PATH Foundation: Enhancing the health and vitality of our community
The PATH Foundation is a charitable organization located in Warrenton, Virginia, making community
investments through grants and programs. Formerly known as the Fauquier Health Foundation, the PATH Foundation supports overall community wellness in Fauquier, Rappahannock and northern Culpeper counties. Based on a community health needs assessment, the PATH Foundation determined four areas of focus: access to care; childhood wellness; mental health; and, senior services.
Through grants to local nonprofits and government entities, programs initiated by the PATH Foundation, and participation in community efforts, the foundation strives to make the area more vibrant for everyone. “Having the ability to make a meaningful impact on the overall health of our community is very inspiring for our board and staff. We are energized by the great things already happening and excited for the future,” says Christy Connolly, PATH Foundation President and CEO.
In 2017, the PATH Foundation is slated to invest over $4 million in grants, programs and resources for its service area. Visit them at pathforyou.org to learn more.
Created in November 2013 through a joint venture between Fauquier Health and LifePoint Hospitals, the PATH Foundation’s $200 million in assets positions it to have a significant impact on its service area—Fauquier, Rappahannock and northern Culpeper counties.
WHAT IS A CSA?When you join a CSA, you make a financial commitment to a farm (usually before the growing season begins) and receive a weekly basket of farm products.

Wegmans Food Markets, founded as a produce company more than a
century ago, has stayed true to its roots— a long history of partnering with local farmers to offer customers the freshest, best produce. Through our Near Our Stores program, we bring local, seasonal produce and locally sourced beef, pork, and seafood into our stores.
Our customers want to know where their food comes from, and when possible, they want it to be from the farm down the street, and so do we. It’s part of our commitment to making a difference in every community we serve. We have an established network of partner farms we work with in Virginia, and throughout our markets, but we’re always looking to cultivate new relationships to offer our customers a growing selection of locally and regionally sourced food.
We look for talented farmers who are passionate about what they do and meet a standard set of criteria. Quality, consistency, farm infrastructure and transportation, and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) Certifications, are just a few of the things we look for. We then examine the products the grower can provide us, whether it’s for one or two stores, or the entire company.
Our Near Our Stores program is truly about partnership. Our Wegmans team members stay closely connected with our farm partners throughout the growing season and all year round. They are an extension of our family, and they help make it possible to provide our customers with the best and freshest local produce.
Farmers interested in learning more about working with Wegmans can contact Jason Smith, Virginia produce merchandiser, at [email protected].

The local foods movement may be sweeping the nation, but only 7% of the food eaten by consumers in the Northern Piedmont of Virginia is produced there (Bureau of Labor
Statistics). To begin raising that percentage, the Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission is developing a marketing campaign to promote the region’s locally-grown foods and beverages. One of nine priority projects called for in the Commission’s 2015 Regional Farm and Food Plan, it seeks to address farmers’ requests for marketing assistance and consumer awareness. The initial public awareness campaign will run through 2019 as part of the Commission’s Farmers Market Promotion Program Grant project, awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
This winter, the Commission launched a branding study to develop a local foods brand name and logo for the region with funding from the PATH Foundation. Following stakeholder interviews, a consumer survey and public input sessions, the Region’s Food Policy Council approved a brand name—“Purely
Piedmont.” Feedback indicated that consumers strongly value knowing where their food comes from, with 75% of survey respondents stating it would make them much more likely to buy local food. The chosen name is intended to provide that
knowledge and evoke the fresh and wholesome qualities survey respondents associated with the region’s locally-grown food. We're proud to unveil
the Purely Piedmont logo. The grant project also supports targeted
marketing efforts at the Madison and Culpeper Farmers Markets, further development of the Tween Rivers Agri-artisan Trail, farmer-buyer
events for the Piedmont Environmental Council’s Farmer-Chef Express Program, a regional food expo,
and continued publication of this Buy Fresh Buy Local guide. For additional information on this effort or to learn more
about the Rappahannock-Rapidan Food Policy Council, please contact Michelle Edwards at [email protected] or (540) 829-7450 or visit the Commission’s Food System web page at www.rrregion.org/foodsystem.html.

