2 Installation

Generally, Onyx Ceph™ can be used in a local network (LAN). For that, all files for commonuse have to be installed on a PC that represents the so-called file-server. This Server-Installation can be done via CD-R or by means of the install setup that wasdownloaded from the Internet.

To use Onyx Ceph™ on any client-PC, a Client-Installation has to be performed there tomanage all required local software settings. This is done by searching the program file path ...\OnyxServer on the server-PC via local network (LAN) and executing the fileOnyxClientSetup.exe. Also the server-PC itself can be used as client.

To install and use Onyx Ceph™ only locally, server and client installation have to beperformed on a single PC.

An Onyx Ceph™ installation can be updated anytime via CD-R or Internet. To do so, thecurrent install-CD has to be inserted into the CD-R drive of any Onyx Ceph™ client PC thatis connected to the server and run menu item Server Update. In that, all required files will beupdated in the whole LAN.

Hint:To install or update Onyx Ceph™ properly, you must have read/write access on theserver-PC.

2.1 Overview

It is recommended to establish a concept for the use of the software within the practicebefore installation of the trial version in order to prevent unnecessary un- and reinstallationand loss of time and possibly data.

Fundamentally it must be defined

(a) on which PC the Onyx database server should run, (b) on which PC the Onyx database should lie and (c) on which PCs the software should be used.

It goes without saying that, alternatively to a Client/Server installation spread over the localnetwork of the user, a local installation at only one PC or notebook is possible.

Even the trial version should be installed in the configuration required later, so that theevaluations of the trial period stay available after registration. If no registration is desired thecomplete installation can be removed from the server and all client PCs by the accessoryuninstallation program of the program group Onyx.

Step 1: Installation of the Server Software

· Insert the installation CD into the computer that should be used as practice server. Thesame computer can also serve as workstation so that setup at a single PC can be done inthe same way. If your disk drive supports the AutoRun function the install menu willappear on the desktop after a few seconds, otherwise start the file InstallMenu.exe fromthe main path of the CD manually.

· Select the menu point Onyx Ceph Installation. Read the license agreement attentively andgo on by the help of the appropriate button.

· If a version of Onyx Ceph® has already been installed on that computer you can decidewhether to maintain or to update this version in the following dialog.

· For installation at another than the present position, the previous version has to beuninstalled by Start|Settings|System Control|Software. In addition please make sure thatthe file Onyx.ini has been deleted in the Windows directory.

· If Onyx Ceph® is installed for the first time you can select the directory for the installationin the next window. You may accept the suggested path or define another position by thehelp of the browse button [...].

· After all files have been decompressed and copied into the defined directory installation issuccessfully completed.

· Now you can start to set up a network station at the same or at another computer orcomputers of the local network at which the software should be used.

Step 2: Setup of Network Stations

· Click OK in the dialog Client Setup to set up a workstation at the practice server or startthe file OnyxClientSetup.exe of the path OnyxServer of the server at each computer thathas to be set up as workstation. There is no limit for the number of stations but you can doevaluations at maximum five computers at the same time.

· The files required at the workstation are set up by the usual Windows routine. You canselect the directory again.

· At the end of the installation the computer has to be restarted. After that the Onyxshortcuts are installed in the directory and on the desktop and the configuration programOnyx Config is started. The suggested directories can be accepted or changed if required.

Closing the dialog finishes the setup and Onyx Ceph™ can be started at the workstation. Please note that Onyx Ceph™ can only be used when the program OnyxDBServer isrunning, that manages the database tables. When Onyx is started for the first time you are asked to start the relevant server (locally or

LAN). The registration is done relating to the server program OnyxDBServer. The use ofOnyx Ceph™ as registered version therefore requires a connection to the registered server. These settings may also be edited and adjusted after the program start by the menu itemOptions|Onyx Server. That also applies for the available start options of the server program.

3 Interfaces

All Onyx software components can be used independently of the installed practicemanagement program. The component Onyx View as patient and image database besidemany functions for image processing/ -enhancement and image storing offers the possibilityto assign patients to their images and findings by their number (or other master-data) easilyand clearly.

For effective use of Onyx in the dental practice or clinic integration into the practicemanagement program is useful. Onyx supports integration in several ways according to therequirements of the practice:

For frequently used Windows management software defined interfaces for mutual dataexchange with Onyx are provided, that can be configured in the item Options|ExternalPrograms.

