Appendix I: Emerging Invasive Species in the Lower Hudson Valley
The following list is a brief report of emerging invasive species observed and, in most cases, treated by the
LHPRISM partners. These emerging species are ones that were recently introduced but not yet widespread in
the region. Some of the following were included on the 2017 BlockBuster Survey focal list, and their survey
observations will be noted below.
Cytisus scoparius
Scotch broom
Scotch Broom was on 3 properties during the 2018
season, with 12.95 acres managed. The majority
of the known sites are in Harriman and Bear
Mountain State Park with 12.32 acres managed by
the LH PRISM ISF Crew where all 42 reported sites
were visited. The 3rd site is a private property in
Orange County were 0.633 acres was managed by
the LH PRISM ISF Crew.
Corydalis incisa
Incised fumewort
In 2018, the partners of the Lower Hudson PRISM
treated incised fumewort over an area of 1.25
acres. With 0.25 acres by Teatown Lake
Reservation on Teatown lands and 1 acre by
Westchester County Parks at Croton Point Park.
Alnus glutinosa
European Alder
No management reported in 2018.
Actinidia polygama
Silver Vine
During the 2018 season a total of 4.11 acres were
treated within the LH PRISM. The significant site
of activity was in Mt Kisco, NY where, with the
combined efforts of the LH PRISM ISF crew and
NYC DEP, a total of 3.44 acres were treated. The
remaining Silver Vine site was within Sterling State
Forest where 0.67 acres were treated by the LH
PRISM ISF Crew.
Actinidia arguta
Hardy Kiwi
4 sites within the PRISM had treatments performed
for Hardy Kiwi during the 2018 season. Trillium
Invasive Species Management Inc. treated 1.03
acres in Bedford & Esopus, NY. While the PRISM
ISF crew treated 0.14 acres at the Brinton Brook
Sanctuary in Croton, NY and at a private residence
in Salt Point, NY.
Symplocos paniculata
Sapphire-berry
A total of 25.93 acres were managed by the LH
PRISM ISF crew during the 2018 season. With
4.96 acres at Carolins Grove in Pound Ridge, 1.12
acres at Cranberry Lake Preserve, 3.57 acres
within Mianus River Gorge and 16.28 acres at Ruth
Walgreen Franklin & Winifred Fels Sanctuary.
Arthraxon hispidus
Small Carpetgrass
During the 2018 season the LH PRISM ISF Crew
performed control work at two sites within the
PRISM totaling 0.02 acres impacted.
Brachypodium sylvaticum
Slender False Brome
Slender false brome was a new addition to the
emerging species list in 2016 with the discovery of
populations along Wappingers Creek in Dutchess
County. During the 2018 season the LH PRISM
ISF crew performed control over 2.75 acres at two
sites. Additional surveying revealed individual
plants downstream which will be managed during
the 2019 season.
Italian arum Arum italicum
No management efforts were reported in 2018.
Heracleum mantegazzianum Giant Hogweed
During the 2018 season the LH PRISM ISF crew
managed 22 sites for giant hogweed. Out of those 22,
treatment was necessary on 9 sites totaling 0.27 acres.
12 out of the 22 sites are now in the monitoring phase,
with 4 sites having no plants found for the first time, 5
are in the second year of monitoring and 3 are in the
third or fourth year of monitoring. The sites with no
plants found for the last 3 or more years are now
considered eradicated.
Hydrilla verticillata Water Thyme
During the 2018 season, 20.7 acres were managed.
With Scenic Hudson reporting 1.0 acres and NYC
DEP reporting 19.7 acres.
Lespedeza cuneata Chinese Bush-clover
No management reported for the 2018 season.
Phellodendron amurense Amur Corktree
No reported management efforts in 2018.
Amur corktree was a focal species for in 2017
BlockBuster Survey, no observations were reported.
Photinia villosa Oriental Photinia
In 2018 11.25 acres was managed by the LH
PRISM ISF Crew. Work took place at 5 public
natural areas within Westchester County.
Pueraria Montana Kudzu
During the 2018 season 2.70 acres was managed by
Trillium Invasive Species Management, INC. and the
LH PRISM ISF Crew with the assistance of the NYS
DEC.
Salvia glutinosa Sticky Sage
During the 2018 season Trillium Invasive Species
Management, INC. and the LH PRISM ISF Crew
performed control work for sticky sage over 49.62
acres in the Dover, NY area.
Viburnum dilatatum Linden Arrowwood
As a common garden plant Linden arrowwood has
been found escaping across the Lower Hudson
PRISM, particularly in Westchester County. During
the 2018 season 30.33 acres were managed within
the PRISM. With Trillium Invasive Species
Management, INC. reporting 3.5 acres managed and
the LH PRISM ISF Crew reporting 26.83 acres
managed.
Linden arrowwood was a focal species for in 2017
BlockBuster Survey, 2 observations were reported.
Viburnum plicatum Japanese Snowball
During the 2018 season Japanese snowball was
treated by the LH PRISM ISF Crew within Mianus
River Gorge, totaling 0.02 acres.
Viburnum sieboldii Siebold’s Arrowwood
The NYNJTC ISF crew performed treatment at 4
sites for Siebold’s arrowwood totaling 7.12 acres.
Siebold’s arrowwood was a focal species for in
Wisteria spp. Japanese Wisteria Chinese Wisteria
During the 2018 season 15.88 acres of Wisteria
was reported as managed. This includes both
Chinese (W. sinensis) and Japanese Wisteria (W.
floribunda).