From the kitchen of Robin Rider of Rider’s Backfield Farm Beef
Chuck Roast with Shallots and Wine
2-4 pound chuck roast
Oil
Kosher Salt
Lemon pepper
5-6 shallots; peeled and coarsely chopped
1 large sweet yellow onion, coarsely chopped
1 large head of garlic; peeled and cloves left whole
2 cups dry white wine
4 Tbsp. butter
Thaw your roast. Pat dry and season with the lemon pepper salt.
In a Dutch oven that has been heated to medium-high heat, add enough oil to brown the roast on both sides well. Get a nice sear on both sides but do not over-cook it.
Take the roast out of the Dutch oven and set aside. Add a bit more oil to the Dutch oven and add the shallots, onion and garlic cloves and brown for about 5 minutes.
In a slow cooker, place half of the onion mixture on the bottom, add the roast, and the rest of the onion mixture on top. Pour the wine around the roast. Set the cooker on low and cook for 8-10 hours. Once fork tender perfect, remove the roast and let rest.
Pour the juice in a sauce pan, and reduce to about 1.5 cups. Using a whisk, stir in the butter one TBS at a time until thickened and all butter incorporated. Do not let it boil.
Slice your meat across the grain. Serve the onion mixture with the roast and pass the Au jus on the side. Enjoy!
P.S. If you do not have a slow cooker, once you have seared the roast, browned the onions, return the roast to Dutch oven, pour the wine all around, put the top on the Dutch oven and roast for 3-3.5 hours at 350 degrees or until fork tender and succulent. Follow rest of instructions.

FARMS
by Jess Palmer
In a red barn garage in the rolling hills of northern Fauquier County, Daniel Liberson of Lindera Farms develops
delicate and flavorful, small-batch vinegars. Created from products wild-foraged and farm-grown, Daniel’s vinegars are the essence of Virginia in a bottle.
The history of Lindera Farms plays a part in the founding of Daniel’s vinegars. The 225-acre property was, in a previous life, a cattle farm and has gone through an extensive restoration project. Starting in 2009, sections of Bolling Branch and its tributaries that run through the property were restored with stream buffer plantings and boulders to strengthen stream banks, and over 6 acres of wetlands or open water have been created or enhanced.
Daniel pushed for edible plants to be part of the restoration project plan. While working as a chef in restaurants in Maryland and southwest Virginia, Daniel became interested in foraging for products to use in food dishes. Lindera Farms is now home to edibles like mulberry, elderflower, wild chamomile, persimmon, and paw-paw. The fruits, flowers
and roots of these plants become the flavor of his vinegars.
Daniel also purchases products from local farms. The mead is made from honey from Golden Angels Apiary in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Every farm he works with is highlighted on his website. “It’s important to me to support farms that practice sustainability and I want to do what I can to see them successful, even if that means I have to compete for product from them,” Daniel says.
To date, he has developed thirty-nine different vinegar flavors, ranging from foraged elderflower, persimmon and ramps to purchased products like shagbark hickory, heirloom pepper and butternut squash. “Each flavor has its own process—a different technique and a unique process,” Daniel explains.
Everything, from the honey mead to the flavor tinctures and syrups, is created by Daniel. “To capture the fresh flavors of the product, I process everything same day—it comes in and I use it—no cold or dry storage.”
You can purchase Lindera Farms vinegars online at www.linderafarms.com.

NEWS FROM PEC
Fenced in at Roundabout Meadows
A significant stewardship project wrapped up last fall at Roundabout
Meadows, the 141- acre property near Gilbert’s Corner that was gifted to PEC in 2013. The project focused on implementing agricultural Best Management Practices (BMPs) that will keep livestock away from the property’s streams and provide a clean source of water for cattle. As part of the effort, over 2 miles of fencing and almost a mile of pipeline plumbing for a watering system have been installed.
The long term goal is to retain the property's agricultural use while also being good stewards of land and water resources. Lou-doun Soil & Water Conservation District has been instrumental in providing technical and funding assistance for the project.
Like many farm properties in the Piedmont, the cattle grazing on the property had free access to
Howser’s Branch and other streams. This situation was contributing to degradation of the property’s stream banks and causing fecal con-tamination of its waters.
In 2014, PEC staff and partici-
pants of our Fellowship Program, conducted a macroinvertebrate monitoring of the streams. Some key findings were the high turbid-ity levels and stream temperatures, which make it hard for most of the
bottom-dwelling insects to survive. That same year PEC staff started monthly sampling for bacteria. This baseline data will provide us information to assess the effective-ness of our project in cleaning up the stream.
“Installation of the fencing on the property is a critical step in addressing the water quality issues we have documented,” says Mike Kane, PEC’s Director of Land Conservation. “Keeping the cattle away from the streams will provide
immediate relief from the daily sediment deposition and fecal contamination caused by the livestock.”
The implementation of BMPs also sets the stage for other practices that can improve agri-cultural productivity and natural resource protection over time. For example, the installation of the fencing and watering troughs can facilitate a rotational grazing system for livestock. This practice can boost productivity by improv-ing soil health and the quality of the forage.
The property will also be used as a demonstration site for landowners interested in imple-menting BMPs.Fencing at Roundabout Meadows. Photo by Marco Sanchez
A Match MadeFarmers seeking Landowners (and vice versa)
In 2016, The Piedmont Environmental Council held a “Farmland Leasing Social Hour”
where Katharine Wilson, a farming intern at the time, met landowners, Holly and Peter Maillet.
“We saw a gap between aspiring farmers and landowners who want their land in agriculture,” says Jess Palmer, our farm and food program coordinator. “So we began hosting a happy-hour style event, where landowners and land seekers can mingle and talk about their property or their business ideas.”
Katharine had been working at Bellair Farm in southern Albemarle County for three seasons. “As great as it was working at Bellair, I was ready for more responsibility. And I was trying to think about the next step, which was definitely not
buying land,” Katharine recalls. “I loved the Virginia central region, and I wanted to stay here. But the high cost of land was prohibiting that as a real option, so I was looking for alternatives.”
After meeting at the social hour event, Katharine continued discussing details about a potential partnership with Holly and Peter.
“We started meeting and getting to know each other, and talking about if we were to partner up. What would this look like? What do we want?,” explains Katharine. “I drafted up a business plan to present, and that was what we started tweaking; and then we finalized things in August.”
Holly and Peter formed Ber-rey Hill Farm, LLC, and Katharine moved onto the property this
past November as the acting farm manager. The farm will provide eco-logically-grown vegetables, herbs and blueberries, along with eggs from pasture raised hens, this year.
“We already have people signed up for our CSA,” says Katha-rine. “That was really important to
us — building community. I think that made us match really well — is how focused on community we are, whether it be from building the local economy here in Madi-son County or feeding the wider central Virginia community with healthy food.”

