Our commitment to academic excellence, our focus on business and the professions and our location in the heart of a global city make us distinctive. For example, the last Government assessment of our research quality identified fifteen areas of academic activity where our research is comparable with the very best in the world.

Our courses are popular, we have a close relationship with many professional institutions and businesses, we attract students and staff from around 150 countries and we produce graduates who are in demand by employers: we are ranked 10th in the UK for graduate-level jobs by The Sunday Times 2012.

We hope that our Open Day will provide you with an understanding of what City can do for you and what it would be like to study with us. Welcome to City.

City Open Days are designed to help you get a feel for the University and in particular the course(s) you might be interested in. But life at City won’t just be about your course: the Students’ Union exists to ensure that you have a great time at university, by organising events, supporting clubs, sports and societies and representing the student body.

In order to make the most of your visit, I’d recommend a campus tour where you can see the facilities. You should also try your best to attend all the talks and presentations that interest you. There will be many current students around on the day and all of them will be more than happy to answer your questions. Going to university is one of the biggest decisions you will make, so don’t be afraid to separate from your parents or friends and have a look round for yourself so that you can develop your own perspective.

The Students’ Union will be available all day in Saddlers Bar, our on-campus venue, giving talks on student life, sport, events and activities. They can also answer any questions you might have about being a student here. I hope you have a great day and if you do choose City, I look forward to welcoming you back soon!

FACILITIES FOR PRAYER AND REFLECTIONPlease ask at the Help Desk on the main walkway in the University Building (B) if you need to pray during the day. They will direct you to the appropriate facilities.

HELP DESKIf you want to know anything about what’s happening on the day just visit one of our Help Desks on either the main walkway in the University Building (B) or on the first floor in the College Building (A). We can advise you on how to make the most of your day and point you in the right direction for talks or tours.

Offering 228 single en suite study bedrooms, 6 studio apartments and 3 cluster flats each with 2 bedrooms, all single en suite study bedrooms and studio apartments are fully fitted to a high standard and include shower, toilet and washbasin. All bedrooms have telephone and data points for high-speed internet access. Single study bedrooms share a fully-fitted kitchen and spacious living area. Studio apartments are self-contained with a kitchen and a living/study area. The residence provides 2 purpose-built rooms designed for residents with disabilities. LIBERTY COURTLiberty Court is located in the historic area of Clerkenwell – formerly known as Little Italy. This newly refurbished residence is situated just behind Farringdon station, with Barbican station less than a 5 minute walk away. Clerkenwell is home to one of London’s largest nightclubs and several pre-club bars and restaurants. The central location of this accommodation means it is within walking distance to the financial district, Bloomsbury, Covent Garden and much more.

Liberty Court offers 291 single rooms in a flat share. The flats are a mix of 3, 4 and 5 bed flats sharing bathrooms, kitchen and lounge. Some of the rooms benefit from larger beds. There are 4 self-contained single studios with private bathroom and kitchenette.

EAST CENTRAL HOUSE East Central House is in the Barbican neighbourhood with art galleries, superb night life, cultural centres, parks and London’s oldest Turkish baths all close by. The central location also ensures good transport links from Old Street and Liverpool Street stations.

East Central House is owned by Unite Student Accommodation and offers 100 single en suite rooms in flatshares to City students (the hall also houses students from other universities). Shared flats are a great way of making friends and meeting other students during your first year at University. Each flat has a well-equipped kitchen and the hall offers a common room with flat screen TV and DVD player, an on-site laundry and bicycle storage. A short history of City University London

City’s tradition of providing high quality education relevant to business and the professions dates back 160 years. For many of our graduates, time spent at City laid the groundwork for careers that have changed the world we live in.

1852 The Inns of Court School of Law was founded. One of the earliest providers of legal education in London, it would become a part of The City Law School in 2001.

1876 Herbert Henry Asquith, British Prime Minister from 1908 to 1916, graduated from The Inns of Court School of Law. Asquith was the first of many global leaders including Mohandas ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi, Clement Attlee, Jawaharlal Nehru, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair, to pass through what is now The City Law School.

