Oona, Charlie Chaplin's grand-daughter, is a chip off the old blockbuster... says Bel TrewTRANSCRIPT
‘Daniel Craig has the most piercing blue eyes – I thought they CGI’d them,’ says actress Oona Chaplin about meeting him on the set of the Bond film, Quantum of Solace.
As Charlie Chaplin’s grandchild, Oona is predictably talented. Not that she knew him – he died nine years before she was born. ‘It’s hard reconciling the idea of this huge icon with the fact that he was my granddad – more than anything I feel like I’m a big fan who just happens to know a little bit of trivia.’
She was born in Spain and brought up all over the globe. At 15 she went to Gordonstoun,

“You can wear knickers on your head and no one cares!”
Oona Chaplin is a chip off the old blockbuster, says Bel Trew
where the other pupils’ ‘tumbles in the hay’ amazed her. ‘I mean, holding hands with your boyfriend in Spain was shocking.’
Home, for now, is London. ‘I love it. You can get away with wearing knickers on your head and no one cares. The air is full of opportunity.’ She’s ‘a bit ov a gran’ (in perfect Winehouse-mockney), but her fave haunts are the Black Gardenia and Bar Salsa: ‘I love properly dirty sleazeball jazz.’
In Quantum of Solace she struts about ‘in ridiculous heels’ as a sultry Bolivian hotel manageress. She had a ball on and off set

(‘There was a lot of partying going on’), but still managed to make time for sightseeing with Bond-girl Olga kurylenko. The locals’ eyes must have been out on stalks.
She’s also besties with Bond girl Gemma Arterton – in fact, most of her friends are fledgling celebs. Chaplin’s made three films and performed in Love’s Labours Lost at the Globe, but doesn’t blow her own trumpet and even says she’s a klutz: ‘I’m not exactly Bond film material.’ We have to disagree, after seeing her in costume – a super-tight pencil dress. Watch out, boys... she’s a view to a thrill.