In addition several dental and clinical standards are supported. Patient data can be directlytaken over from the management modules of the digital image sources (e.g. mailslot system[Sidexis], clipboard [Gendex, Soredex])

3.1 Practice Management

3.1.1 Onyx PMS Interface

The internal Onyx Ceph™ PMS interface permits the exchange of patient master data andfinding results with third party patient- and image management applications.

For activating the data exchange between Onyx Ceph™ and the used patient managementprogram the interface has to be implemented in the practice management softwareaccording to the description in subtopic Interface Implementation and corectly configured bythe user as described in subtopic Interface Configuration.

3.1.1.1 Interface Implementation

This section contains technical information how to implement the Onyx Ceph™ PMS Interfacein a Practice Management Software and may be helpful for software developers. The Onyx Ceph™PMS Interface can be used free of charge according to the description given in the topics

· Preface· Module Calls· Results· Image Files

Hint:The interface is provided "as is", and no representation or warranty, expressed or implied, including, without limitation, any warranty of merchantability or of fitness for a particularpurpose whatsoever is made regarding the interface. No warranty is made that the interfacewill perform without interruption or free from errors. In no event IMAGE INSTRUMENTS will be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, specialor consequential damages arising from or caused by use of, reliance on, or inability toaccess and use any information provided via the interface, even if user has been previouslyadvised of the possibility of such damages or losses.

3.1.1.1.1 Preface

By means of Onyx Ceph™, all types of visual diagnosis required in orthodontics can be easilyperformed. Basically, Onyx Ceph™ requires digital images which can be imported from external imagesources or disk. In the relational data base, each finding consists of a digital image and adataset that contains image related data like patient record ID, date of image acquisition, type of image, landmark coordinates, etc. Onyx Ceph™ additionally manages a separate patient card index, that may be synchronizedwith the patient card index of linked third party systems (practice management, digital X-ray...). The concept of the Onyx Ceph™ data base presumes that each patient has an individual(unique, unchanging) patient record ID. This ID is a string with max. 20 characters and it isnot case-sensitive. Blanks and the characters ? * / \ | : " are not allowed.

The system Onyx Ceph™ consists of the autonomous software modules:

OnyxCeph Orthodontic AnalysesOnyxPVL Analyses EditorOnyxPrint Print Module

The modules OnyxCeph and OnyxView can be started by a third party (e.g. practicemanagement) software.

Onyx Ceph™ supports the synchronization of patient card file index entries via

Page 32: Onyx · PDF fileContent I Content Release 1 IPreface 3 IIInstallation 5 1Overview

InterfacesPractice Management 28

© Image Instruments GmbH 2001-2007

communication file. Nevertheless, this interface has to be implemented in the practicemanagement. Data synchronization is only performed when OnyxCeph™ (OnyxView) is started by theexternal software. Onyx modules can be started several times because it is analyzed if thesoftware is already running. In this case the application is displayed in front of the Windowsdesktop and the patient data is updated.

This is the fundamental approach to send patient record data from a management softwareto Onyx Ceph™:

1. Read filepath and filename of the temporary patient-data-file from the Onyx.ini-file 2. Write the temporary patient-data-file with the valid (active) patient data3. Read the filepath of OnyxCeph™ (OnyxView) from the onyx.ini4. Start OnyxCeph™ (OnyxView) together with the patient-ID as first command lineparameter

Optionally, the management software can

· read images from Onyx· open findings directly· write finding results to the patient record· create new finding (if the image already exists)

3.1.1.1.2 Module Calls

Both modules (OnyxCeph™, OnyxView) are completely autonomous Windows applications(9x, Me, NT, 2000, XP) and can be started by CreateProcess() or WinExec(). The modulepath can be read from the file onyx.ini (see topic 4).The temporary patient-data-file has to be generated by the management software before themodule call is sent. The file is immediately deleted by OnyxCeph™ after the call was treated. The module call command line syntax is:

OnyxCeph [PPPPP [BBB]] | PPPPP patient record ID (max. 20 characters) Four types of module calls are supported:

(1) To start Onyx Ceph with the latest finding /photo of the active patient:

Module call: OnyxCeph PPPPP

Onyx will check if the active patient already exists in the internal patient card index. Ifnot, the patient data is read from the temporary patientdatafile (see below) and thepatient record is added. (see topic 4).The latest finding /photo for the active patient is displayed.

(2) To create a new finding for the active patient (only module OnyxCeph) using a newimage:

Module call: OnyxCeph PPPPP -1

Onyx will check if the active patient already exists in the internal patient card index. Ifnot, the patient data is read from the temporary patientdatafile (see below) and thepatient record is added. (see topic 4). A new finding is created and the 'Select Image Type' dialog is opened.