1877 St Bartholomew’s College of Nursing was founded, affiliated with London’s oldest hospital, St Bartholomew’s. The College of Nursing would later be incorporated into the School of Health Sciences at City University London.

1894The Northampton Institute was founded. With the objective of promoting ‘the industrial skill, general knowledge, health and wellbeing of young men and women belonging to the poorer classes’, the first departments established in the Institute were Mechanical Engineering and Metal Trades, Artistic Crafts for Industry, Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering, Horology, Electro-chemistry and Domestic Economy.

1908 The University Great Hall played host to the boxing competition of the first London Olympic Games. Great Britain excelled in the competition, winning 14 of 15 medals awarded. 1909 The Northampton Institute introduced courses in Aeronautical Engineering, the first offered in the United Kingdom. In this year the Institute also presented its first candidates for University of London BSc degrees.

1914-1918 During the First World War, the engineering facilities of the Northampton Institute were used to produce munitions and telegraph sets and members of academic staff helped to train munitions workers and service personnel. All departments also participated in schemes to retrain and find employment for wounded ex-servicemen. 1927 With the founding of the Department of Optometry and Visual Sciences, the Northampton Institute became one of the first establishments in the world to educate optometrists. City University London remains the only institution in London to offer a BSc in Optometry.

1939-1945 The Northampton Institute once again played a key part in the war effort, providing training courses for members of the RAF, Army and Navy in skills ranging from optics manufacturing to wireless mechanics. The University buildings suffered bomb damage, notably the Great Hall. Post-war reconstruction work would be completed in 1953.

1946 The Institute began a period of expansion that would set the stage for its transition into City University London in 1966. Between 1946 and 1956 the number of courses grew, student numbers increased and academic research became more important.

1955The Northampton Institute offered a summer school on the use of electronic digital computers and calculators in accountancy, costing and management, laying the groundwork for the foundation of the British Computer Society.

1957 The Northampton Institute became the Northampton College of Advanced Technology, with a mandate to increase student numbers and offer advanced degrees whilst retaining the former Institute’s close links with industry. 1963 The Northampton College began to construct its first hall of residence, close to the City of London.

1966 The University was created by Royal Charter. Dr James Tait was appointed as its first Vice-Chancellor and Oliver Thompson its first Pro-Chancellor. Together they approached the Lord Mayor of London and they established a unique association between the City and University that continues today, in which the Lord Mayor in office is also the Chancellor of City University London.

1969 The Drysdale and Centenary Buildings were completed. The University Building would be opened a year later, and the Tait Building in 1974.

1971The astronauts of Apollo 15 visited City University London and presented Vice-Chancellor Tait with a piece of heat shield from the Apollo 15 command module.

1975The first students of City University London’s new degree in Music began their studies. These students benefitted from the close links between the University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

1976 City offered a Diploma in Journalism, capitalising on its proximity to Fleet Street and its long experience of educating for the professions.

1977 The Centre for Legal Studies was established and the Graduate Diploma in Law was offered for the first time.

1988The School of Engineering was formed under the guidance of Professor Ludwig Finkelstein, its first Dean.

1990 The School of Informatics was formed, bringing together the departments of Information Science, Business Computing and Computer Science Undergraduate degrees in Law were offered for the first time.

1995 St Bartholomew’s School of Nursing and Midwifery was incorporated into the University; it would become part of the School of Health Sciences . In the same year, the Charterhouse College of Radiography was also incorporated into the University.

2001 Following a generous donation from the Sir John Cass Foundation towards the Business School’s new building project, the School was renamed the Sir John Cass Business School. The Foundation, one of London’s oldest and largest education charities, continues to support the Cass Business School. Her Majesty the Queen opened the new building two years later. The Inns of Court School of Law was integrated into The City Law School.

2003 The School of Arts was formed, bringing together the departments of Music, Journalism and Publishing and Cultural Policy and Management.

2004 The Social Sciences Building was opened.

2010 City University London was ranked in the top five percent of universities in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and in the top 30 higher education institutions in the UK by the Times Higher Education Table of Tables.
