Welcome, players! We’re so glad you’ve joined us for the 27th season of the FIRST ® Robotics Competition. Is your team ready to press start on this year’s arcade-themed game, FIRST ® POWER UPSM?

What you’ve accomplished in a short six-week build season is truly inspiring. By playing FIRST POWER UP, you’re not just demonstrating your ability to build a robot for this year’s challenge; you’re unlocking achievements that will stay with you for your entire life:

• Teamwork – You’ve worked with your teammates and mentors to communicate ideas, solve problems, negotiate tasks, and overcome glitches. Your high-level collaboration inspires many of the adults who support you. You’ve demonstrated that through Coopertition® we can all build, learn, and succeed together.

• Gracious Professionalism® – As a part of the FIRST ® community, you’re learning the benefits of producing high-quality work, demonstrating respect for individuals and community, and valuing others. Gracious Professionalism also includes expressing gratitude to the people who make FIRST possible for you. If you haven’t recently, take the time to sincerely thank your mentors, volunteers, sponsors, family, and many other supporters.

• STEM Literacy – You’ve demonstrated a passion and drive for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Even if you haven’t directly designed, coded, or built your team’s robot, you’re learning to speak the language of STEM, solve problems, and think critically. These valuable skills will help you find employment in any field.

• Inspiration – From your teammates, you’ve learned the power of creativity and collaboration. From your mentors, volunteers, and sponsors, you’ve gained self-confidence and learned many ways your skills can be channeled into fulfilling careers. From creating your robot, you’ve learned perseverance. Draw from this inspiration as you tackle life’s challenges.

• Scholarships – By participating in FIRST, you’ve unlocked access to more than $50 million in scholarships from nearly 200 generous FIRST Scholarship Providers. We’re grateful that so many understand the value students who have participated in FIRST programs bring to colleges and universities.

• FIRST Alumni – After you graduate high school, the FIRST Alumni Network will be your connection to FIRST and to your peers. It’s also how you can stay involved with FIRST. Your help is critical to making FIRST available for every student who comes after you.

Congratulations! With those achievements unlocked, you’re already a champion. After all, you’re playing the only sport where every kid can go pro.

Best of luck to all teams. It’s time to play for real!

Imagine a world where robots and science-loving teens changed the world — or at least an entire university campus. For one weekend this April, you and your teammates will reign supreme at McMaster University and bring your 8-bit-inspired robots to our home. You and your mentors, parents and teammates have spent months preparing for this FIRST Robotics Canada season and for the McMaster University-hosted FIRST Robotics Canada District competition. We’re hoping your hard work pays off this weekend. Good luck!

McMaster University is thrilled to host this FIRST Robotics District competition. We want to extend a warm welcome and invite you to explore our world — a top-ranked, internationally recognized institution where students and professors come together everyday to meet technology and science challenges.

It’s also a welcoming, diverse place with tons of community spirit and camaraderie — just like the team building spirit that is at the heart of every successful FIRST team. If you see someone wearing a fireball— the official symbol of McMaster Engineering — this weekend, don’t be afraid to say hello or ask a question. Consider yourselves part of the extended #FireballFamily.

Many of our FIRST student volunteers were just like you once — FIRST Canada competitors— and many of them have gone on to study engineering at McMaster. If you want to learn more about the FIRST alumni who are now McMaster Engineering students, check out their stories on our website: firstroboticsmcmaster.ca.

We’re also excited to announce that we’re offering six FIRST Robotics scholarships for graduating students participating in FRC.

And yes, we’ve embraced the 8-bit arcade theme. Stay tuned for our 8-bit-themed game app, characters, Snapchat filters, stickers and more this weekend.

It’s no secret that the world needs talented young minds to meet the global grand challenges facing our world. Issues ranging from water quality to eradicating disease to building the next generation vehicle must be addressed. Future leaders like you are needed to meet these challenges by using critical thinking skills, ingenuity and ambition; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) skills that FIRST Canada is helping you to develop.

We’re excited to host the next generation of engineers, scientists and technologists who will change the world at McMaster University with their #BigIdeas. We wish you the best of luck in the competition this weekend. Rule the world, FIRST teams.

The 2018 Game Description and Scoring

FIRST ® POWER UPSM, the 2018 FIRST ® Robotics Competition game, finds our teams trapped in an 8-bit video game world! Teams use power cubes to defeat the boss. Each three-team alliance has three ways to help defeat the boss:

• Owning the scale or their switch. Ownership occurs when the scale or alliance’s switch is tipped in their favor. Robots collect and deliver power cubes to gain ownership.

• Playing power ups. Alliances exchange power cubes for power ups. Power ups provide a timed advantage during the match. There are three power ups that can be played: Force, Boost, and Levitate.

• Climbing the scale tower. Robots work together to climb the scale tower to face the boss and try to escape the game.

Autonomous Period:Robots operate independently following preprogrammed instructions for the first fifteen seconds of the match.

Alliances score points by:

• Reaching their own autonomous line

• Gaining ownership of the scale or their alliance’s switch

Teleoperated Period:Operators take control for the final two minutes and fifteen seconds of the match.

Alliances continue to score points by:• Gaining ownership of the scale or their alliance’s switch

• Delivering power cubes to the alliance’s vault

• Using power ups for a timed advantage

• Parking on the scale platform or climbing the scale to face the boss

The alliance with the highest score at the end of the match defeats the boss and wins.
