DESCRIPTION

The conference Facing the Future: European Research Infrastructure for Humanities and Social Sciences Berlin, november 2014 http://facingthefuture.gwi-berlin.de/programme/ The conference Facing the Future: European Research Infrastructure for Humanities and Social Sciences, initiated by the Social and Cultural Innovation Strategy Working Group of ESFRI and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and hosted by the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities (ALLEA) and the German Data Forum (RatSWD), invites humanities and social science experts, policy makers, and scientific research infrastructure coordinators to engage in a productive exchange of ideas for a roadmap to strengthen humanities and social sciences alike. The aim of the conference is to identify and discuss relevant topics - e.g. possible ways of getting countries more involved in the current roadmap and the importance of "big data" across different domains - and to highlight opportunities for an excellent research environment as a foundation for innovative research today and in the future.

We proposeBibliodiversity !

As in the ecosystem, diversity is a key for innovation, evolution and adaptability

Combination of biblio + diversity, like in biodiversity.

Page 18: Open access to bibliodiversity - Facing the Future: European Research Infrastructure for Humanities and Social Sciences - ESFRI - Berlin 2014

Diversity for culture, publishing and research

• Diversity of languages(not only English)

• Diversity of disciplines(not only physics)

• Diversity of types of publications(not only articles! Books are also important)

• Diversity of players(not only Oxford)

But we still have work to doThreats to diversity : “Matthew effect”

(Robert King Merton, 1968)

“The winner takes it all”

Tends to produce a domination of monocultures…- Disciplines- Languages- Types of publications- Players

Disciplines & languages

“The world’s most trusted citation index”

“Covering the leading scholarly literature”

Page 25: Open access to bibliodiversity - Facing the Future: European Research Infrastructure for Humanities and Social Sciences - ESFRI - Berlin 2014

In fact, the WOS is an island ignoring the majority of journals

In HSS, only 60 of 1000 French peer-reviewed journals are in WOS !

Only this

But not …

Page 26: Open access to bibliodiversity - Facing the Future: European Research Infrastructure for Humanities and Social Sciences - ESFRI - Berlin 2014

Historia and PositifMagazines you can buy in a newsagent's

But not Annales !The most prestigious

French-language history journal, founded by Lucien Febvre and Marc Bloch

And not Études photographiques

The reference in photographic studies

Who said “Covering the leading scholarly literature” ?

The system is broken

Is it protectionism ?Is it ignorance ?It is violence against diversity

We need serious new metrics

Humanites and social sciences are going digital

They will promote bibliodiversity in open access

« We call for the creation of scalable digital infrastructures responding to real needs. These digital infrastructures will be built iteratively, based upon methods and approaches that prove successful in research communities. »

They call for infrastructures

TACTICAL PROPOSALS

I

Publishing is often forgotten in research infrastructures because we focus on research processesYet, it is the best way to convince our big bosses, just because of PUBLIC USENot only colleagues : usage by journalists, teachers, students and other people, etc. The same public that WikipediaREMEMBER : 35 000 000 visits, 19 000 000 unique visitors(impossible in restricted access)

TACTICAL PROPOSALS

II

• Consider publishing as a node, or the missing link between public demand and the deep research work (rules of evidence)

• Visualization may be considered as a good example of connecting both parts

• Models : – DPLA – Hypotheses

TACTICAL PROPOSALS

III

If people love science (i.e. HSS)Policy makers will provide money for it

How can we help people to like humanities and social sciences ?

By building attractive infrastructures !

Being boringis not a sign of scientific quality !

REMEMBER

BIBLIODIVERSITY

FOR OPEN ACCESS AND (VERY) ATTRACTIVE DISCIPLINES

WITH AT LEAST A CONTINENTAL AMBITION

WITH (VERY) STRONG CONNECTIONS WITH THE RESEARCH COMMUNITIES

WITH (VERY VERY) STRONG INTEREST IN PUBLIC USE