(3) To create a new finding for the active patient using an image that already exists in Onyx:

Module call: OnyxCeph PPPPP –2 (image is copied)OnyxCeph PPPPP –3 (image is deleted)

Page 33: Onyx · PDF fileContent I Content Release 1 IPreface 3 IIInstallation 5 1Overview

InterfacesPractice Management 29

Onyx will check if the active patient already exists in the internal patient card index. Ifnot, the patient data is read from the temporary patient-data-file (see below) and thepatient record is added. (see topic 4). A new finding is created for the image handed over.Filepath and filename of the image file have to be read from the Onyx.ini in capture [Communication] entry PicDat (see topic 4). This entry is deleted immediately afterthe module call is treated.

(4) To start OnyxCeph™ with a special finding of the active patient:

Module call: OnyxCeph PPPPP BBB

Onyx will check if the active patient already exists in the internal patient card index. Ifnot, the patient data is read from the temporary patient-data-file (see below) and thepatient record is added. (see topic 4).The finding BBB for the active patient is displayed.

(5) To start OnyxCeph without patient selection:

Module call: OnyxCeph

Only a patient record which already exist in Onyx can be opened.

Format temporary patient-data-file:The text file is used to send patient data to Onyx. The calling software has to provide thisservice each time a patient should be handed over to OnyxCeph™. Thereafter, Onyx verifiespatient record data resp. creates a new patient record.

There are 5 lines in the file:

12345 //1: patient-ID (max. length 20 characters)19340430 //2: date of birth (ISO date conversion yyyymmdd)M //3: Gender: Male or FemaleExample //4: namePaul //5: first name

Filepath and filename of the temporary patient-data-file are fixed in the onyx.ini in parameter PatDat in section [Communication]. After import is completed, Onyx will delete this file.

Patient data is only handed over to Onyx if the module call is sent with parameter patient-ID.The patient record is only created or opened in Onyx-Ceph if the patient-ID is added to themodule call as command line parameter.

3.1.1.1.3 Results

All calculated finding results and all of the actions carried out during the processing of thefinding are saved as patient-result-file in txt-format. Path and name of this file can be foundas parameter Results in section [Communication] of the onyx.ini-file.New data is merged to the patient-result-file which can comprise data of multiple patientsand findings. Data reading and deleting has to be ensured by the calling software.

The patient-result-file entries are single lines with the following structure of ANSI -characters:

PPPPPPP:TTMMJJJJIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINN

PPPPP PPPPP patient record ID (max. 20) followed by ":" TTMMJJJJ 8 characters for date III...II 0-80 characters for finding information to be handed over to the patient record

in the management software NN: 2 characters for linefeed (0x0D, 0x0A)

3.1.1.1.4 Image Files

The finding images are saved in different image file formats. Actually, image files are savedas BMP, CMP (LEAD), JFIF, JPEG, or TIFF. Image resolution, image size, imageconversion (RGB, palette) are not fixed. The structure of the image file name contains image related information:

Filename: PPPPPABBB.FFF

PPPPP: patient record IDA: image type; X cephalometric X-ray (lateral or frontal) M cast (deciduous, mixed or permanent dentition) F facial photo (lateral or frontal) H hand X-ray O OPT (panoramic view X-ray) U user-defined image

E external imageBBB: finding ID; continuously incremented integer for each patient

For each patient up to 1000 findings can be created.

Example: 1893F004.cmp

patient record ID: 1893image type: facial photofinding ID: 4

Using file filter 1893????.* all image files for patient record ID 1893 in the active folder arereturned. The file onyx.ini must exist in the Windows-directory of the PC, where OnyxCeph™ shouldbe started. Beside other parameters, this text file provides information which is needed forthe data exchange between Onyx and the calling application (e.g. management software). Below heading [Module] the location of each module is stored: OnyxCeph = location of OnyxCeph.exeOnyxView = location of OnyxView.exeOnyxPVL = location of OnyxPVL.exe

If one of these lines is empty or does not exist, the corresponding module is not installed. In section [Communication] the files for the data exchange between Onyx and the callingapplication (e.g. management software) are defined. PatDat = Filepath and filename of the temporary patient-data-fileResultate = Filepath and filename of the temporary result-data-filePicDat = Filepath and filename of the image file to be handed over to Onyx

In section [Database] information on location of patient data base and image data base isfixed. The image data base is specified by two directories:

PicDBSave= Name of the folder where image data should be saved inPicDBSearch= Names of the folders where image data should be searched,

single entries are separated by ";"

By means of the separation in PicDBSave and PicDBSearch it is possible to structure theimage data base.

