Myths about Open Access
● open access = low quality
● authors must pay for open access
![Page 12: Open and Public Access](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022060317/62948df5a666e0401318558f/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Myths about Open Access
● open access = low qualityThere is low quality OA and paywalled content. Some OA journals are amongst the most prestigious in their disciplines.
● authors must pay for open access70% of OA journals do not charge a fee
![Page 13: Open and Public Access](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022060317/62948df5a666e0401318558f/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Paths to Open Access
Open Access JournalsPublishers automatically and immediately make the work available and allow anyone with an Internet connection to read it for free.
Open Access RepositoriesAuthor(s) of a work self-archive the work in an open access repository. Repositories are often specific to an institution, a discipline, or a funder.
![Page 14: Open and Public Access](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022060317/62948df5a666e0401318558f/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Benefits to Open Access
● Share research with those who can’t
access it
● Promote collaboration with colleagues
● Increased visibility via search engines
● Increased citation rates
● Advances the pace of scientific progress
● Supports reproducibility (open data)
![Page 15: Open and Public Access](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022060317/62948df5a666e0401318558f/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)

Federal Sponsor Public Access Policies
● Make research results (peer-reviewed articles) publically accessible within 12 months of publication
● Use a repository designated by the sponsor to post research results (i.e. PubMed, institutional repository)

Research Lifecycle ● Writing a data management plan
● Sharing your research products (Contract negotiation)
![Page 47: Open and Public Access](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022060317/62948df5a666e0401318558f/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
Paths to Open Access
Open Access JournalsPublishers automatically and immediately make the work available open access. They may or may not includes a Creative Commons license. They may or may not charge an article processing charge (APC).
Hybrid JournalsArticles in the journal are paywalled by default. An author may pay an APC to make them available open access, typically include a CC license. Journal may allow submission to an open access repository.
Paywalled JournalsArticles are behind a paywall, but the journal may allow submission to an open access repository.
![Page 48: Open and Public Access](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022060317/62948df5a666e0401318558f/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
Openly Sharing Published Research: Key Questions
● Does the funder require a Creative Commons license?
● Does the funder require an open access journal?
● Is deposit in an open access repository permissible? Does the funder permit an embargo?
![Page 49: Open and Public Access](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022060317/62948df5a666e0401318558f/html5/thumbnails/49.jpg)
Openly Sharing Published Research: Key Tips
● Anticipate that a journal may charge an article processing charge (APC). These typically range from $200 - $5,000.
● Know that you can negotiate for additional rights.(e.g. This research is funded by [Name of Funder] and is subject to its public access policy. As such, I need permission to share it via an open access repository within six months of publication.)
![Page 50: Open and Public Access](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022060317/62948df5a666e0401318558f/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
Openly Sharing Published Research: Key Tips
● If the funder requires it and/or the contract permits it, submit your work to an open access repository!
● The funder may designate a repository (e.g. PubMedCentral)
● You might also submit to an institutional repository (More locations = more readers = more citations)
![Page 51: Open and Public Access](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022060317/62948df5a666e0401318558f/html5/thumbnails/51.jpg)
