Term 3 Week 6 - Wednesday August 19 2020
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week is National Science Week. Congratulations to the 15 students who were selected to attend WRSHS Excellence
in Science Program starting this week. After School Oonoonba SS will celebrate science week later in the term due to
Life Education “Let’s Talk about it” presentations for Years 5 and 6 occurring this week.
Positive Partnership Meetings
Engagement with parents and school communities is a priority for every school. It improves student self-esteem,
attendance, behaviour and achievement; and is a key part of our school’s improvement plan. It relates to one of the
domains that schools are reviewed for when the School Review is conducted. OSS will have a review in 2021. Thank
you to the 267 parents who have made time to discuss with your child and their teacher what they need to be doing to
improve.
To support parents and carers of young people, the department has released the evidence-based Spark their Future
website. This website provides engaging, non-confronting information and support to help parents keep their child
engaged with learning and education pathways.
Articles have been developed through extensive research and in collaboration with subject matter experts, including
guidance officers and behaviour experts, and other agencies, such as the Queensland Family and Child Commission and
the non-state schooling sectors, to develop joint articles featuring education and youth policy leaders.
Articles are targeted at parents of teenagers, when disengagement is most prominent, and upper primary students,
when signs of disengagement begin to emerge.
COVID-19 testing
The latest advice from Queensland Health states that if a member of your household is sick,
you are not required to stay home, unless you have received health advice to do so. Any staff
member or student who is sick should stay home and if they have any COVID-19 symptoms,
no matter how mild, they should get tested.
We will continue to encourage parents to stop, drop and go. We ask that adults not congregate inside the school
grounds or outside. Further information about COVID-19 testing is available on the Queensland Government website.
Oonoonba SS is turning 100 years old this year
Yes Oonoonba SS was first established in 1920. Of course this school is not 100 years old as it was built in 2002.
However, the school’s birthday is 15 November 2020. We are planning activities around the time of our birthday and
you will hear more about it from now on.
One of the important links we have with the old school is our bell. I had the bell relocated from the old site when I was
appointed principal in 2003. One of the parents at that time built the brickworks for it to be secured to. Of course, the
bell is significant for us at this site too as it was rung when we returned to the site after the floods on April 05 2019.
If you have any photos or history about the school please email [email protected] or contact the
office.
Our Vision……‘CONNECTING AND ENGAGING THROUGH LEARNING’
Our Belief………..“Our Students are worth whatever it takes”.
Prep Information Session
We are already preparing for the 2021 year. If you have a child ready for prep in 2021 we are holding our
information Session on next Wednesday from 5.45pm. The information session will start with a virtual tour of the
Prep rooms. This is held in our Resource Centre, followed by the Parent Information Session at 6pm.
Due to our COVID-19 plan and the need for social distancing we will not be able to host any children and all visitors
will need to follow COVID-19 expectations.
Regards
Anne-Marie Day
Principal

Hi again from the Tuckshop, We had yet another busy week in the tuckshop, with Fri-day hitting 120 orders! Karen and I were run off our feet Just a few reminders: Flexischools cut off time for orders is now 8:30am. This means if you wish to order in the morning for same day service, you will need to do so by 8:30am. If you haven’t signed up for flexischools already, be sure to do so as you can also purchase uniforms using this online ordering system. Watch this space as our Father’s Day Stall will go live on Flexischools also in the coming days! If you have some spare time, we are always looking for volunteers in the tuckshop. Without the ongoing help and support from our very few volunteers the operation of our tuckshop just would not be possible. I hope everyone is having a great week! Mel.

News from Music We are back......... Yes choir has started up again on Wednesdays in the Music room. Because of limited space in the room we are limiting numbers at this stage to only 25 students so it is a case of whoever gets to the music room first on Wednesdays will be singing that day. We have seen a lot of Year 3 students remembering to turn up and they are enjoying learning how to sing in a group. We are starting to use some of the repertoire that was kindly donated to us last term. Instrumental students are continuing with their lessons and the majority are remembering to turn up on time with their instruments and music. If your child is having trouble remembering their time, remind them to check the door of the instrumental room as the timetables are up on the window of the door. Keep practicing on a regular basis as "Practice will make you better than what you were before". Until next time. Yours in Music Mrs Gough, Mr Temple and Mrs Jung.
Hands on Wildlife Incursion—Week 5, Term 3 (Year 2)
On Monday Ranger Dan visited Year 2 classes and 2/1M to talk to us about Australian animals. We met Fred the bearded dragon. I learnt he eats fruit and that he is a reptile. We also met Nessy the long neck turtle. I learnt she uses camouflage to protect herself from crocodiles. Then I met Phoenix the olive python. I learnt that olive pythons can grow up to 4 metres long. Next we met Rex the saltwater crocodile. I learnt that salt water crocodiles can grow up to 7 metres long. Finally we met J.T. the squirrel glider. I learnt they can glide 50 to 60 metres apart. by Isabel Harper 2/1M On Monday Ranger Dan visited Year 2 classes and 2/1M to talk to us about Australian animals. We met Fred the bearded dragon. Thank you to Eat Up Australia for supplying ingredients for Emergency Lunches at OSS.
Eat Up was established in 2013 in country Victoria, and now supports over 500 schools across Vic, NSW, Brisbane and Townsville, having delivered to date over 950,000 lunches for children who otherwise miss out. We started supporting Townsville at the start of 2020 and had assistance from volunteer groups such as Ergon Energy, Country Women's Association, Queensland Country Bank, CQU and St Margaret Mary's. We are fortunate to have our Wonder White bread donated by Goodman Fielder and Coles and fundraise for other ingredients and fuel for our vans.