Canning 101Home canning can be a
wonderful skill to learn, but the top priority is
safety. The first step you can take to ensure you are can-ning food safely is to take a class from your local Virginia Coopera-tive Extension FCS Agent or another entity with canning expertise in your community. The next step is to choose a recipe or process that has been tested and confirmed by professionals to reduce the risk of foodborne illness. The best sources for tested recipes is the National
Center for Home Food Preserva-tion, the “Ball Blue Book” or UGA’s “So Easy to Preserve” publication.
Another fun, affordable and edu-cational option is to use one of the many Canneries in Virginia. There are 15 of these statewide and small or large volume canning can be completed safely and efficiently.
Moving into the realm of selling your product to the public can be daunting, but many resources exist to help you get to the next step. For instance, jams, jellies, and pickles can be produced in your home and

Virginia Canneries
!P Canneries with Inspected Kitchen*
!P Canneries
*Canneries in orange are VDACS inspected kitchens and thus able to make foods for resale
sold direct-to-consumer at farm-ers’ markets or from your own home. Search online for “VDACS Going to Market” publication for simplified regulations. However, to sell canned items through retail stores or the internet, the rules become a bit more complicated and you should consult a spe-cialist before embarking on that journey. One great resource is the non-profit Virginia Food Works whose mission is to assist farmers and food entrepreneurs to make delicious foods while efficiently navigating food regulations. www.VirginiaFoodWorks.org
Another option for creating
foods for resale is to rent a local commercial kitchen. There you can prepare your products using the equipment and space necessary to pass a food business permitting inspection. A new company based in Charlottesville, VA called The Kitchen Network is building an online database of these commercial kitchens where you can search, schedule, and rent commercial kitchens in your area. They also offer food business consulting services to help entrepreneurs navigate the process of starting a food business in Virginia. www.RentalKitchenNetwork.com

The Farm At Sunnyside is located in Washington, Virginia along the border of Shenandoah National Park. Stacey
Carlberg and Casey Gustowarow manage the farm operation and take special care to implement innovative sustainable agricultural practices designed to promote healthy soils. These include use of cover crops, crop rotation, smart/minimal tillage practices, compost making and mulching.
They grow certified organic fruits and vegetables for purchase at farmers' markets and through their community supported agriculture program. Sunnyside's produce includes over 60 kinds of vegetables and herbs, among them a wide variety of heirloom tomatoes, greens and hot peppers. The farm also maintains an organic orchard, growing traditional fruits as well as pawpaws, a species native to Virginia woodlands.
Outside of its cultivated areas, The Farm at Sunnyside manages land for native wildlife
habitat with the goal of maximizing beneficial ecosystem services such as pollination, natural pest control and water quality. Practices include establishing native grass and wildflower meadows, removing problematic invasive species, planting native shrubs and trees (targeting especially riparian zones and hedgerows) and providing artificial nesting boxes for barn owls, kestrels, bluebirds, orchard mason bees and other species.
This work is supported by annual monitoring and survey protocols to measure the effectiveness of actions taken. The farm's owners have placed the entire property in a conservation easement with the Virginia Outdoors Foundation.
In addition to Casey and Stacey, The Farm at Sunnyside is staffed by a dedicated team of year-round and seasonal workers. The farm places a high priority on cultivating a sense of shared mission amongst its staff and in providing an environment where workers can thrive and learn.
