

Over one hundred industry guests were onhand at Fergies Print & Mail in Brisbane tousher in Australias rst new Komori LS-540SP the SuperPerfector.

Also in attendance fromKomori Corporation were Toshiyuki Tsugawa, group general manager, Kazunori Saitoh, group general manager of the technical group, and Fumihiko Takahashi, assistant manager ofexports for Asia-Paci c, known affectionatelyto his many Australasian contacts as Bazza.

Fergies has been a Komori customer formore than six years, working through thelocal Komori agent CPI. The printer thor-oughly researched its decision to invest in

On his way to IPEX last year, Fergusonstopped off in Japan and visited Komoris newplant at Tsukuba, where he saw the KomoriLS-540SP go through its paces. His impres-sions on the Komori stand at IPEX and after theshow at some British sites further con rmedhis impressions. The clincher was a return visitto Tsukuba in October.

Ferguson is very impressed with thetechnology of the Komori 40" LithroneSuperPerfectors one-pass printing technol-

ogy, which does away with front/back printquality variation. As a gripper margin is nec-essary for only one end of the sheet, costsare reduced and marking and scuf ng are nolonger a problem. Such improved quality isdue also to Komoris cylinder con guration, which requires no transfer cylinder betweenprinting units, and Komoris belt-guided sheettransfer mechanism.

Same imposition as straight LithronesA logistical advantage of the SP that helped

win Ferguson over is that the press can be runwith the same page imposition as his straightmachines. So when it is time to allocate platesto the press after they are generated by Fer-gies Fuji Luxel CTP setter, the plates can goon the perfector or on the Komori straightpresses on a rst ready basis, with size andplate punches tting, thus saving much timeand money.