3.1.1.2 Interface Configuration

In Onyx Ceph™ click on menu item Options|External programs.

In addition to the items that are already available in the menu point "Go to" another fiveitems can be defined by the item Options|External Programs. So easy and quick changingbetween Onyx Ceph™ and further programs or documents is possible. Thereupon, handingover of master data from Onyx Ceph™ to the called program is supported. Configuring suchlinkages is done by the help of the dialog of the option External Programs.

To configure the Onyx Ceph™ PMS interface, use first file card Practice Management. Fill inthe name of the practice management software and activate the 'Item Visible' checkboxwhich creates a link to the application in menu item Go to. (Up to now this item does not have any functions. It must be configured by the help of theactions 1 to 4 first.) The activated functions are processed in the following sequence when the program isstarted:

Onyx Ceph™ supports handing over of the master data of the currently selected patient toexternal programs. The information is handed over as formatted text: Onyx Data (mark for identification as Onyx Ceph™ master data) PatID (patient number)

Name (family name of the patient) First Name (first name of the patient) DOB (birthday, format YYYYMMDD) Gender (M for male, F for female) FindingID (code of the finding currently opened in Onyx Ceph™)

These seven lines are written to the stated file and/or to the Windows clipboard. Thereupon, the content of the file as well as the clipboard are overwritten.

Most programs recognize being already active in the case of starting them twice. They onlybring the active program to the foreground then. Several programs, however, do not realizethat. They allow starting the program twice which unnecessarily wastes resources. In orderto avoid this the name of the main window of a program can be inserted in the relevant fieldof the second section of the dialog. Onyx Ceph™ will look for and activate this window. Owing to the class name being undocumented or unknown in most of the cases OnyxCeph™ supports the search by the help of thebutton. Therefore, please start the program to be activated and click on this button. After thatselect the program on the desktop and position the mouse pointer on the title of the mainwindow for five seconds. Thereupon, the class name is taken over to the edit field. In addition the title of the window can be stated. Onyx Ceph™ will search for a window withthe given name and title. Please note that the title has to correspond exactly. In manyprograms the title changes during object time so that Onyx Ceph™ could not find it.Normally stating the class name should be enough.

By the help of this item a message can be sent to which another program can react. Thisfunction requires cooperation of the external program because the message has to beintercepted and processed by it. Onyx sends: SendMessage (HWND_BROADCAST, RegisterWindowMessage(MessageString), 0, 0); Further information to this subject you find in the Windows API documentation.

This is the most common method to start an external program. In the file field a program oran arbitrary file can be stated. If a program is stated this will be started. If a file is statedOnyx Ceph™ will search for a program associated to the given type of file. If a program isfound the relevant file of this program will be opened.

possible entries in the file field: c:\Windows\Pbrush.exe (starts the Windows drawing program) c:\MyFiles\Memos.doc (opens the file Memos.doc in MS-Word) www.onyx-ceph.de (opens the address in the internet browser) c:\ (opens the directory c:\ in the Windows explorer)

In the parameters field start parameters can be stated which will be handed over when theexternal program is called. In order to insert information about the currently selected patient into these parameters (e.g.

Page 37: Onyx · PDF fileContent I Content Release 1 IPreface 3 IIInstallation 5 1Overview

for patient selection in the external program) the jokers %1 to %6 can be used. Theseplaceholders are replaced by the relevant patient data as soon as the external program iscalled: %1 patient number %2 family name of the patient %3 surname of the patient %4 birthday, format YYYYMMDD %5 gender (m for male, f for female) %6 findingID (code of the finding currently opened in Onyx Ceph™)

e.g.: name: note file: NotePad.exe parameter: "c:\Patients\%1.txt"

By the help of this configuration the file "patient number.txt" in the path c:\Patients\ is openedby the help of the Windows notepad as soon as the item note in the menu point is selected. In this way patient related data can be easily managed.

Hint: There is no need to activate all actions. Usually one action is enough. If more than oneaction is activated they are executed one following the other. If the actions 2 or 3 aresuccessfully executed processing is aborted and the program stated in action 4 will not bestarted.

Practice management In the first tab sheet it can be configured if the results of the analyses are to be handed overto the practice management program. If this field is activated the itemCommunication|Practice management can be selected in the menu of Onyx Ceph™. Thenthe results of the current analysis or of all analyses can be handed over to the patients filecard in the practice management program provided that this program supports suchfunctions. Please contact the manufacturer of your program. Further information to thisfreely approachable interface is available on: http://www.onyx-ceph.de/installation.html
