3GPP2OP-20010727 16OP-20010727-012
Rationale For IPv6 in Mobile Network
• Enough Address– Enormous Growth of Mobile Internet
• IMT-2000, GPRS/WCDMA, UMTS, WAP, etc.• Shortage of IPv4 Numbers (50+%)• Recent request to RIPE of 3.2M IPv4 address just for GPRS core
– Always Connected Mode• Fixed IP address
• Addressing and Mobile Routing– Hierarchical Addressing Architecture – More scalable – Automatic roaming (Mobile IPv6)– Route Optimization
• Network Management – Auto-configuration and plug-n-play– Automatic network address renumbering – Device Control - Smart Homes, Bluetooth
3GPP2OP-20010727 17OP-20010727-012
• End-to-end Security
– built-in IPsec
• QoS
– Flow management(flow label)
• Multicast
– Mobile Multicast (Multiple Destination Options)
Rationale For IPv6 in Mobile Network –Cont.
3GPP2OP-20010727 18OP-20010727-012
IPv6 Advantage
• Extended Address Space - enough address
•Plug and Play
- Address Auto-configuration
- Renumbering
• Enhancements for Quality of Service (QoS)
• Improved Mobile IP support
• IPsec mandated
• Coexistence with IPv4
3GPP2OP-20010727 19OP-20010727-012
IPv4 vs. IPv6
IPv4 IPv6
Address 32bits (4 octet) 128bits (16octet)
Address Space Over 109 (4.2B) Over 1038 (3.40E38 )
Packet Header variable size - time-consuming to handle
fixed size (40 octets) - more efficient
Address Allocation
A, B, C ClassCIDR
CIDR based hierarchy by geographic region
Address Types unicastmulticastBroadcast
unicast– link-local address– site-local address– global address
multicastanycast
QoSDefined(ToS), but not generally used
Flow LabelTraffic Class
Security Limited IPsec built-in
Configuration Manual Configuration Auto-configuration

Current 3GPP2 IPv6 Activities
• TSG-P is currently working to include support for IPv6 into the next release of
P.S002. Scheduled to be published 4Q01.
• All IP AdHoc is working to define how IPv6 should be supported in the first release of All IP specifications
- Hosted two meetings to discuss issues, concerns, and requirement relating to
IPv6
3GPP2OP-20010727 21OP-20010727-012
3GPP2 All IP Architecture Principle
• Current Architecture Principle is : - “ The All IP architecture shall be designed in such way that a
migration from IPv4 to IPv6 is feasible and that IPv4 and IPv6 based All-IP networks may interoperate”
3GPP2OP-20010727 22OP-20010727-012
IPv6 Requirement on 3GPP2 All IP
• Operator realize the need for IPv6 addressing due to limited v4 address availability
• Need to allow for existing IPv4 users on All IP network• Need to allow both IPv4 and IPv6 users access to applications and
services on IPv4 networks(possibly v6 networks)
3GPP2OP-20010727 23OP-20010727-012
IPv6 Impacts
• Operator need to support IPv4 and v6 users on same network• Possible Changes in Architecture
3GPP2OP-20010727 24OP-20010727-012
3GPP2 Concerns with IPv6
• Recent Issues from the March IETF meeting relating to security holes in binding update
• Is mobile IPv6 baked enough to based voice grade service on it• How will v6 networks interact with services on v4 networks.
3GPP2OP-20010727 25OP-20010727-012
Conclusion
128 bit Address
Easy use of MT
